Use the Search bar function before creating new threads

 my people I say make I bring watin I noticed for the forum since joining the forum. I believe say it will help us on the forum and no disrespect to anyone because, often times we see repeated threads on the same topic discussing thesame thing which some times will make the moderator to lock the thread. the reason for this is that many people especially those new to the forum don't take their time and check if what they are writing about to post has already been discussed by another member.

It is expected that before creating new threads we should take time to use the search bar which is at the upper side of the screen. This will help sanitize the forum and reduce unnecessary Dupplication of post which often comes up.

why is using the search bar important

  It Helps Prevent Repeated Topics.

Duplicate threads will be prevented if forum members take their time to use the search bar ,  which will bring out related threads out.This will make the member that wants to create a new thread to know that, someone else has already discussed it. This will help in preventing unnecessary duplicate threads which often comes up on the forum especially on this our local board.

  It Saves Time And Effort.

Proper use of the Search bar will help reducing waste of time and energy from forum members. Which forum members will use their time and energy in doing research, reading, writing and even sourcing for materials just to creating a thread which has already been discussed by another member and it been locked by moderator subsequently.

  It Encourages Meaningful Discussions

I believe that a good use of the Search bar will help the forum in meaningful discussion. When members contributes under an existing threads, instead of creating a duplicate threads it encourages knowledge and brings about fresh perspective to a already existing threads.

Improve Quality of the forum

I believe that the quality of the forum will be protected and even help moderators on various boards to do a lesser job of trying to sanitize the board, by locking or deleting threads that are not necessarily again as it has already been created by other forum members. If only forum members use the Search bar before creating new thread.

  It shows respect for the community.

I believe that taking a little bit of your time and using the search bar to check before creating a new thread, goes a long way in showing that you have respect for the forum. Because this means that you value the effort of others who has taken time to creating threads.

Tips on how to use the Search bar function on the forum

Identify the main keywords related to your intended Thread.
Always Check keywords using the forum's search function.
Always read previous threads which are existing. To understand what has already been discussed or not.
If an existing thread covers your topic, then try to contribute to the thread by way of comment instead of creating a duplicate thread.

I remember sometimes, back when I was on the general English board, when we used to hammer it into newbies to always make use of the search engine before creating a thread to know if it has been discussed already or not. This really helps a lot because it helps us avoid having repeated topics that have been discussed;d, it also prevents spamming and is more important that we search before creating a topic. Another thing is to be able to properly know how we could search the forum, which I definitely appreciate your explanation o of the process to effectively search.

Actually the forum's built in search feature is not that advanced and you can't search repeatedly either. The best tools for searching are bitlist.co/search and Talksearch.io. These two tools were created by reputable members of the forum and they offer very advanced search feature with no limits and are easy to use.

Something to add in using search bar, you may get confused if you don't know how to use it well.

Every board has it's own search function, you cannot mix up topics that doesn't belong to a certain board. For example, you cannot come over to Naija local board and search for campaigns(active or ended). You have to go to service board, and then make your search and you get it.

If you want to search for username, you click profile and then make use of the search button.

The same thing in Naija board, you on search for topics written before in the Naija section, topics from other board cannot and will never reflect in the Naija board during your search.

That's how the forum search button works.

We have repeatedly said this in comments that members should make use of the search features and along side other forum tools that provides you are more easy and all in one place search results.

Forum search features is a bit technical for some newbies and you may not get all the results you want if you are searching with wrong format because the board you searched from determine the kind of results you get from the search and you could miss out such ways.

Just best to use multiple search sources to get accuracy that you are not creating a repeated topic that have been discussed.

If we invariably had to combine all synonymous threads and posts on the forum in general you'll probably shrink the page numbers by over 50%.

Anyways it's nice if more people used the search bar but the major limitation here is that a lot of them don't really use the key words properly. It's what narrows down what you want else your results will be more.

I have hardly used the search bar function because besides the fact that it is quite a technicality to breakdown, the basic reason why it exist is to prevent posting similar posts on the forum.

So those that normally only create post when there's a popular topic online, it's best for them . Also those who don't usually create topic but on few occasions should use the function to ensure ease or prevent a post being locked or deleted as soon as it's created.

If it is something you saw on the news that is recent, you can check the first page of the local board to know if someone has posted similar topic. I have use this several times and it has been helping.

I use the https://bitlist.co/search and sometimes I use the google search for it. I have used the forum search also before. It will be good if people are searching for existing post before they posted a topic about similar thing.

If it's a new information, after searching shouldn't the next thing be to confirm the dates of the thread that seem to be talking about the same thing, an exchange might have been hacked 4 years ago and a thread was created for it then to earn people about the breach and then recently the same exchange got hacked again, at this point would it make more sense to create a new thread altogether or would waking up the older thread be better, I believe starting a new thread is the better option here.

This one na wetin most people no dey use before them rush go make post, just imagine this forum has been existing for around 17 years now and which question you think say them neva asked for here before?
And this forum good say if you post, as long as wetin you talk make sense e go dey for you till further noticed and any person wey use the search function go see am there as e dey there. Anything wey person supposed asked e dey here already so e go good make them do small findings first.

​ well true but this isn't really about newbies alone even higher members do it too . We can understand that newbies often try to create threads even without doing proper research, and we end up seeing low quality topics or loopholes in their threads, which gives us the opportunity as higher members in the forum to help fill up those holes where they are lacking or perhaps give them a better perspective on what they don't understand.that said to me that's not really a repeated topic but that doesn't really mean newbies shouldn't make use of the search bar. Perhaps , I believe newbies should focus more on research than creating topics, and when they don't understand something, then they can create a thread about it... That said the fact that this issue isn't only for newbies remains, which means other members should try as much as possible to also make use of the search bar even if it's a similar topic but still it would be good if we get to see new information , Ideas and prespective .what makes a topic repetitive isn't the thread title but the thread it Self ..that's all.....
