How ironic it is. But probably this is a case to case basis, other person might not be tempted to see that kind of money and steal and play. But this person is built differently, he was easily drawn to the money that was there in front of him, millions of dollars.
And where to go? play it in casinos and become addicted. Good that the hands of justice did his part as he was ordered to pay the same amount that he has stolen. And I don't think that's because you have ADHD, you have the right to commit this crimes as what his defense attorney was trying to say.

My question is, can we not address both addiction treatment and criminal accountability simultaneously? Any individual may require treatment but that does not absolve them of responsibility for financial loss incurred by affected company and other parties.
Yes, addiction to gambling should not exonerate an offender of their crime, after all he is not under any drug. He has caused the company a loss that is not their fault but his. He choose to have his fun and satisfy himself with gambling and so should be liable to his action. The word is cunning and stolen. This means it is an intentional act probably for a good intention of returning it if he had won but it is now inconsequential. The court could be right. The act of goodwill should not be to the detriment of another person. So even if he has the intention of doubling what he stole from the company, it doesn't make him a saint.

They say show me your friend and i will tell you who you are, this fellow has worked so long with gamblers that gambling has eventually rubbed on him, is he not aware of dangers of addictive gambling since he works there? Why don’t people learn from others mistake, he has seen the implications of being addicted to gambling yet resorted to gambling with the money he got, so sad, now it has caused him his life.
On the other hand this should make casinos and organizations more careful with who they allow access to their clients information because if such people are not reliable, they could still such information and use to their own advantage, thereby giving such a casino/organization a bad reputation.

i would even suggest that if you are working in such environment, don't gamble at all because you are going to be too exposed that addiction becomes a natural consequence.
This is what some people don't know and it's hunting them badly. That once you find yourself in such an environment in real life, the best thing is to totally abstain from gambling else you will end up becoming victim of addiction since you always have access to it at will. However, this is like a case of someone that is into selling of drugs. Once you a drugs dealer, it is of your best interest or advisable not to ever get involve in consuming it because once that is done, you are doom for live. Sometimes you wouldn't mind smoking everything that was surposed to be on sales and that is how it's with gamble. Moreover, everybody must not gamble, and even if you must then let it be for the right purpose.

~ When gambling stops being about Fun you will be doing you and those around you wrong. Yeah, stealing $1.4 million is wrong and you must be put in jail for that. It doesn't matter one steals for his gambling addiction or, like in the case you described, maybe he meant to win more for his mum's hospital treatment. It's just wrong. Also, his defense argued that prescription ADHD medication contributed to his gambling behavior. Whaaat? That's just pathetic. This guy should stay in prison until he repays $1.5 million.

I don't know if this news is already in this board I have checked and did not see, if there is let me know. In the News a certain former gambling help line director from Florida has been sentenced. Also according to the same news he was sentenced for cunning the gambling company he worked of millions but what has been shocked is that he did this just to use the same stolen funds to gamble. I have seen something like this in my country where a young man whose mum is in the hospital took her ATM card and withdrew money meant for her treatment just to gamble. When gambling stops being about Fun you will be doing you and those around you wrong. This is why some folks shouldn’t get involved in gambling in the first place. Before going into stuff like gambling, study yourself first . Can you tolerate the risks? Do you have good self-control? And is your real motive entertainment or making money? . Like usually say casinos is just a business to the owner . They’re not running charity , that’s why you should mind your approach. Some folks usually complained on how gambling is bad while they are still folks at there that don’t let gambling affect their lives (just do it for fun). Because you can tell me that someone that took the money meant for his mum treatment , is actually gambling for fun . Cause is crazy , to me that’s another gambling addiction to the peak . That’s why the moment you noticed that the urge of gambling regardless your condition is becoming overwhelming , the best thing to do is to stay out of gambling, for your own good .

He was not sentenced, he was sentenced to 10 years in prison for stealing $1.4 million from his former employer to fund his gambling habit. If the years was mentioned or life imprisonment is mentioned, that means he is not sentenced to death. But if the year of sentence is not mentioned or not life improvement, that means he is sentenced to death.

Honestly, when you are working in a casino and you see gamblers winning big amount of money that can tempt you to believe that you can also be as lucky as those few people.
Nah, I wouldn’t go so far as to say that working in gambling related environment makes developing any addiction almost inevitable. I have some friends who worked part time in live support for online casino. I asked them whether such job influenced them to gamble. Most of them replied that while it might have had some influence initially, it’s no longer any issue for them. Someone prone to addiction will likely become addicted regardless of whether or not their work involve gambling. primary reason behind this all together are personal vulnerability, access to gambling, stress, workplace culture and financial control. Just as it is mistake to assume any employee is immune based solely on their job title, it is equally incorrect to label someone as high risk simply because they work in casino and gambling related environment.

This kind of news aggravates the gambling situation among the people, supposedly they help the person from addiction, while he himself steals for the sake of gambling, this is like a self-ignorant person.
Cases like this are many, like people have never seen him play gambling, but behind it all he spent a lot of money including his family, so I think someone who can't resist this temptation they will definitely fall into the wrong thing.
It is not gambling that is wrong, but the way he is with the money itself, the way he steals is an action that cannot be justified.
This only shows that gambling addiction can happen to everyone, knowledgeable or not, experienced or unskilled. And once it happens, you can't control what you're capable of doing because you let your greed control over your mind. But we all know that getting addicted cannot be blamed to gambling alone, people get addicted because they allow it, because they chose to gamble most of their money and time, when they can handle it smartly and wisely without falling on extreme gambling addiction.

Lets not forget that according to the news, his lawyer claimed he was on ADHD medication. If that is true, that could have contributed to such reckless behaviour.
Hmm, his matter of medication shouldn't be dismissed entirely. However, I don't view it as proven cause of this incident. It’s natural that his family and defense team would exploit legal loophole to try and save him. On the other hand prosecutors have stated that he carried out the theft by deliberately bypassing company’s financial control. In my opinion, it is worth investigating whether there was any actual link between medication and his behavior. Medical experts would be better positioned to determine, even if such link existed, then extent of his criminal intent and his level of culpability for the theft. Simply establishing that he was taking medication is not enough to prove causation.

Yes you're very correct and I agree with you. Personally, I've also worked in a gambling shop and had a very different experience. I was actually more frightened of gambling because I use to see people losing money every single day, there are people who still end up using their salary that is meant for other important things, they will use that money to gamble hoping to double the money. The funny part is that those that mostly lose money is more than people that win something reasonable, and even those who won will still lose their winnings again. From that experience I learned that being in the gambling world does not mean that you will automatically become addicted. For me, after seeing the true reality of gambling, I was not tempted to gamble more, but was more careful.

I feel sorry for those guys who are addicted to gambling and are searching within themselves for the strength to overcome it. And then they suddenly see news like this and are amazed at how deceitful and antisocial the world can be. Even the man who led the fight against addiction was himself addicted. And I understand when such a guy would tell everyone that he overcame his vices and set an example of recovery. But here we have a case where he, on the contrary, showed how deep gambling addiction can go. He rose to such a responsible and respected position in his career and then disgraced himself so hopelessly. Life never ceases to amaze you.

this is a good reminder that gambling can go from entertainment to something seriously harmful when people start chasing losses or using money meant for essentials. the part about taking money intended for medical treatment is heartbreaking. there really needs to be more support for people struggling with gambling addiction.

How the hell can someone steal 1.4 million USD from his employer? His lawyer claims that the guy was taking medication to treat his ADHD, which contributed to him developing a gambling addiction. I am no expert in psychological conditions such as ADHD and I don't know what kind of medication can trigger someone's gambling addiction. This is yet another crazy story about gambling addiction. Such stories will never come to an end as long as gambling addiction isn't taken care of.

That's true, we can't dismiss the possibility it could just be one of those defence lawyers normally use to save their clients but I've also seen cases where such claims were proven to be true and the client's sentence was lifted. If he truly feels he is innocent, he should appeal the case in a higher court. But if this nigga is truly guilty of the case, then I personally think the judge was mild with his judgement. He deserves 20 years or more.

Wherever a person works, if he cannot control himself or is greedy for his own gain, then he will destroy. Greedy gamblers have no common sense. They cross their limits due to gambling addiction. There are many tragic cases where gamblers have lost money they needed urgently while gambling.
If a gambler is addicted, he cannot focus on anything that harms his life or family members. He can be a cause of harm to everyone in the family. Gambling can become a cause of addiction from a center of entertainment at any time. Therefore, one should always try to control himself. Just because a gambler can do controlled gambling in the beginning, he will always do good, as long as he gambles, he must have the mentality to gamble responsibly. No matter how good a job a person does, if he cannot control his greed, he will suffer.

I have seen something like this in my country where a young man whose mum is in the hospital took her ATM card and withdrew money meant for her treatment just to gamble.
This was the dangerous phase of gambling because in this phase the people think what there emotions tells them the example you shared is the one there are a lot of examples i read here in which people gamble with the money which there parents give them for education fee the reason behind this is simple like if you ask from those people they will simply say i figure out the market and this one will hit i mean they are trying to recover the loses and in search of loss recovery they loses more . So if some one feels like addiction of gambling happened to them they have to take a break because addiction is injurious for our mental health.

This somehow became common when a person working in area that suppose to help others, use powers and instruments he has to do opposite what he was in charge for. In some countries police instead of fighting the crime are the crime. People should help fighting addiction are addicted themselves. Those who should help people fight alcohol instead are alcohol suppliers. Those people managed to use their position and profession as a way to cheat. I am those who suppose to help to fight gambling addiction know more hints how to avoid being caught by anti addiction program.

This is not the case with this person, are you trying to say that people who works in psychiatric hospitals are also mentally ill people or they will one day become mentally ill? Don't mix things up. He has one good solid job, to help addicted gamblers become free but in return he got tempted one way or the other and he ended up committing a crime to fulfil that desire, I am sure he isn't the only one working there. Why aren't the others arrested like him? He is the only one who compromised, humans are build to compeomise this way, the police have their own bad stories like this, even in the military.
