Bitcoin adoption isn't just about buying and holding anymore. Some financial institutions are exploring ways to let businesses borrow against their BTC instead of selling it.

South Korea's Jeonbuk Bank reportedly launched a Bitcoin-backed corporate lending program on October 12, allowing eligible businesses to use BTC as collateral for loans in Korean won.

MARA Holdings has also used its Bitcoin holdings to secure $600 million in financing, showing how BTC can serve as collateral beyond the crypto lending market.

Sources:

https://cryptorank.io/news/feed/a5bbd-south-koreas-jeonbuk-bank-launches-first-bitcoin-backed-corporate-loans

https://www.coindesk.com/markets/2026/08/11/bitcoin-backed-lending-is-entering-its-institutional-era-two-prime

I think this is a positive development because companies can access capital without immediately selling their BTC. It gives Bitcoin another practical use in finance beyond simply holding it as an investment.

However, borrowing against a volatile asset comes with risks. If BTC's price drops sharply, borrowers may need to add collateral or face liquidation. Interest costs also mean this strategy won't make sense for everyone.

For me, the real question is whether Bitcoin-backed lending can grow sustainably without encouraging excessive leverage.

Do you think this is a good step for Bitcoin adoption, or could it create bigger problems during the next major market downturn?

Yes, it's good news and great adoption by the bank. They can earn good money from this. Speaking of MARA, they pledged 18,750 BTC, which is around 54% of their Bitcoin treasury, and they risked all this (it is still a risk) to buy a gas-fired power plant for their AI and energy infrastructure. So that's a different business model than their mining business.

But they have to pay $57 million a year in interest, regardless of what Bitcoin does next, but they can probably afford this. But can you? Or a retail investor? It depends on your needs, but it's a good option.

You already mentioned MARA, so I can use its example to emphasize something else, too. It shows how stressful this can be. Haha, I know I am spreading bad vibes, but I don't know, I just always compare the cons and pros. We retail investors are obviously not going to make big moves like this, or maybe we can, but MARA reported a $611M net loss (on paper) because of the BTC dip. Those BTC are locked as collateral too, so they are facing margin calls now.

So the answer to your final question is, if you can handle that margin call, then it's a good option for you. Otherwise, it's not.

When they don't know which other means to use and take custody of your holdings, they provide an option that will make you bring it to them.

For individuals, I don't consider Bitcoin collateral loans as something that you should consider, rather than sell your bitcoin, solve your issue and restock when necessary.

For companies, it's something that could be considered, after all, it's investors' money, and they can always strike a favorable deal with the bank more than what will be offered to individuals.

This is a good news to bitcoin adopters because they can now take a loan with their bitcoin without selling it. If you can use you house to take a loan from the bank, there is nothing wrong to use your bitcoin investment also for the same purpose. Provided that you can pay back your loan and claim back your bitcoin.

However, I will prefer not to use my bitcoin investment as a collateral for a loan and I will prefer to use some other asset because if you cannot pay back your loan, you might forfeit your bitcoin and the price of bitcoin increases overtime. Banks are looking for every means to enable people get more loans for them so that, they can make more profit which is the reason, they have started considering bitcoin because they know that the rate of bitcoin adoption is increasing and the value increases overtime. Not your keys...not your cornz.

BTC-backed loans is not new, neither do i see how it could cause problems, for whom exactly?

Personally, i wouldn't borrow against my BTC, i wouldn't want to lose custody of my coins, plus the volatility risks. If i ever need a loan, i would take one in the traditional way.
When they don't know which other means to use and take custody of your holdings, they provide an option that will make you bring it to them.
Jeonbuk bank would not hold these collaterals themselves. They are going to hand them over to a third party custodial service. I believe that's another reason i would recommend that businsses should hold on to their BTC and seek other means of funding.

Banks have been making risky bets on risky assets since banks began. A professional bank will just take the risk into account. They could give you a loan with the winnings from a sports bet as collateral too, if they correctly accounted for the (very very high) risk.

It's just a matter of adjusting the interest rate (which I suspect for BTC-backed loans is probably insanely high).

You could accomplish the same thing on Polymarket using Bitcoin futures.

I think we've discussed similar topic on board recently. Well, while it's a welcome development, you need to understand that borrowing against Bitcoin isn't a way to totally save you from the need to sell, it might just postpone it. When you borrow and manage your loan well, you get the opportunity of accessing capital without selling your BTC. However, if the market crashes and you fail to meet the collateral requirements, you'll likely be forced to sell at the worst time.

So instead being overly happy about the news, try and know how responsibly these loans are structured.

Yes its volatility is just the main reason why bitcoin will not be suitable asset for collateral, but if the lender is willing to agree on a term that if bitcoin price drops within the duration of the loan it will not be required that the borrower will topup the bitcoin paid as collateral then it will be  a welcome idea for me.

It’s a good step for bitcoin adoption, but it can also become a bigger problem if agreements are not clear enough on when there is a downturn or a major drop.

Personally I’ll not like to use bitcoin as a collateral even if that’s the only asset I’ve got.

More adoption of bitcoin means more progress of bitcoin. There will certainly be downturn, but what that is very important is the progress to surpass the downturn in a way bitcoin will be a store of value. There is no way that bitcoin used more as collateral (or as more institutions are supporting it as collateral) will affect bitcoin adoption.

Personally I’ll not like to use bitcoin as a collateral even if that’s the only asset I’ve got.
That is why the terms for the loan will be clearly stated and the borrower will ensure that he/she understands the terms of the loan clearly before seeking to use his/her bitcoins as collateral. The mistake some borrowers make is that they get excited when they see someone willing to give them money to solve their immediate problems, then pay little attention to the risks involved.

If I have other assets, I will not consider using my bitcoins as collateral. It is good that banks now consider bitcoin as an asset fit to be used as collateral, thereby giving bitcoiners an option to either take a loan or sell, especially when they have plans of hodling for long term.  But then, the conditions for the loan must be well understood because that is where the main problem lies.

Well if a business entity doesnt have much liquid but got  lot of bitcoin, whether its volatile or not they can borrow with a lower finance amount with huge collateral value surpassing that to protect volatility. Its not wise but it can be viable for businessman to have sufficient buessiness operation fund but dont want to sell or liquidate their holdings.

The question of sustainability is subjective and should be based on different factors. This is too early to concludes on bitcoin backed lending approach especially its crypto related.

When they don't know which other means to use and take custody of your holdings, they provide an option that will make you bring it to them.
Precisely and they will look for a company like MARA Holdings that will be used as an example to make individuals believe that using their bitcoin as collateral for a loan is the best decision they can take instead of selling it. While privacy is not really much of a concern for a company that is using bitcoin, it's not same for an individual who really wants to keep their identity unknown to the government and other third parties. I share same opinion with you about individual not using their bitcoin as collateral for bank loans, however everyone have their decision to make but I think this would be more beneficial to institutions/companies than a common individual.

Not Your Keys, Not Your Bitcoin

It is a good development, but I won't welcome it to use for single users. This is a medium for everyone to bring their holdings into the custody of the government, whereby, taking it back becomes a challenge. Just as native banks operates, depositing large sum of your money into your account is not a problem, but taking it out is where the long term process will commence.

When it comes to loan, and you want to use Bitcoin as a collateral, I think the best action is to sell your Bitcoins, fix your problem and restock your holdings, this keeps you safer and keeps you in control, not bringing in a third party, not to say the government.

I'm having this curiosity over the interest on this Bitcoin as collateral. Anyone that must have taken study how defi lending work or that have borrowed money knows what is at stake if you use Bitcoin as collateral. You are just going to walk inside the bank and give them Bitcoin as collateral. What about the price? Bitcoin is volatile, if anything goes wrong with the price, I don't think the bank are going to sit around and watch the price go beyond what was lend to you.

When I see this kind of headlines, I knew we are in bull run, not only banks want this kind of things, other institutions does it but seeing that Bitcoin has not coross another all time high, this bank might really mean a business, that is if they have the intention to do it on the long run. You may wake up tomorrow and hear that they are no longer interested in this offer anymore.

Since banks are now starting to give loans using Bitcoin as collateral we can understand how much Bitcoin is being adopted around the world. Normally we could take loans by keeping Bitcoin as collateral through lending sites so the loan thing is not big news. But the interesting thing is that banks are giving loans by taking Bitcoin as collateral.

Through normal onchain lending and borrowing platforms we can take a loan worth up to 70% of the collateral. The question is how much loan traditional banks will give us.

The interesting part is banks cannot just sell the Bitcoin whenever they want they will need court permission.
Quote
Under South Korea’s revised Civil Execution Rules, which took effect on October 1, 2026, the bank must obtain a court order to sell the collateral through a public auction and recover the outstanding debt.

This is a very good news to Bitcoin investors, because now instead of selling your bitcoin when you are in need of immediate fiat, you can now walk into the bank, use it as collateral, and have the money you need for whatever reason or project. But my only issue now is if only this bank won't try to seek for a higher percentage profits after leaving the Bitcoin with the bank for like 5yrs period, and during that time Bitcoin have skyrocted very high in value.
Like for Example; you deposited  0.01BTC as collateral for $700 in 5 years, and the current value of 0.01BTC is $825 as of today 20th October 2026. And maybe after 5yrs, which is in 2031 the price of Bitcoin skyrocted, and that same 0.01BTC is now worth $1700, while the amount you took from the bank as collateral was $700. So will the bank still allow to pay the $1000 plus charges, or will they seek an extra revenue since the price value of bitcoin has increased?

Well, bro, this can't be the real adoption of Bitcoin because they just gave people a way to hand their coins over to them and then not own them because now they own your coins unless you pay the interest on time. Adoption is when banks believe in it. I can be wrong, yep, but they don't believe in it. They are just after customers' money haha.

Also, it's irrelevant, but the same offers have been made by other projects too, like Celsius, BlockFi, etc., and you can see where they are now, although it's irrelevant because now we are talking about banks, and banks have money. But we were earning from those platforms, while here we are giving them our money and they are earning from it, so they are not going anywhere. Instead, they are giving us money from other people's deposits and earning on that while providing this service. Typical banking behavior haha.

But yep, you can say it's development.

Based on the news reports about this, I see it as a positive step, and I don’t think this is just another way to seize control of the Bitcoin held by people who have pledged it as collateral for loans.
There has already been a growing number of people who welcome this positively because they believe that, rather than being forced to sell their Bitcoin, its value will likely increase in the future. With this concept in place, they can get their Bitcoin back and pay off everything they’ve borrowed from the bank.
I think this positive perspective isn’t just beneficial for the company—it’s also good for individuals.

I imagine giving a bank your bitcoin as collateral, saying in the MOU that this is my 60% of bitcoin holdings and then boom the world knows how much bitcoin hold and exactly is an opportunity for people to consider you a target in this world filled with attackers and everyday it keeps happening. So even for me i don't consider this an opportunity for the everyday man which they seem to be providing solution for but rather another trap to gather the rest of the bitcoin which they couldn't succeed in gathering.

I also see an opportunity for them to be trading your bitcoins as invest by giving a portion out as loan to people too and getting profit from it. its a two way profit mechanism for the banks but no profit for you.

When they don't know which other means to use and take custody of your holdings, they provide an option that will make you bring it to them.

For individuals, I don't consider Bitcoin collateral loans as something that you should consider, rather than sell your bitcoin, solve your issue and restock when necessary.

And who controls the media? who owns the media, so they can make whatever news they want to convince you that its a positive move.
