From this NEWS there is an online gambling pandemic in South Africa and it is as bad as you can imagine.

Due to this raging pandemic South Africans are calling for better regulations to online gambling, South Africans are complaining of being addicted to online gambling and it is affecting them.

Watching the video and listening to the first woman it is clear that she gamblers irresponsibly, doesn't have any control of her emotions and I wonder if she does this in the right frame of mind.

I think gambling should be fun, but when a mother from a poor or low middle class home want to take Bitcoin as a source of income it is easy to become addicted and be at a loss. What that should be fun, recreational is being abused with costly effects.

While the South African government looks into regulations they should also touch on players gambling responsibly and importantly no under age gambling.

Seems their government over there pay less attention to matters like this. Other countries have already pulled the weight. I see no reason why you would wait until your citizens are biting their fingers before you act. As of now, I don't think the government have even made any move at all.

Let's be honest with ourselves. There is so much regulations can do. And it can't eliminate behaviours like this. But it has proven to reduce the financial impact on families and how it affects the society.

It's best the government steps in and put in some of those regulations that will help the citizens.

Thinking about what that woman in the video said gives me goosebumps.

When people turn to gambling out of desperation, viewing it as a source of income and a shortcut solution then situation spirals completely out of control.

I don't know how people fail to grasp that gambling is just entertainment, it's not a job or source of income!

When mothers or girls from lower middle class family or individual struggling financially fall into this trap. Actually they end up facing even greater hardship and loss.

If we are not aware of ourselves, then no matter how much the government makes laws about gambling, it will not be able to save us from the terrible destruction of gambling, it is a fact. To be protected from the horrors of gambling, we must be aware of ourselves and take care that gambling does not become a part of life. We must understand that gambling can never help change our lives. When we gamble within our means, control our emotions, keep our minds calm, accept the results and control ourselves from gambling repeatedly with the mindset of getting back the lost money, we will be able to protect ourselves from the horrors of gambling. When we see gambling only as a part of entertainment, we will be able to enjoy its fun and it will not become a big threat to our lives.

The government must make laws to protect the general people from the horrors of gambling and implement them properly so that casinos and the general people comply with them properly, through which the general people can be saved from the horrors of gambling.

If there's no control anymore, I think the government badly needs to step in. Probably, they need to shut down every online casino that is available in their region and try to regulate only a few so that they can monitor the players and how they gamble.
It will not be easy to do this because that means lesser taxes that will be received by the government but if it is for the own good of their people, then I think it is worth it. Well, unless they are corrupt and just want to keep on receiving money and do not really care about their people.

How would government help? Shutting down is same as banning, that was discussed previously many times, did not help much. Will regulation help? Gambling plague has already been spread. Government is fighting not with problem, but with consequences already. They should have started doing long time ago. Gambling has spread its roots everyone. Severing one root not going to help much.

Personally I dont know how to fight with gambling addiction. Because all the methods used I saw help little, and for a little period of time. Gamblers always find way to bypass preventive measures.

I've read in this article that South Africa's total gambling turnover last year was around 1.5 trillion, a large portion of which came from online gambling. Problem is that more than 65% of adult participate in gambling but approximately 31% of those who gamble are problem gambler. There are many who even take out loans to gamble. What a terrible situation.

People from these poor and lower middle class family might be viewing gambling as source of income. That is why risk of addiction and ruin has increased so significantly for them. They become dependent on gambling to earn money and as a result they do not engage in any work.

I think it's the government that has to act now. Although gambling is not really bad because it's up to people whether they gamble responsibly or not, but for a country where unemployment is quite high, with a reported 8.5 million unemployed in the second quarter of 2026, these people might see gambling as a solution to their financial problems.

IMO, gambling is supposed to be for entertainment while accepting that losing is part of it, so making it easily accessible to people who are already struggling financially could really create a bigger problem.

They need to act now.

If gambling is considered as a platform for regular earning, then it is natural that a terrible situation will arise there. If a person leaves work and wastes most of his time only in online gambling, then it is not possible for him to earn. When he wins a few times in gambling, he tries to make different plans about it. For him, gambling becomes a means of getting rich or earning money, but when he starts losing, he is able to understand its intensity. Despite knowing the negative aspects of gambling, some people continue to gamble in the hope of recovering their losses.

It is not possible to control gambling only through rules and regulations by the government. In this case, the general public of the country should also gain awareness about this matter. Even if the government bans it, currently anyone can also get involved in online illegal gambling platforms so everyone should be more careful particularly towards minor. Therefore, if the general public also has a higher understanding about gambling, then it is possible to control it. Gambling should be prohibited for minors, and all family members should be vigilant so that no minors become addicted to gambling.

In the video, the woman appears not to feel guilty about her gambling and I am quite concerned that this is just one small example whereas out there are still many women gamblers who are much worse than this. I do not know the extent of the seriousness of the African government in dealing with gambling, because I find the government is more focused on raising taxes but negligent in solving addiction or illegal gambling, which obviously this imbalance will only trigger the economic destruction of society.

When people look to gambling as a means of livelihood it becomes a problem for themselves and the society. For what is happening in that news report, I don’t see why we’re shouting government to step in. You want them to ban all the gambling sites or what?.. What regulations do y’all think the government can do in such situations? These companies pay their tax and other charges to the government.
It’s the people who decide to over use their platform and get addicted that’s a problem.
The problem I see here is addiction cause it blinds you to sound reasoning, the only help is rehabilitation cos the lady in the video said she uses her salary meaning she earns an income.

If there's no control anymore, I think the government badly needs to step in. Probably, they need to shut down every online casino that is available in their region and try to regulate only a few so that they can monitor the players and how they gamble.
I have read some comments and most of them are demanding the intervention of the government to resolve the present problem. Yes I know, I can't deny the fact that the intervention of the government in power will play a significant role in addressing the situation at hands. But the players or the citizens also need to understand that gamble is not a full time jobs. There has never been a time gamble becomes a source of income, this is what people's really need to get straight into their skull else things will still get worst if they failed to acknowledge this fact.

However, if the government can also put down a strict restrictions or measure against underage gambling,  and also ensure people gamble for the rightful purpose and not the other way round everything will be fine again. And most importantly,  in as much as putting down regulations accross various platforms,  encouraging responsible gambling and any other helpful measures put in place by the government, they should also ensure they create jobs opportunity, empowerment program etc, just anything to keep the citizens engaged and at the end of the day can put food on the table. This will go a very long way in giving a lasting solution to the current situation.

While the South African government looks into regulations they should also touch on players gambling responsibly and importantly no under age gambling.
This is likely to happen from the country where leaders aren't giving attention to the needs of the people. Gambling arises because most of us see it as an opportunity. Yeah, many think that gambling is a solution to poverty. I don't say it is bad, but of course, it should be closed and monitored as well. And they don't have the right to blame casinos for doing business because it is up to the gambler to make themselves responsible. If people see gambling as an opportunity, casino owners see the same.

And this is not just talking about physical casinos because online casinos are spreading anywhere as well. Whatever happened in Africa, it was not surprising anymore. It can happen to other countries as well.

Gambling can only be a fun if you consider it to be a fun for you, that is before we gamble we should already have it in mind what and why we are gambling so if you have it in mind that you are gambling for fun then it will be so for you and if you are gambling to make profit or gain it will also be so for you so everything starts from the mind. Whether low class, middle class etc should not be a factor in gambling as long as they can control the way they gamble.

From this NEWS there is an online gambling pandemic in South Africa and it is as bad as you can imagine.

Due to this raging pandemic South Africans are calling for better regulations to online gambling, South Africans are complaining of being addicted to online gambling and it is affecting them.

I humbly submit that this can be attributed to the cultural and environment of South Africans having less access to job opportunities and financial income.

If a certain country has less opportunities for their citizens to earn income, then they have the potential to resort to violence, gambling, and other related activities. Do I blame these people that they resorted to these activities? Somehow yes given that they always have the choice to do the right and better thing. However, blaming them solely when the government officials and politicians are corrupt should at least be considered on their part.

Quote
While the South African government looks into regulations they should also touch on players gambling responsibly and importantly no under age gambling.

Regulation should always be proceeded and observed if a certain activity tends to bring adverse effects to its citizens. If the government fails to act upon these measures, then this can snowball quickly into a bigger problem which goes beyond gambling as a whole.

I am very sorry for this, when someone falls into addiction whatever it is, i am deeply sorry for this.
I would like people to be free to do what they want, but they must understand that freedom involves commitment and involves being responsible.

Although a well-regulated gambling market could provide some protection against these problems, it still won't be enough to fully control what those gamblers do [unfortunately, sooner or later, some of these gamblers with poor self-control will look for workarounds].

Based on my research, Souther Africa has a public-private foundation called the South African Responsible Gambling Foundation (SARGF) and a National Responsible Gambling Programme, through the office of the government and national gambling regulation, they sponsored free treatment and counselling, a confidential 24/7 helpline (toll-free) and free clinical treatment for all problem gambling patients in that country.

There are also news like the ones below;

National Gambling Board warns against gambling as a financial solution

South Africa forms task team to tackle youth problem gambling

Despite all that is being done by the government and gambling regulation, every individual is still bent on gambling because they want to make extra income, looks like the main cause of the problem in stinging poverty. But one thing rings in my head, you can take away poverty from a man but you can not take away his decision to continue gambling.

We have discussed several solutions to problem gambling here on the forum, and I made the point that an addicted gambler will never change unless they decide to change themselves. You can provide all the support, restrictions, and solutions available, but if the person isn't willing to take that first step, even the best interventions will not work on them. You can help someone find a way out of gambling addiction, but you cannot make that decision for the person.

During the pandemic, online casinos became a trending and opportunity for people due to people had no other source of income during these times because all establishment
businesses were closed.

And even after the pandemic ended, online casinos continued and were even regulated in other countries, which has become even more rampant due to our government itself
is the promoter and many of our people here ruined their lives due to of the addiction they've made it, so what an interviewee said about the gambling addiction he experienced is also correct.

This is very sad of a woman who happens to be a mother to come out publicly and cry out of frustration because she is addicted to gambling, what example is she showing the children who ought to learn from her and she would have cautioned them to stay away from gambling because it ruins people's lives who are too emotional and couldn't control their betting activities, what matters in gambling is self control nor necessary the profits we make.

The South Africa government needs to regulate how gambling activities are carried out in the country in other to minimize the rate of addiction in gambling, though it's not everything that the government will do for us. Every individual needs to take responsibility and be mindful of how they bet and stop chasing looses because that's what leads many to become addicted. We should see gambling as fun and entertainment not where we will get rich and bet with what we can afford to loose and responsibly.
