I believe that banning online gambling doesn’t mean that people must stop gambling. Most people will definitely find another way to gamble, most  especially when they can access unregulated casino that doesn’t have a proper license or follow the gambling laws in their country. The problem is that when people are gambling in unregulated casino, it may become difficult to get help if the platform refuses to pay winnings, disappear with their money or close someone account without adequate explanation.

Unlike regulated platforms, some of these casinos don’t have any strong authority that players can report their complaints too.  But on the other hand I understand why some government restricts online gambling, especially because of  underage gambling, gambling addiction, and the financial problems of some families.

My question is this. Rather than banning online gambling totally, would it be better for government to regulate it properly, protect players and punish casinos that failed to follow the rules? Or do you guys think the best thing is to ban gambling totally to protect citizens from harm?

But if not because of religion, I do not see a good reason gambling should be illegalized just like what happened in Brazil recently. So fast gambling is known to people in such country, they will go for unregulated gambling if gambling sites are banned.

Still depends on the government itself. If they are really that strict and tough on banning crypto and they are going to implement it by hook or by crook, then maybe it can really protect it's people and lessen the gamblers themselves.

But if they are not harsh on the implementation, there will be still be gamblers that might be willing to take the risk and play on unregulated casinos. For me it is still up to the government and then punish those who will be caught as a big example to the gambling community of that country. It happen to us before, when the last sitting President implemented everything, like the police involving themselves, illegal gambling lessens.

It is not the casinos that provides authorities that will handle gambling challenges that customers may face but rather every jurisdiction that cares for customer protection have authority that usually handles issues with customers to operators, have you not heard about casinos being sued?

Restricting online gambling is not a solution to prevent gambling addiction or financial problems, not when land based or physical casinos are still in operation in that country. However, even if there's ban in all types of gambling activities, gamblers will still find their way around the ban.

Every jurisdiction have different approach that their government is using to protect players and prevent problem gambling and also prevent underage gambling. Banning gambling is not actually a solution that will solve the problem because stubborn players will still focus in using offshore casinos and the government gains nothing.

do you guys think the best thing is to ban gambling totally to protect citizens from harm?

In reality I think completely banning gambling and online betting is nothing more than any pipe dream. This is akin to declaring ban merely on paper.

Humanity's innate instinct and craving for adventure cannot simply be erased by any few stroke of  pen or some impulsive piece of legislation. Any country's government could shut down all online platform either with heavy hand or in blind, indiscriminate manner. But that is precisely when ordinary people and gambler immediately flock to those disguised and foreign based dark and black market casino. And this is where actual trouble begin, they are not protecting citizens, they are forcing them to choose bigger risky option.

Gambling was created majorly for entertainment purposes, but where it becomes a problem is when addiction gets into the picture. This is a personal problem for most people and does not validate the need to ban online casinos, because it has other purposes it satisfies as well.

Take for instance, another example where drugs used for medicinal purposes are misused to feel high, would that drug be banned because people are misusing it? People would always find other ways to derive entertainment even after banning online casinos, it could be this or the other.

This shows how scary religion can really be, imagine been scared of gambling because you are in a Muslim country, they can behead you for it, but you aren't even scared if it's from the government battling gambling.

If you aren't in a Muslim country there is nothing that can stop you from gambling if you can do it the right way and keep your very own mouth shut about it, just because the government bans gambling doesn't mean people won't continue to gamble.

People are desperate, gamblers who already love engaging in gambling will see the need to find another way, even if the next option is going to expose them to more greater risk.

Banning gambling is like trying to block people from moving from one place to another when they literally have legs to move. Crypto are there for cross border payments, even if the country banned it, there are casino that accept payment without verification. People are going to find one way or another to use VPN and since they don't require verification, the casino will welcome them with open arm.

I think the government don't care about gambling. When you see the government banned something, they literally don't make tax from it and instead of regulating it for the people, they will rather let it go than constitute headache for them. Countries that tax gambling don't banned gambling, they just regulate it so that they can be making money from it.

Banning of online gambling does not solve any of the problems, instead it does two things which are: make government lose revenue thet would have gotten from them if they were regulated and push their people to unregulated and sometimes scam platforms. I have never supported banning of online gambling because I'm a strong believer of freedom, so people should be free to chose how to do their business and live their lives. If government put efforts at regulating gambling in general, it will benefit everybody instead of banning gamnling completely.

The truth of the matter is banning gambling won't completely stop people gambling through other means. IMO, instead of imposing a complete ban, it's best for the government fine other aways to regulate gambling and introduce restrictions to help control gambling addiction.

The Australia government has taken an interesting step  banning licensed bookmakers from using celebrities in their advertisement, which I believe is the best way to address the situation. Although, the government considered banning gambling completely in country, but some people argued against the Idea, so they came up with this alternative instead.

Some countries prohibit gambling due to other considerations such as protecting against disputes involving many parties, especially countries where one religion is very dominant and legally forbids gambling.
The government certainly knows how much potential revenue it can generate from managing the gambling business. However, there are other risks that also need to be considered to avoid being triggered.
But for countries that from the beginning do not prohibit gambling, managing it well is the best solution. There are also some of them who only want to collect taxes but provide nothing to gamblers. Everything will depend on the seriousness of the government.

Regulation is an aspect, the bigger solution is to do proper sensitization such that people understand the reason why government seams to be against gambling and don't see it as an attack but that it is rather that the government and these regulatory bodies are just trying to protect them from becoming addicted to gambling.

It is just like some services that are not permitted to be embarked on by some citizens of some nationality, even with such restriction, people still access those site with the use of vpn and still do what they want to do. banning some selected only gambling platform only opens door for other ones that offers same services but that are not too known to become the next available option.

Yes and that includes travelling to countries where gambling is legal and use regulated casinos there, not everyone patronizes unregulated casinos.

This is true, but in some countries like phillipines and even mine Nigeria, there's no diference because the authorities are not ready to gudge the matter fairly, they always stick with those enriching their pockets.

Quote
I understand why some government restricts online gambling, especially because of  underage gambling, gambling addiction, and the financial problems of some families.
Restricting doesn't stop underage gambling, teenagers are now smarter and always find their ways around it including involving irresponsible adults to pass verification for them. The only way to stop it is if their guardians are more responsible towards their wards.

I always stand with regulating gambling rather than restricting it, but some religions prohibit it like Islam, so there's actually no way every country would legalize it, although citizens of countries that ban gambling are off-shore casinos biggest clients.

This is why no matter what their is no need to settle for illegal or unregulated casinos because even if they decide to go with your winning their is nothing that can be done, you cant lsy complains or even to sue the casino. If gambling sites are banned and their is no way to get access to a legal casino if you decide to gamble with gambling site that are illegal you should know you are taking a risk and if anything happens you just accept the consequences and this is why people should go for a reliable casino.

I’ll answer because here in Brazil we’re going through a situation where this issue applies:

-> Casinos were regulated and licensed by the government, and they were even paying high license fees and taxes
-> The government decided to ban ALL casinos at once, so there are practically no regulated casinos here anymore, at least for now

People are still gambling, and if their preferred site is blocked, they’re using VPNs
But even so, some people who don’t know about VPNs, or don’t want to go through the trouble, end up stopping gambling

So, given the situation here, I'd say it will deter a good number of people from betting, but others will find ways to bet wherever they can

They can't stop it by just banning only, because gamblers will just find ways to gamble.

But if the government will became more stricter and heavily penalize those people decide to gamble. Maybe this can make people decide to stop playing with online casinos.

I think regulation depends on the belief of government and people in certain countries. Since if the government decide to do it, due to religion matters. Then I many people will eventually follow and will not try to commit sin.

If what they do is for protection then good, since if they do it for monopoly reasons. Then citizens won't probably get anything good with action done by their government.

In general it will protect people but it does not guarantee that it will totally stop them from gambling. For example you have 5 million gamblers on record once you ban gambling, maybe 10% of them will not quit and will just find a way to gamble in illegal casinos. But it does not necessarily mean they are illegal everywhere, they could just be offshore casinos and crypto gambling could be one way to access them. So I believe in that case, the decision of the government is still correct, a ban should only happen when gambling addiction has reached an alarming level.

Gambling is not a man creation but it is an inborn action that comes with the day of man or human existence. And gambling is not only the online betting or casinos. But gambling came as an argument to win one another so if online gambling stopped today has nothing to do with gambling because gambling is one of the act or argument that will not die and can't be stop. Even those leaders who are against gambling activities are the real gamblers.

No human is without gambling. Either directly or indirectly.

Or do you guys think the best thing is to ban gambling totally to protect citizens from harm?

I gamblers is forced to turn to any offshore casino. Those whose activity are not governed by any regulatory body or effective legal framework. Suppose that casino suddenly blocked him, taking his money with it. From whom then will he get justice?

Who will take on that responsibility? Absence of license means that 100% opportunity for fraud is left wide open. At that stage scam casino might block your account to avoid paying out your winning. And they may also keep giving you runaround with various excuse, eventually leaving you in situation where there is simply no way for you to recover what you are owed. So, if any govt truly wishes to act with sincere intention regarding protection of its people. Then instead of taking action later it can ensure robust regulatory framework from very beginning. Prevention is more important than cure.

My question is this. Rather than banning online gambling totally, would it be better for government to regulate it properly, protect players and punish casinos that failed to follow the rules? Or do you guys think the best thing is to ban gambling totally to protect citizens from harm?
If anyone chooses to gamble on an illegal casino, they should be prepared to face any consequences that may arise. We already have so many issues with regulated and licensed casinos, so imagine how much worse things could be with an unlicensed casino. You have no proper authority to report your complaints to, and since the casino is not registered, it can easily get away with its actions.

Most government bans on casinos are based on how gambling is affecting society. Many people are no longer gambling responsibly, and this does not only affect them personally but can also affect the country in different ways. If we have more gambling addicts than responsible citizens, it will eventually lead to serious problems.
