TRADING ASSISTANT

CAN MARKET CONTEXT IMPROVE SHORT-TERM TRADING DECISIONS?

M1 / M3 / M5  |  VOLUME  |  MARKET STRUCTURE  |  REVERSAL RISK

ANALYZE • EVALUATE • DECIDE

A QUESTION FOR ACTIVE TRADERS

How do you distinguish a genuine short-term reversal from a temporary price pullback?

This is one of the questions we are exploring while developing Trading Assistant, an independent crypto market analysis and decision-support project.

We are investigating whether combining multiple timeframes, price structure, volume, momentum and signs of market exhaustion can help identify better trading opportunities.

Our early experiments have shown that predicting the next one-minute candle is difficult. So far, we have not demonstrated a consistently profitable forecasting model.

TWO APPROACHES WE ARE RESEARCHING

1. TREND CONTINUATION

Identifying potential entries in the direction of an established trend after a temporary pullback.

2. SHORT-TERM COUNTERTREND MOVEMENTS

Recognizing smaller movements against the main trend without confusing an ordinary pullback with a genuine market reversal.

Our main focus is BTCUSDT Futures, using M1 for short-term timing and M3/M5 for additional market context.

WHAT DO YOU THINK?

I'd particularly like to hear your experience:

  • What do you check before entering a LONG or SHORT?
  • How do you identify the end of a pullback?
  • Do you use volume, order flow or liquidity to confirm direction?
  • What helps you avoid false reversals on M1 and M5?

Practical examples, constructive criticism and alternative approaches are welcome.

How do you distinguish a genuine short-term reversal from a temporary price pullback?

Well, for a trader that knows what he or she is doing in the market, we know that the market does not just move in a straight line, however if volatility is high and price printed some momentum candles, it will definitely leave behind some imbalance such as FVG (fair value gaps), inverse fair value gaps, breaker block, you name it. So, to distinguish between pullback and reverse, if price respect those imbalances it created it means it's just a pullback but when price disobeys those imbalances, it's probably signaling reversal.

For example, if price is in an uptrend, you should see higher highs and higher lows, right? For a new higher high (resistance level) to be confirmed, it has to break above the previous higher high or previous resistance level. When that happens, fair value gaps, order block and breaker block is being created, for a quick continuation in the uptrend, price has to respect the previous resistance level it just broke but for a well aligned market structure price has to respect that FVG or order block that lead to the new higher high. If price strongly close below those levels, it means that a change of character or market structure shift has happened and you should wait for confirmation first before entering short position.

So, this is one example of what I'm talking about, in this trade I took on BTCUSD 2 weeks ago, that place I indicated as "MSS" was supposed to be a pullback back into an FVG so that  price will continue the uptrend but that pullback failed to break above the resistance, so it became invalid because price came back with an impulsive move and closed below it which I now consider as a market structure shift (MSS). That already gave me a signal that price is going to be bearish for a short term. I marked out the order block and FVG that caused the MSS, placed my entry inside that order block and my stop lose right above that higher high/resistance. There were other confirmation I looked out for on the M15 before taking the trade.

Now, the point am just trying to make here is that, had it been price closed above that order block, I would know that the up trend is still active but you can see that price respected that level which is a good signal that that was just a pullback and not reversal.

Based on my strategy, to confirm a price reversal, I need to see that a market structure shift has happened, some people call it change of character, which I do too.

M1 which means 1 minute is usually so noisy, so it doesn't make any sense to me when I see some people using that time frame, although everyone have their strategy. M15 works perfectly well for me.

First I need to see that liquidity has been taken and then an engulfing or impulse candle must show up inside my point of interest.

Hammer candle and an engulfing candle is an indication for me, I also use a Fib retracement tool.

Order flow + liquidity.

I don't use M1, however what helps me avoid false reversal is that I usually do my analysis from a higher time frame, the low time frame is just for confirmation before taking my entry.

Thanks for the detailed reply, and especially for sharing an example from your own trading!

Let me briefly explain why I asked.

I'm developing a small tool called Trading Assistant to help traders understand market conditions. We're currently experimenting with identifying short-term BTC reversals using M1, M3, M5 and volume.

One of our biggest challenges is telling the difference between a normal pullback and a genuine change in direction. That's why I'm interested in how traders handle this in practice.

I understand your point about M1 being too noisy. We're also trying to avoid making decisions based on a single one-minute candle.

Can I ask you one simple question?

When you see a possible reversal, what usually gives you the final confidence to enter: a break of an important level, a retest of that level, or a strong candle supported by volume?

I'm interested in what works for you personally.

Thanks again for sharing your experience!

For the tool you're designing, will it be using only these timeframes to analyze and identify pullbacks and reversals?

What gives me the confidence to take a reversal trade is just the exact thing you said, I want to see that a strong level (support or resistance) has been broken, then I will take my trade at the retest of that level. At times, there's how the market will be more volatile and it breaks with a strong momentum candle which is still a strong confirmation that buyers or seller are in control and price has the likelihood of going just in your direction.

Thanks for the detailed explanation!

No, we don't plan to limit Trading Assistant strictly to M1/M3/M5. These timeframes are used for short-term analysis, but we're also considering the broader market context.

Our goal isn't to predict every candle, but to distinguish between a normal pullback, trend continuation, and a potential genuine reversal.

I'm particularly interested in your approach using a breakout followed by a retest of an important level.

One question: if price breaks an important level with a strong momentum candle, but volume is decreasing, would you still consider that a valid confirmation, or would you prefer to wait for a retest?

Honestly M1/M3/M5 feels so unreliable to me, I've been trying using it to identify reversal but you know what, I don't think it really helps me identify reversal and the result is still unclear, 50% chance you get it right or get it wrong, what I'm doing right now is only opening long or short when macro trend supports the decision, if not then i'll skip it. I identify end of a pullback on fair value gap, the good old theory of market imbalance because everybody seems to believe the same thing, I'm just going with the flow.

A QUESTION FOR ACTIVE TRADERS

How do you distinguish a genuine short-term reversal from a temporary price pullback?

This is one of the questions we are exploring while developing Trading Assistant, an independent crypto market analysis and decision-support project.

Our early experiments have shown that predicting the next one-minute candle is difficult. So far, we have not demonstrated a consistently profitable forecasting model.

A whole lot to say actually but I would just hit the nail on the head using my own individual knowledge.

For what you are investigating, I wouldn't discuss price structure because it may also be confusing but focusing on higher multiple time frame is sacrosanct. Volume and momentum too are important to show if buyers or sellers are beginning to leave the market. It is not a wise trading advise to continue trying to harvest when harvesters are already outside planning to replant by waiting and watching or keeping another date for entry on the next day. Surely, exhausted market is a boring market and capable of trapping you or taking your earlier profits.

And, genuine short term reversal may be a function of exhaustion too.

One question: if price breaks an important level with a strong momentum candle, but volume is decreasing, would you still consider that a valid confirmation, or would you prefer to wait for a retest?

Of course to wait and retest is the perfect thing to do in such situation. If the price of bitcoin is going up but the volume is decreasing, it means it is risky to continue shooting up. Although, you may still be lucky to pick some profit but, it is risky to keep going when everyone is packing out. Volume decrease means may mean big buyers are out and maybe small and retail inexperienced buyers are the players. It is better to stay away IMO.

Re: Can M1/M3/M5 and Volume Help Identify Real Reversals?

I won't rely on 1M, 3M or 30M to identify real reversal. However, sometimes reversal maybe take longer time to begin the actual reversal and by such time, you might have hit SL or burnt your account. It is just what it is, a risky adventure (trading).

Thanks for the detailed reply, Gozie51!

I agree with you on many points. There are plenty of false moves on lower timeframes, so relying on M1 alone wouldn't make much sense.

Let me explain a little about what we're doing. MINUTE is an experimental strategy within our Trading Assistant. We're running tests using real market data to understand how to better combine different timeframes, volume, momentum, and other indicators.

Our goal isn't to predict every next candle, but to gradually improve the algorithms so they can better distinguish between trend continuation, a normal pullback, and a possible reversal.

This is still research, and we're not claiming to have found a proven profitable solution.

Your comments about declining volume and waiting for confirmation are very useful for our experiments.

Thanks for sharing your experience!

Thanks for sharing your thoughts, shinratensei_!

I understand your doubts about M1/M3/M5. There's a lot of market noise on these lower timeframes, and distinguishing a genuine reversal from a normal pullback isn't easy.

In Trading Assistant, we also consider the higher-timeframe trend very important. That's why our experimental MINUTE strategy looks beyond one-minute candles and explores timeframe alignment, volume, momentum, and possible signs of reversal.

We're running tests to gradually improve the algorithms and reduce false entries. For now, it's still an experiment, not a proven profitable strategy.

You mentioned pullbacks and Fair Value Gaps. I'm curious: do you use FVG as your main entry point, or more as additional confirmation?

Thanks for sharing your experience!
