I came across the story of Terra industries, a company founded by two Nigerians building drones and other security technology and honestly it’s good to see Nigerians trying to build things that can attract serious attention like this beyond the country.

We talk about unemployment and how difficult it is to start a business here, so stories like this make me wonder what could happen if more young people had the right support to turn their ideas into real products. We usually talk about what Nigeria imports and what the government should provide but how much of attention do we even give people or businesses trying to manufacture things locally?

What do we need as a country to help home grown companies grow and compete internationally?

The government need to play a huge role in make it possible. Grants and loan can be given to people, organize annual competitions for tech innovations, reduce the tax of tech producers, or make it tax free. Other areas can be taxed but the production can be tax free and they should not introduce any tax. This will encourage people and many foreign investors. Government should also sponsor researchers.

The only thing you have to do is vote for Peter Obi to become the president of Nigeria. He is the only man I see right now that can turnaround the fortunes of this country. If we have an industry oriented government, they will provide an enabling environment for the people with tech skills to thrive. Many people have one or two to offer this country, but they are not having the right support or the enabling environment to showcase what they have, that could become a good export opportunity for the country. The government controls everything and till we get the right leadership, we won’t break lose form the shackles we are in.
