BlackRock filed Monday for an “iShares Bitcoin Managed Protect ETF”. Basically IBIT exposure with upside capped at some limit and some downside protection in return. Haven’t seen the actual cap or protection numbers yet.

Timing isn’t a coincidence imo. According to CoinDesk, Calamos’ protected BTC fund (CBOO) was down only around 1% over its one-year period starting October 2025, while BTC dropped more than 50% from the ~$126k ATH. Calamos keeps most of it in Treasuries and buys bitcoin options with the rest so you’re paying for that protection with your upside.

Kinda funny how everyone wants insurance right after the house burned down. Buying one of these near the top looks genius now, but in a year where BTC doubles you’d be pretty annoyed watching it from behind a cap.

I doubt this is for people here who just hold spot. Feels more like something for advisors with clients who won’t sit through another -50%.

Would you actually give up upside for this and what cap would make it worth it for you? Also, new money coming in, or just IBIT holders moving over?

Anything that has to do with ETF investment and the protection they may try to introduce will not always work in favor of the investors if with that the conditions that might be attached, so where are we not taking our time to solely consider for bitcoin when we know that this financial institutions are also investing in Bitcoin.

All these are just strategies to me and I don't think they are worth considering, the are protecting nothing when we can be the protector to invest in Bitcoin and hold our asset than ensuring it what party assets.

Yeah if you hold your own keys this isn’t really for you, same for me. You give up a big part of the upside and you don’t even own any BTC, just a fund holding options on another fund lol.

Not sure “protecting nothing” is fair though, CBOO was down like 1% while BTC halved so it did its job. Question is just whether that’s worth missing half the next pump and for spot holders I’d say probably not

This is into the realm of financial institutions and their investors / clients, those people who pay
others to 'advise' them on their wealth and who wouldnt dream of actually owning Bitcoin outright.

Its generally not something for the average Bitcoiner who has already been through the ups and
downs of the Bitcoin market in the past and have a long term outlook which negates the day to day
and general market movements.

This could very well lead to new money / investment for the financial institutions.

If blackrock filed for downside protected ETF, there must be demand. I suppose the demand is coming from people who want to capture bullrun but don't expect massive profit.

But it doesn't make sense to me, why even bother buying downside protected ETF if you're going to cap the upside for downside protection, might as well buy index with less volatility because I think Bitcoin's edge is coming from the parabolic upside.

At the very least it's just another alternative that we can buy.

I'll sit through it all holding for longer, I wouldn't trade better profits from the top for any protection from the downside, the truth is that these conditions works in the advantage of the institution on the long-term. You need patience to benefit very well from your bitcoin investment. I would always like to be in control of my keys and preserve my bitcoin myself, the protection I want is from government and institutional censoring. Bitcoin volatility is a feature and not something that needs protection. This isn't for me at all, I choose self-custody

I think the opposite. They want bulll run but want to limit amount they want to loss. The more I look at this model, it makes no sense. Why would anyone want this in the first place. If Bitcoin do 10x from here, you are getting less than half of that return.

What's there to protect with this ETF, not like Bitcoin will be going to zero, not like an investment will die. This has never happened before, I see no need for this, but since it's a company, it's understandable. They do what they do most to milk dumb investors.

At the very least it's just another alternative that we can buy.

The other day when Ledger was hacked, I came across an influencer that was celebrating how he sold his Bitcoin and discarded his ledger to buy Bitcoin ETF. He made a good move to discard the hardware, was never a good option, but buying an ETF is useless step. I'm not sure how some of them were this convinced to take this poor steps but I'm sure ETF companies are going to eat good. This wasn't what we expected when ETF started, it's what's it's.

For someone that already understands bitcoin and has deep knowledge about it, this doesn’t really make much sense. Protection from drawdowns while trading off a significant upside is not making much of a sense to someone that has gone through bitcoin volatility throughout the years. I only see new investors that want some bitcoin exposure while having strict limits on how much they can afford to lose considering this type of investment, such structured ETF can make such exposure acceptable to them even with capped gains, still for me it doesn’t make much sense.
Generally it can serve as an entry point for risk sensitive investors. Since the actual cap and protection figures are yet to be disclosed we can’t really judge how worthwhile the trade off actually is.

As of now that Bitcoin is in red, there will people that will buy into that protection. It all depends on the amount. I have a billion dollars and I have such protection, the lost won't affect me and the gain also is still huge enough. Just that when it starts making money, the company gets to keep the higher share. That's not even bad as the company secured a larger portion of loss when the market was in a downtrend.

This is for very wealthy people or people that wants to invest an amount of money and won't need it at the moment. Normally, investment money supposed to be money not meant for urgent needs. But some people just like the thrill.
