State Police Bill, 24 out of 36 state's assembly passes bill.

There has been a constitution alteration bill going on in recent times aimed at altering the 1999 constitution to create a dual or two tier police including a federal police and state police of the 36 states. Many has kicked against it while others have supported the motion.

The need for this state police came as a result of insecurity in the country and now TVC news] has it that 24 states out of 36 states house of assembly has approved the creation of the state police.

Though this bill has been receiving good energy because of insecurity, in the list of states that has given approval, Borno has not accented to it neither has Ebonyi state known for continued communal clashes.

With 24 states it's now at 2/3 which the presidency needs to proceed with the bill and probably sign into law. There are many benefits but my fear is simple;

—Is this period the best time to sign this bill especially as the election is fast approaching: won't it be used as a campaign tool or to rig elections?
— Will our politicians hijack this police for political thuggery at the end?
—How effective can this cub insecurity in Nigeria?

This would have been a welcome development, but your area of fear is what also fears me before considering what turn to be our politics in Nigeria, the leaders using all possible means to achieve their aim it will no longer serve the purpose to which this state police is been created for but political gain where who is in PowerPoint have highest control of the force, but primarily police is meant to be those that know the environment for instance many challenges in Nigeria police is a result of how they shift workers if your from Kano policing in ABA it's hard for you to know all roots and hear the language easily where certain issue could be swift into action mastering environment help in solving some insecurities, that is the reason many commit crime and run to some remote village but if the security architecture is within the environment those having that plot or mindset knows there is no hiding places because they are already known by every including the security.

Federal or state police – any of them can be used to rig elections. This is not something to even debate on its basis in those officials and their heads that will be allowed to be used.

I see more of this bill which is being sighed to be more political let it be as if the government is working and have security of the people at hand but in reality we all know what it’s like.

This is not the solution to our problem. Whether state or federal police, they will still be incompetent if there is no proper oversight and leadership. It might even be worse when the power is given at the state level. We can see how state governors, senators, and House of reps members are all useless. Even the House of Assembly members are all useless. None of them is doing their job. They all care about themselves and their party alone. Even with the federal police, if they want to actually fight insecurity, they will. It's not as difficult as they make it seem. Simply train the police officers properly, give them good equipment, and advance technology, and they will easily reduce insecurity if there is proper oversight and they answer to people.

The bosses of the police force are not under pressure from anybody. So if the police on the ground misbehave, they don't feel any pressure. The politicians are supposed to put the security agencies under pressure to always deliver, while the people are supposed to put pressure on the politicians to deliver. It's a circular system. Nobody should be relaxed.

I think the question we should ask them is that, will the insecurity stop after implementing it?, actually if my opinion were to be counted I would have definitely kicked against it because is a complete waste of resources for the country, right from day one of the country we have not seen police as people who usually fight insecurity in the country, so actually if the ones we have cannot do their jobs properly is it the new ones that could be reliable, already all the arm forces in the country are doing there recruitment if I'm not mistaken so what they should have done is increasing the number of people they're recruiting.

Off course each state governors might want to use their police to conduct some form of crime, expect they established a new type of constitution where the police will have a bit of sovereignty by themselves, so that they won't be easily manipulated by the governor's. The  benefit of it is how it's going to help in our country insecurity issues. We have seen our the Federal police had become kind of useless in their jobs in tackling almost 40% of our security challenges. State police could improve this situation because officers (especially the indigenes who knows the in and out of their State) would be closer to the communities they serve and understand the local security problems better. Another concern is the funding? Who will be the one to fund them, is the state government or the Federal government. Because I know that with level of revenues each stated generate they won't be able to fund their state police (except Lagos ). State with low IGR who depends of FAAC allocations can't maintain their own security. Only way, is if Federal government handles 60-70% of each state police department and the governor's contribute 30-40% funding.

Your area of concern is worth considering but we don't have that time anymore considering the rate in which insecurity is rising. Those area you mention was why Nigerians didn't support the bill when it was first raised by some prominent Nigerians but who  cares about those reasons now when we can't sleep at our homes with our two eyes closed?

We need state policing since the federal government has decided to play politics and gamble with the lives of Nigerians. We can easily hold our states governors accountable if they abuse their powers. In the area of funds, any States that can't afford the cost of paying salaries and maintenance can look for alternatives to secure their States. It's time we stop depending on the federal government for security otherwise even government houses won't be a safe haven anymore for our leaders.

Federal police has been accused severally of aiding in election malpractices and election rigging and this is the country we find ourselves. But one thing I have also noticed over the years is that these police rigging is mostly only effective during the federal elections that's presidential elections where they rig for their masters. I don't know if I'm only assuming but I don't think that the federal police influence state elections as they do to the presidential elections.

Having a state police will be the worst of it because the recruitment process will only capture people who support the ruling parties or the leadership will be decided based on who supports the leader.

There's something similar to this state police almost I'm every state of the country with different names and they have been fully active too.why is the insecurity still persisting? This state police for me is still going to face bad financing that could fuel extreme corruption too, even beyond the corruption we see today in the Federal Police.

Personally I think the state police will so much help us tackle this insecurity in each state if eventually it gets signed into the law regardless of whether it’s signed now or after election. My own concern is how it’s been handled because already we see how politicians, celebrities and other rich people in the country use police officers as personal security. So with this already happening, what then do we think will happen when governors now have more direct control over their own state police?
It’s not saying that I am against this but we should be realistic about how this work in this country. If proper accountability is not taken, this governors will use the police to intimidate a lot of people instead of serving the people. There has to be a clear rule that will prevent abuse and ensure that the police must be held responsible for  their action because if not, this is just as easy as giving those powerful ones another way to control people.
