In our country democracy only means implementing policies on the people. The ruler tries to strengthen the country's democracy until he gets the votes. When the ruler is elected the people do not get their full rights which makes democracy incomplete. The ruler will betray the people's opinion rights law fair treatment and even the promise of fulfilling the needs of the people and the people will become slaves of the ruler. If the people ever get a chance to say something they will say something or the other and distort the people's decision. In this way a democracy of our country can be of any good where the people have the right to vote but are not allowed to improve their lives and financial stability.
Policies been implemented on the citizens and the leaders been above the law do not only happen in your country same also do happen in my country, in my country laws are limited to only citizens but not to leaders. I am confused on how laws are been exercised in my country because in my country no matter what leaders do they are not held responsible but if such is done by citizens they will be severely punished without regret. With what is happening in my country today i am convinced that there is no democracy in my country and i think other name should be given to the system of government in my country Nigeria because we never for once experienced democracy and will not until their is total restructuring in our system of government.

Have anyone of you seen a 100 percent democratic country since your childhood. I haven't because no country is perfect at all. Some problems are there always. However there are a few countries which aren't perfect but they do care about democracy's, believe in of the people , for the people and by the people and are very close to be called 100 percent like Norway( haven't to share any link Because everybody knew that).
But there are so called Democratic countries having zero percent of democracy like Pakistan( I am myself a resident) but the media is in there control(Establishment) , the elected were jailed while they selected a person of there own. They show the world that they are pure souls but instead they are dictators. Same is the case with north Korea and Russia as well. May Be the procedures are a bit different..
Is democracy just a showoff label for the dictators now ?
there is not a single country in the world who has 100% democracy. Although most of the country in the world called democracy. I belong to Bangladesh and I saw it since my childhood people are still fighting for a good democracy. The United States is one of the model of democracy but I think there is no 100% democracy. Meanwhile in the third world democracy is so far away from the people. whatever democracy, autocracy, monarchy nothing is perfect or 100% problems in every where. practicing democracy is good for educated people, people who have awareness about their rights and they have respect on democracy. in the 3rd world where education system is not up to standard. it is difficult to establish a democratic society.

To be honest, when it comes to our country, democracy is limited only to the constitution. I have not seen its application in real life so far. For the last 15 years, dictatorship has ruled our country in the name of democracy and it fell through a movement. And last year, another dictators are came again in the name of that democracy. Actually nowadays, the term democracy has emerged as an umbrella for dictators in the international arena. Not only to deceive the citizens of the nation but also to seek international aid and help, they stage these fraudulent elections. You will observe that it is always very easy for any large international organization or any donor nation to deal with a government which is just a democracy in name. Therefore, the leaders who have gained a monopoly on power create a perfect performance with the use of ballot box and the media in order to establish themselves as legitimate in the international arena. In reality democracy has now become a legitimate title rather than securing the rights of the people.
You are absolutely right, i also have same opinion, who has dare to speaks about Palestine issues or about Epstein files. I have witnessed on the social media that wherever you belongs to, you do not have complete freedom to speak about them publicly. Even if you pass any objections about the institution which is your right, but you have to pay the price of it. I have observed that many who attempted to talk about sensitive issues they suddenly missed, or killed by someone. Or faces jails, after witnessing many cases i realize that not all but many countries have fake democracy system. Behind every democratic system, actually dictatorship is working or their roots are so deep that no one can retaliate against it. It is a drama that is usually exercise for the satisfaction of the public, otherwise democracy is not working with full potential. Often work under the shadow of dictatorship. In short system is designed in such way that some culprit are doing fake acting of democracy Infront of public, while dictators are using them like puppets.

Democracy in other countries may be okay but our country's democracy is only in name but there is no implementation of democracy in practice. 100% democracy means where all the freedoms of the citizens of that country, personal opinions, everything is open to the people but the people of my country are just hostages in the hands of the government. Before the election, the 100% shows the application of democracy but after being elected, the government is separated from the people. That is why I think this government in my country has no role in the participation of the people and protecting the freedom and rights of the people. Even though the government makes various promises before the election, it cannot keep the promises of the people after being elected.

Politics has now reached a stage where politics is not for good people, all those who have become leaders in politics and are leading the people are either terrorists or mafia gangs. So they cannot do anything good for the country in any way, that is why the country is gradually moving towards the dictatorial path, the party that comes to power creates more and more oppression on the people. That is why people are increasingly leaning towards developed countries for employment and residence, because there is no corruption or any sign of oppression in developed countries. So to live a happy life and to improve their future even more, they are creating employment in foreign lands.

I completely agree that Norway and some other Nordic countries have a very strong democratic system and this ranking provides a very useful way in which we can compare countries based on their government accountability, elections and civil liberties. But I don't think that democracy can be entirely judged on an index. Sometimes a country performs really well in official measurements but citizens are not that satisfied with the system and how it works. We cannot dismiss these rankings and systems just because everyone's experience is not described here. This is based on well-established criteria and it provides a very good way to compare each country. A perfect democratic system may not exist but some countries clearly protect the rights better than other countries. We should focus more on how good each system is and how effectively it is protecting the rights of the people and also responding to their needs.
That is why I said the index is just a reference point, since none of us really knows what life is like over there. Theory and reality can be worlds apart sometimes. A country may score highly on elections and civil liberties, or government accountability , but that doesn't mean all its citizens are happy with how the system works or feel their rights are adequately protected . But anyway , I think pretty much all of us can agree that no country is 100% democratic

Democracy is an illusion the government portrays to its citizens to make them think they are free. Majority of countries that practice democracy are still being controlled by select people in power. Yes there are countries who have systems in place to protect it's citizens and to give them more rights of freedom than other countries but I still strongly believe in these same countries there are families and powers you dare not cross even at your right because the law and power is in their hand to override your democratic right.
Whereas some countries under dictators are going through the worst nightmares any man ought to face, like North Korea you can't openly speak against the government even if they are at wrong because you can be severely punished.
Which leads me to ponder: is democracy a polished dictatorship because at whichever point power is still in the hands of few people and they control both the government and the masses albeit using different methods.

Indeed no country is perfect at all , no hundred percent democracy even if people are also complaining about our country there are things we are always enjoying here that in other countries they can't even enjoy it... I don't pay light bill, I don't pay water bill , and many other bill that we don't pay in our end , but in so many countries they pay all this bills making it harder in there country, but one thing we are just lacking in this country Nigeria is insecurity the level of insecurity is too much, but in other countries too they are also facing it. So in one way or together something not right so no hundred percent democracy.

Actually the real test of democracy is not just how leaders come into power but how they treat the people they are elected to serve and I also believe that democracy can never be prefect but that shouldn’t countries from continuously improving their institutions and protecting the rights of the citizens, after all leadership should be about serving the people not creating privilege for a few at the expense of everyone else.

Honestly, democracy sometimes look like a sham to give civilians with popularity unusual power. Coming from a very corrupt country, most time the general consensus here is that elections are rigged and our votes don't count and that's a sign that the whole system is wonky, other things is protest on human right violence not being heard, policies to embezzle funds from public office

I don't think that any country has a 100% democracy rate. There are hundreds of weaknesses in every political system. But there is a big difference between when a country has democratic problems and when its democracy is being deliberately weakened by those who have power. There are countries that hold elections, but still they are failing to protect the rights of the people and the choices of the media are being controlled by those who are in power; opposition leaders are being jailed or institutions work under political pressure and take decisions accordingly. True democracy is not just about holding elections; it is way more than that.
It requires an independent judiciary system; it requires freedom of speech for everyone, accountability for wrongdoing and also respect for the people and their mandate. There are countries like Norway that are very close to a democratic system but they are not perfect. The test is whether its citizens can criticize their government, can replace the leaders by elections and can also hold powerful people accountable without having any fear. Democracy is something that should be defined by how power is exercised, not by the label the government gives itself.

Switzerland, and it is boring to death.
Literally I didn't knew that and I came to know just now when I saw your comment then I search it and google said that it is far more Democratic than Norway. And the decision is made by the people directly , if they don't like any law made by the parliament, they just collect 50k signatures and rejects it. Wow! Its just mind blowing. By the way why you are bored do you live in Switzerland? I think you like a country with a bit spices , salt and pepper. You are just fed up of too much relaxation or comfort. I am just kidding don't mind please! Not sure tbh, but going by criteria like electoral process, functioning of government, political participation, political culture and civil liberties. It's actually Norway that's held the top spot for 16 years in a row so far, with a 9.8 score. Right behind it are New Zealand and the rest of the Nordics. Switzerland has ranked somewhere between 5th and 8th, depending on the year, and Norway has never scored a perfect 10. So I'd say no country is 100% democratic. That said , this is just a reference point . We've got no real idea what life is like on the ground over there. https://www.prnewswire.com/news-releases/eiu-democracy-index-2025-democracy-stabilises-after-eight-years-of-decline-302734863.htmlIf you check through the table you brought, you will see that most of the countries that are there are European countries, however i believe that democracy is not only about the electoral process itself, it is about the character and the personnel of people in that society, the social engineering of a people in a particular geographical location sometimes determine how democratic they are in their affairs. In today's World Europe is one of the most sorted part of the world that a lot of people want to go, not that it is the best place in the world but it's because of how those of them that are running the affairs of the European countries decide to make political and democratic affairs free and fair to a good extent, and that is why you see them grow their economy and manage themselves properly.

In a large part of the world, countries function as 'flawed democracies' nations where elections are merely nominal, while the real control of power remains in the hands of a select circle. Although elections in these countries are presented as a benchmark for democracy, they do not in reality serve as a genuine means for the public to express their will. They are merely a staged drama designed to facilitate a transfer of power or to confer a veneer of legitimacy, where pre election promises are nothing more than empty rhetoric. True democracy has yet to take root.

I agree with you, some country when you talk about accountability is zero, security wise zero , election problem everyday when you still talk about the freedom of speech sometimes is not always free because freedom of speech but to have the freedom after speech is a big problem, speak the truth you are now in a big problem, in every country democracy can't be 100% there must be something that will spoil the nation, look at US america and London, in all the movies we watch almost all if not everyone has a gun , this simple means that no place is save even the security of that place they don't search the way they do in Nigeria here , is as if security don't have the right to search the citizens.

Agree with your point that democracy is measured by how much power ordinary people have. The actual power is not only what is written in the constitution. Or by how elections are being conducted. But I don’t think that it is okay to say that democracy is tool for dictators to benefit from. There are leader who have manipulated democratic institutions for their own benefit. Country does not automatically become democratic. By only having elections. If citizens do not have freedom or they cannot freely question their leaders on their policies. If the opposition parties cannot compete fairly with each other and the constitution is not able to make people accountable for their powers, then there is no democracy and it is of no use. Main test of democracy is: do people have power so that they can remove their leader through free and fair process? If they have done something wrong? They can enjoy their fundamental rights as citizens of country and can also demand accountability without having any fear.

Like you said “no country is perfect”. The thing is even countries that practise democracy still have issues like corruption, unequal representation and political influence.
Although, I believe that countries may come close but there will always be a room for improvement. True democracy should ensure that people’s rights should be respected.
