It's best the government steps in and put in some of those regulations that will help the citizens.

The problem of most people in our society today is that they expect the government to do everything for them, without them helping themselves.

The south African government knows their citizens more than you think, and the xenophobic attack that took place in their country demonstrated how lazy the south African citizens are, because their sentiment is that their government should be paying them a particular amount of money monthly, while they seat iddle and do nothing, so the foreigner that are working becomes a problem to them, since they are driving the best cars and living the best lives.

So am saying all this because when a society sees working for their living as problem, gambling will be like an easier alternative to make money to such people, so addiction will not be far, because even though gambling is regulated by the government, it will have little or no effect on them because their mind is programmed to see gambling as a means of earning a living.

I'm going to be honest, that far fetched dream that the lady talked about in the video got me more than anything, thinking that someone will eventually play out and it's making you bleed every single day and in the end you got nothing.

It's not even about gambling in my own case, I think far-fetched dreams needs to be study, it works more like a spell or addiction for a very long period of time, it's just like how many Bitcoin holders are holding right now.

Remember those people who lost all their Bitcoin to ColdCard? That kinda time, sometimes I feel like far-fetched dreams are more dangerous than many people think and most of them wouldn't want to accept it true.

But what about the solution of increasing taxes on gambling, hasn't it worked? I read one of the goals is to reduce the number of addicts. Or if they instead think of increased tax revenues from this sector as a surplus opportunity, I doubt the government will take another stab at the addiction problem.

This is really not making sense to me, how can the South Africa government be so incompetent when it comes to protecting its citizens from gambling addiction, especially when other countries are doing a better job.  I understand that citizens also have a responsibility to protect themselves by not allowing gambling to control their lives to the point where they can’t go a single day without gambling.  I keep saying people should see gambling as a game for fun and entertainment, not as a source of income.
By banning gambling the government will not get any effective advantage. Because there are many ways to use online casinos through which they can be used. Especially using crypto casinos is now much easier. The government should make people aware by bringing in rules and regulations so that they do not get addicted and can bet within the limits of the budget. And control the marketing strategy of casino sites where they will tempt people to bet uncontrollably for profit. Because now when a person starts using betting not for entertainment, he is at risk of financial loss. The possibility of becoming addicted increases a lot. Since the government cannot completely stop people from betting if wants rather if it is too strict curiosity will increase among those who have never bet. Then there will be negative marketing for the government's excessive strictness as a result new people may be attracted more. Therefore the government should ensure that people do not get addicted so that gambling related losses can be reduced.

I think gambling should be fun, but when a mother from a poor or low middle class home want to take Bitcoin as a source of income it is easy to become addicted and be at a loss. What that should be fun, recreational is being abused with costly effects.

While the South African government looks into regulations they should also touch on players gambling responsibly and importantly no under age gambling.

Isn't this same South African that were chasing out immigrants few months ago because they want them out, they think the are the sole reason why they are jobless. They complained the foreigners are taking their jobs and they want them out and weeks later, I saw reports that they have started the jobs foreigners left for them. Does that mean the citizens are lazy and don't want to work? Only lack of job employment will make these numbers to want to gamble and government will be worry

We have high online gamblers form here and the government is not concerned because they know they can't do anything about it. When the government failed to do their job, provide for people, they will take their life in their hands and do what can bring things to the table. Although, we are hardworking people, I can't say for South Africans because they complained alot and are very lazy.

It’s really disheartening seeing a lady who trusted on making quick money through gambling, she lamented with bitterness about how gambling has drained her finances.

The bitter truth is that there are so many people in this world that are experiencing the same situation as this lady. I have also encountered a person who was a compulsive gambler, he got to a stage where he started selling his properties so he could rise money for gambling. Now, picture yourself in a situation where you must sell your assets in order to gamble.

That is one of the main reasons I think individuals need to be aware of that gambling isn't some kind of stable and reliable income, just because of the desire to win so badly, they lose sight of the fact that they're losing money.

The pandemic issue has become a serious problem for South Africa. Many businesses and companies are not operating again because they are owned by foreigners, and South Africans have deported foreigners.

The unemployment rate has skyrocketed. In a situation where people can't earn by working or raise money for business, gambling would always be a way people might think to make money for themselves. Even if people do lose, some will win a huge amount of money, and the desperation to win can make them more addicted. When there is so much unemployment, the gambling rate will increase, and the government needs to do something about it to help citizens.

It is possible that the government of south african are not paying attention to this because because they are getting their revenue from then casinos but this could be a problem to them in the long run if they don't deal with the issue of gambling addiction in the country. The best thing for them to do right now to curb gambling the rate of gambling addiction is for it to be regulated. Gambling should be for entertainment but the problem is that a lot of people try to make it a source of income.

Sometimes we should first consider what triggered this over population of addicted gamblers around the world and the solution to it, because if we should start interviewing most of the addicted gamblers, we are going to see and understand that most of the gamblers never choose such a for themselves but out of frustrations that they can't deal with, and instead of stealing, most of involved themselves in so much addicted in gambling and drinking, selling of properties just to gamble, I'm not always happy when i see such a touch story because i can remember when things were very hard for me and i tried to see if i could get myself a job and i couldn't archive that and the only option that was left with me is to gamble,

Majority of gamblers started gambling to make profit and when this profit is not forthcoming they become frustrated and start gambling aggressively, like the first lady she was into gambling to make more money not for fun that is why she lost that much try to recover her lost money. If more job opportunities are provided with reasonable salaries for the society I am sure things like this will not happen because a person who is employed will not have that much time to seat and be gambling though most employed individual still gamble for fun especially the ones whose earn is high, I am still surprised on how South Africa has not been able to tackle or regulate gambling activities this late, but it's good news that they are into it now.

During the pandemic, online casinos became a trending and opportunity for people due to people had no other source of income during these times because all establishment
businesses were closed.
During a pandemic online casinos become trending because people have nothing to do, most people get addicted to gambling not even because they are looking for an extra source of income, they are just idle. It is true that some people started gambling during this time as a result of not having any source of Income but every adult knows that thinks logically knows that gambling cannot be a source of income. When the rate of unemployment increases gambling addiction also increases as well not only because of they need to make money but also because their mind is idle.

Some people can later go to stealing after they tried gambling and it did not work out for them. I have also thought that gambling can be the way for me before and I lost high amount of money before I get back to my senses. Gambling should be done with small amount of money. No need to be looking for money through gambling, it will never work that way. The gambling sites even included gambling responsibly on the terms and conditions.

While the South African government looks into regulations they should also touch on players gambling responsibly and importantly no under age gambling.
The complain on the increasing number of irresponsible gambler is not just geographically based and apart from the case of south Africa, most other African countries are equally going through similar issue and part of the challenge is that with means of survival becoming a big issue, youth will always resort to using gambling as a way of escape from the harsh economic reality.

South Africa is even big on sports and so, their interest in sports will draw them to becoming more involved in sports betting. coming out of addiction is more of a personal responsibility and if you know you are one that struggle getting control on your gambling push, it is better not to start it in the first place or to be very conscious of how you are exposed to gambling

I've read in this article that South Africa's total gambling turnover last year was around 1.5 trillion, a large portion of which came from online gambling. Problem is that more than 65% of adult participate in gambling but approximately 31% of those who gamble are problem gambler. There are many who even take out loans to gamble. What a terrible situation.

People from these poor and lower middle class family might be viewing gambling as source of income. That is why risk of addiction and ruin has increased so significantly for them. They become dependent on gambling to earn money and as a result they do not engage in any work.
This is a very scary data. 65% of the population gambling is already a major course of concern and 31% of that number already suffering addiction. South Africa is not much of a poor country so I don't know how gambling have such penetration as though people then see it as a way out of their poverty. Could this have a link to the unrest we have seen in that country?

"... thinking it would be a quick way to solve her financial problems."

Well, thinking is one thing, reality is something else. We all learn that, sooner or later... And when it comes to gambling, we always return to rule number one: Don't spend more than you can afford to lose! Once you cross that line, you start chasing losses and dig your hole deeper.

Online gambling exploded in all countries & continents. Easier access, crazy marketing tactics that promise big wins/prizes, and getting into something blindly without any research is just a call for disaster. Gambling is a vice... it's like playing with fire, and I can't blame the fire because it's hot! I think that individual responsibility has to come first! We can't complain much about getting burned if we choose to jump into the fire!

But what about the solution of increasing taxes on gambling, hasn't it worked? I read one of the goals is to reduce the number of addicts. Or if they instead think of increased tax revenues from this sector as a surplus opportunity, I doubt the government will take another stab at the addiction problem.

I doubt if increasing taxes would be affective in tackling this problem they're having in their country because taxes are not paid when you deposit money or when you loss it but however is actually when you win and want to withdraw that's actually when taxes would be applicable so definitely an addicted person wouldn't see it as any problem that should discourage them from gambling, especially those that are hardly wining, although if it will be possible for them the only way to reduce or solve this is a national banned of gambling in the country with a certain condition, so that every gambling site will also restrict them.

From this NEWS there is an online gambling pandemic in South Africa and it is as bad as you can imagine.

Due to this raging pandemic South Africans are calling for better regulations to online gambling, South Africans are complaining of being addicted to online gambling and it is affecting them.

Watching the video and listening to the first woman it is clear that she gamblers irresponsibly, doesn't have any control of her emotions and I wonder if she does this in the right frame of mind.

Thats crazy work OP , when you put it into that perspective, some folks who have families in need of food and starving will gamble away the money they have for that out of pure addiction and thats where it gets scary. You cant let yourself get to that point, thats bad.

There's no way the government will not pay attention to this kind of situation, I am not from there to know how well the government are seriously handling the situation but based on the information we see online, it doesn't really say that the government are doing nothing, just that we can't say whether they are reluctant or taking it so serious.

Why some people make it a source of income is probably because they need supplemental earning, although it won't have been a bad idea but the lack of self control is what leads to addiction, even if someone wants to gamble for supplemental earning, they should make responsible gambling a priority.

"... thinking it would be a quick way to solve her financial problems."

The fact is that this applies not only to South Africa, but the key feature of the popularity of online gambling is its simplicity and the great desire of many players around the world to get rich here and now in an instant, preferably quickly. A big role in this was played by social networks, in which the demonstration of a rich life forces players to take greater risks in order to try to achieve the same. I am not surprised by this for a minute, but the main thing is to maintain resistance to uncontrollable self-indulgence, we must remember this.

Watching the video and listening to the first woman it is clear that she gamblers irresponsibly, doesn't have any control of her emotions and I wonder if she does this in the right frame of mind.

I think that is the woman they called Sisanda Lwana from the video. She simply blamed addiction but addiction starts from somewhere and for gambling, it starts as greed, chasing of loses. Nothing cause a gambler to lose emotional control if not chasing of loses.

I think gambling should be fun, but when a mother from a poor or low middle class home want to take Bitcoin as a source of income it is easy to become addicted and be at a loss. What that should be fun, recreational is being abused with costly effects.

I have been an evangelist on this that, not very many people gamble for fun despite what they preach. Majority gamble for the intended profit and not for the fun. When you have the mindset of having gambling as a source of income, you must get addicted. The earlier we started to watch and work against that, the better for that gambler

While the South African government looks into regulations they should also touch on players gambling responsibly and importantly no under age gambling.

One of the advise was to tax 20% on the casinos and gambling platforms but I don't know how that can stop or reduce gambling addiction on individuals. Regulation for me have not prevented people from gambling. What I think is for the government to encourage citizens to be gainfully employed by also providing enabling environment for white collar jobs and micro businesses. That will take some people off the hook of gambling. For example, I don't believe that 50% of poor people will continue gambling if they have better jobs. That woman in that video interview won't continue gambling if she saw better opportunity.
