AI has become the biggest threat right now. It is more threat to bitcoin even than quantum computers right now. I also think AI make it easy for people that do not know much about hacking to be able to become professional hackers just by the AI helping them to know what they can do to do their dirty work. AI is a threat to everything that can be hacked, and some aspects of bitcoin is among them.
Vulnerabilities that would have taken these hackers a long time to discover and exploit are now being discovered and exploited within short periods with the assistance of artificial intelligence. Applications and websites can be designed cheaply and fast with AI, making these tools a threat to all sectors. When it was reported that some terrorists in my country are using AI to develop and launch explosives, I saw the evil aspects of this new technology. AI technology is here to stay, so Bitcoiners would have to keep taking proactive steps to protect the industry.

It is not necessarily a bigger threat.  Using 'AI' to get some vulnerabilities out of a source code still means you have to know what to do with it.  A traditional hacker could simply discover a way more disastrous vulnerability than a machine could, so it depends how you measure the threat level.

I'm already thinking way beyond this, what if super computer comes ? Shocked Shocked
We adapt or we do not.  Ideally, these 'super computers' will be gradually integrated in the hands of companies and then of average people.  If they can destroy a lot of things, they can destroy the Internet.  Many data bases, many servers, they could all have almost zero security in front of a 'super computer'.  And considering how much personal information sits in so many storage devices connected to the outside World, I would assume we will first have to have things ready before such a thing would reach our hands.  Other wise, that would be like handing out weapons to people before authorities even have shields against them.

This is just an upgrade of the tools of hackers. Is there any difference between traditional hackers and AI-assisted hackers? You can say that hackers are now able to hack faster with the help of AI or are able to find vulnerabilities.

Most hackers are taking the help of AI and are attacking by finding vulnerabilities. Traditional hackers are basically taking the help of AI, so traditional hackers and AI-assisted hackers are basically the same. It is true that AI has now become a big threat to Bitcoin. It has made the work of hackers easier and it is very easy for AI to detect mistakes that are very difficult for humans to detect.

AI can do good and harm and if the intention is to threat the security of any platform that includes bitcoin's network, it's possible. We've seen how many hacks have happened recently, in the crypto casinos and if it's combined with these clever minds of these hackers. It can be very threatening just like the other day, it was AI that have found the bug in php. So, we can't remove the fact that with all of these incidents, the use of ai and how quickly it evolves can be a threat not only to bitcoin but also for other systems that might have some critical flaw.

I stumbled upon this news that Bitcoin Core, one of the oldest Bitcoin wallet software applications which was first released in 2009 has changed its security disclosure policy because AI is making it easier to discover vulnerabilities that hackers could exploit.

here's what the article says,

Quote
Bitcoin Core has changed its security disclosure policy to speed up fixes for vulnerabilities that large language models can find with little effort, ending the months-long embargoes those bugs once received.

Maintainers merged the change to the project’s security policy on Thursday. Chaincode Labs developer Antoine Poinsot, who wrote the proposal, announced it in a message to the Bitcoin Development Mailing List the same day.

“We recently experienced an increase in the number of reports for security vulnerabilities that can be easily (re-)discovered,” Poinsot wrote. “This is largely due to LLMs drastically reducing the bar to find certain classes of issues or identify covert fixes.”

So question, is AI the bigger threat now?

AI becomes more and more advanced every day but for the most part its something that is very far and I mean very very far off before it becomes to be a real threat for bitcoin holders who are keeping their coins on up to date wallets.

Either it's a threat or not, I know one thing. It is forcing every lazy developer out there to work on the projects they created but never worked on afterwards to make them hack-proof or at least more solid. Even BTC had two vulnerabilities, and now, with AI, what if someone finds another one? But that's a hypothetical statement.

Yes, AI is a big threat, and this post is not the first one to make anyone realize that. There have been a lot of hacks that have occurred because of AI usage, and I believe the models released, like Ollama, have contributed the most because online LLMs have a lot of restrictions that hackers could not get around.

But where AI is being used to hack, it is also being used by developers to make it better using the same technology. So after a few years, this phase will probably end, and the projects will come out of this phase better and more secure than before.

Isn't it terrible, if it's true that this is all done by hackers using AI for their attacks? But until now I have not seen an article in which suppose a researcher that the current exploitation is due to AI.
Blackrock, Coinbase, Strategy, funded $15m prepare to face quantum computers to save their bitcoin. - https://cryptoslate.com/460-billion-bitcoin-risk-draws-blackrock-coinbase-and-strategy-into-15m-quantum-computing-defense-push/
Including with this new data leak recently from a hardware company, I think it's all because of AI, and the hackers are now pretty smart about where they found the loopholes.

Hackers build AI model through which they can find security loopholes in all systems that are not easily noticed by human eyes. Maybe they are from a specific group or country targeting all systems around crypto space.

But on the other hand many AI models are also being developed so that there are no such loopholes in the system. If this is used to detect system loophole to solve it they can easily protect them. The problem will mainly stay same only to those small company that doesnt have access to that AI model or they simply ignore it.

AI is merely just a tool in the right or wrong hand just we fear quantum computers would be, that's how AI is.
So any fears should be countered with better upgrades in knowledge and software system and more vigilance is needed because AI right now can be so real, you think it's a human.

Hackers didn't build AI, they only know how to manipulate it better to their taste and if developers can do same to counter this, then AI would be and serve us just fine and be of greater benefit than we think.

The way I see it, it is not whether a hacker or AI is becoming the bigger threat, it is the combination of both.  Hackers with AI assistants are very dangerous because hackers can easily detect vulnerabilities on any security system with the help of AI. We have read news about how AI detects vulnerabilities, so thinking that Hackers using AI focus on finding security vulnerabilities can easily break any security script that is created with weak code and vulnerabilities in it.

AI on its own is not threat to anybody, but its still the same traditional hackers who are using this AI tools to search for possible vulnerabilities around an online system. Because before the invention of sophisticated AI tools, hackers use to search for possible vulnerabilities around a system manually, of which since these AI tools got invented, it has made work much easier for hackers, which is why I guess the group of Bitcoin developers had to increase the security of Bitcoin core.

...very far off you say? The mistake anyone can make now is to underestimate how quickly AI is advancing both in the positive angle and in the negative angle. There are already reports of hacks done with the help AI and now, Bitcoin Core is changing its security disclosure policy because of this same threat. I don't think  the threat is still far away as you claim.

AI is seriously advancing, developers are using it to fix vulnerabilities and hackers are using it to identify vulnerabilities. The thought of this alone should make everyone conscious at all time and at least, ensure that their wallets are up to date.

AI itself is not a threat. Not yet, at least.  "Traditional" hackers are still needed to do the "dirty" work.

To be honest, the biggest change here really is that speed.  Developers can no longer afford to hold onto a patch and hope that no one finds the same bug.  Its making us move way faster and thats probably a good thing in the long run, even if it can be a little frustrating at the moment.

I agree with you.  AI is still hacking because someone is telling it to (at least as far as we know).  The danger is still terrible human beings for now.  With the use of AI though, they are going to cause so many problems...  So far I haven't heard about anything too bad, but it is still very early.  I just hope that Coinbase never gets hacked, because they're holding so much BTC for so many different major entities, I don't see how the Bitcoin community could recover.  Let us hope that the major Bitcoin exchanges are being overly cautious at the moment.

I'm already thinking way beyond this, what if super computer comes ? Shocked Shocked
A complete disaster it will be, trust me...

Banks and military servers will be nailed to bits.
Yes AI is a bigger threat to Bitcoin security, traditional hackers who haven't opt to AI yet are missing out.

This is exactly how I am seeing this whole thing unfolding, to be honest I don't work with Bitcoin Devs and I don't know how prepared they are but I am scared and positive at the same time.

If these threats aren't coming we wouldn't know how many vulnerabilities we have been gambling with so far, so it's good and bad at the same time..
Supercomputers will definitely become a threat to many security systems around the world.

But here's the thing, the government will not allow such technology to fall into the wrong hands, and they will likely keep a close eye on it. Maybe it will be sold or developed on the black market, but most people will probably have to pay a lot of money to get their hands on one.

AI is already becoming far more advanced than I ever expected, and we can see how hackers are exploiting its abilities to discover security flaws and use them against others.

If artificial intelligence were restricted to only the government,  then maybe we wouldn't have to deal with so many of the problems we face today.

AI makes things easier by helping us complete almost any task we ask it to perform. If hackers try to exploit it for purposes it was not designed for, then the AI itself is not really to blame.

It is simply a tool, and people are responsible for how they use it.

The same thing will happen with every advanced technology that emerges in the future.

The PHP security vulnerability that was discovered some time ago was the result of a code audit by an independent research team with the help of AI *cmiiw*. Just imagine if that vulnerability had been discovered by a malicious hacker it could have been a huge disaster because so many websites use PHP.

That is one proof of how AI can be such a powerful tool in finding security issues. In the next few years, as AI becomes more advanced and more accessible to many people, we might hear a lot of reports about security vulnerabilities being discovered, whether by AI-assisted researchers or even by malicious hackers.

But I don't want to say it's a 'threat' because, to me, AI is like a double-edged sword --- depending on who uses it, it can be good or worse. So, this might push developers to take security even more seriously in what they create.

So question, is AI the bigger threat now?

I am aware of the AI threat for a while and ColdCard hack was particulary distressing for me personally, and left me wondering how safe other wallets are.

But my main concern is what are implications to majority of people, regular users?

I already noticed that phishing e-mails became MUCH more legitimate looking, and it probably became easier to launch large number of custom phishing attacks that target exact individual.

There really isn’t a distinction between traditional and AI assisted hackers. As technology evolves, hackers are going to use whatever tools are available to them, including AI. Hacking in general has become a bigger threat because of how efficient AI makes the process. Some of these exploits where millions of dollars have been stolen are sometimes committed by script kiddies who had access to advanced LLMs.
Indeed, AI turns out a huge help to hackers by easily sighting those vulnerabilities before being detected. However, AI also turns out the key for security experts to easily trace and detect those suspicious activities and eventually stop them.

AI could be an advantage for hackers but on the other hand, it could also be a big disadvantage for them that they cannot be ignored.

I am aware of the AI threat for a while and ColdCard hack was particulary distressing for me personally, and left me wondering how safe other wallets are.

But my main concern is what are implications to majority of people, regular users?

I already noticed that phishing e-mails became MUCH more legitimate looking, and it probably bevame easier to launch large number of custom phishing attacks that target exact individual.

AI is improving day by day; phishing emails look more professional than before, and even the scammers' AI videos look more real people, which attracts you more if you didn't notice that it was generated video from AI.
I have a small business promoting my product on a social media account, and I create my video through AI, providing only an image and prompts to generate that looks authentic real person talking to the video. In the past you could spot which one was AI-generated, but nowadays it looks real.

So this is a big threat to any wallet because it does not need so much knowledge about coding; you just need to ask the AI to do something about the wallet and look for vulnerabilities.

Hate to say it but AI comes as two-faced. They become asset and great tools for hackers to easily exploit its targets but AI can also be an edge for security measures so we can prevent and stop those hackers from hacking us. This is a reminder for us to stay more vigilant and cautious, and be more responsible in securing our bitcoin security, that's the only thing we can do other than studying how this AI becomes a highlight in making hacks easily possible.

So question, is AI the bigger threat now?

I don't think transitional hackers has ever been a problem because with their tricks you can always outsmart them and protect your investment very well but with AI advancement, even with all the precaution you take. your Boiler might still be at risk because we don't really know how far AI are getting more starter as the days go by and how secured our wallets are.

I have been reading about how AI are being used in reversed engineering and what can be done with AI hacking platforms/Apps, websites etc. Our fear has always been computers that are smart to decode our probate key information and AI might just be getting there pretty soon.

Do our wallets have vulnerabilities that haven't been exploited yet and who knows what could happen in few years into the advancement of AI. We just have to hope at this point that our wallet provider's are at the top of their game and not vulnerable as the website and other apps are being this days.
