In fact many have lost their bitcoins from exchanges to hackers and many have lost their holdings to wallet seed phrases. Maybe these are discussed on our local board but currently it appears that a woman in Guelph lost $140,000 to a crypto currency scam via text message. The bottom line is that Guelph Women told the police that the scam started a few months ago and that she had received a text message from the wrong number and that the woman had exchanged texts with the man. who convinced him to open an account and invest in various Cryptocurrency agencies and she invested accordingly and this woman believed that his balance had increased but when she went to withdraw she was informed that he would have to pay a hefty fee.
So it is clear that no one in our Naija board should invest despite receiving any tempting offers from strangers Because they keep falling into such traps to grab wealth, many inexperienced people lose their money to hackers. https://x.com/MercuryTribune/status/2113673870716584166Guelph woman loses $140K in cryptocurrency scam that started with wrong number ; https://www.guelphtoday.com/police/guelph-woman-loses-140k-in-cryptocurrency-scam-that-started-with-wrong-number-12929508

When I saw Crypto-currency scam through text I thought the victim was sent a phishing link through text which she clicked but the fact that someone convinced her to invest into something over text makes her an easy target, she should question her ability to survive in any financial space.

How will someone you don't know text you about investment opportunities in cryptocurrency, and how can you trust such a person and invest through them? This is what a lack of information costs us: the moment we don't know basic safety rules for Bitcoin or any form of crypto, we are likely to get scammed because they'll exploit our ignorance about what we need.

This is one of the biggest mistakes people always make, why will you trust someone you don’t know simply because they promise you huge profits from crypto investment. A stranger that you don’t know is not suppose to earn your trust simply because they want to make you rich. Before you invest your money In anywhere you need to understand what you’re investing in and also know the risks involved. That’s why education is very essential, imagine when you don’t have knowledge of how bitcoin works scammers can easily make use of that opportunity. The best thing is to learn first, verify everything and don’t allow greed to over take you.

I actually find it funny when people say text message scam doesn't work anymore when we see it happening around us everyday, it wasn't always about crypto but the smarter people get the more complex strategies these scammers are employing in order to outsmart them. Also one of the reasons why we don't hear about this as much as it happens is probably because victims keep it to themselves because after the scam the whole scheme might end up appearing obvious and people don't want to appear likes fools to their friends and family, we usually hear about it when the scammers get outsmarted.

One of the lessons on cyber security is how scammers come up with various ways to target the psychology of the individual into believing their stories and I think instead of us shifting blame or looking for whom to blame, we should try to make cyber security a more taught subject as we teach about crypto currency based investment or other investment opportunities that arise. If we understand that any business opportunities could be a potential scam, we would see and examine every text message or call or email as a potential selling point and we would learn to set our devices in a way that it refuses access to unknown people or tag them as spam so as we be very alert and careful when they start selling off their ideas to us. Anything is possible these days because people need money, so it is true we only mostly hear about scammers when we outsmart them, but we should also try to be more comfortable sharing new updates we get from suspicious sources to those close or mostly on this forum where no one knows us that much to judge us. That's how we protect ourselves and our little money from being stolen before we talk about how to increase it.

At first, you receiving a text message means that the perpetrators are around you, they are in her cycle and possibly it is someone that knows her kind of person that did such act against her. That is how they organise themselves and decieve people they know too well about their kind of person. It is unfortunate that she lost such an amount of money, she probably does not have idea how scammers operates in the space otherwise she wouldn't fallen for such scam.

The news might be new but the kind of related trick about how the woman lost her funds to the scammers is an old scheme but it is still necessary to speculate the information because I believe if this Guelph woman had been aware and put efforts to stay sensitive towards that, alike, she would not had fallen into such victim. The case of the woman and the man must be involving online or distance dating where the woman was easy to be convinced to invest or put her money there she lost it. The digital world is so much unsafe that you can either lost your funds through hacks or scam. Several people had fallen relatively victims due to their vulnerability to trust strangers or being convinced with some cool looking means of getting rich overnight. Investing on third parties account had also been a high risk because, you won't have access to your funds. I said this because, some third parties asks beginners or relatives who are not exposed to crypto and feels lazy to run the affairs to trust in them.

Text messages are a very unconventional way to perpetuate a cryptocurrency scam. There is rarely any cryptocurrency exchanger or service that operates via text, cell phone number or it’s likes. Being contacted through such means should immediately raise an alarm, let alone to proceed responding to such text.
Then you wonder, just how would someone convince you well enough to invest over $140k into a project, someone you don’t know, someone you’ve never met and in an industry with no securities. It’s just crazy but, it’s a pathway to learn. She chose to learn the hard way, let’s hope she does.

When the offer looks too good to be true, it usually is that's the one phrase that can help you think straight when your village people want make you lose money to scammers. Why on earth will anyone believe random messages being sent to you when you aren't in any positions to be getting such an offer abi na the greediness of people they make them become easy targets to scammers because eh if you aren't greedy and have scamming mindsets yourself, why will you rush into such offers that looks like the people offering it are the ones losing and you'll be profiting. No be thief you be yourself like this so? When I hear stories like I tell myself nobody should be in this kind of situation to lose your hard earned money so protecting ourselves from all this scammers is just what we have to do and to achieve that is by first, being self aware, informed and stay guided.

I do not know the reason some people just like to believe in strangers. Someone they do not know but giving them investment advice and where they can invest. Sorry for the loss for the woman, but it is not good to be stupid. many have lost their holdings to wallet seed phrases.
What did you mean by this? I guess you want to post that many have lost their bitcoin or crypto holdings to hackers and not seed phrase.

The woman was less careful with her money and she was probably more interested in earning more money quickly which is why she did not think about the negative aspects and did as the scammer told her to do and as a result she lost a large amount of money. My point is that when someone gives me such an offer that mentions that my profit will be very high then we should always avoid those messages because someone will not intentionally offer me to earn more money easily by sending me messages unless they are dishonest. My Telegram account has received such messages several times and asked me to open an account in different places. I have always ignored those messages because I know they are scammers and in any way they will try to cheat me and take money from me.

Thanks you a lot for this information. This happens a lot in Nigeria too but people do not talked about it. The story of the woman in Guelph is a common scam. The scammer will text you by mistake, become your friend and tell you about crypto investments, they will show you fake profit on a website. When you want to withdraw your money they will ask you to pay more money. That is how people lose everything, it has happened to one of my friend. This information will help the newbie’s. No stranger on WhatsApp or text message will help you make free money, if anyone asks you to bring money or click a link to invest, it is a scam. Keep your seed phrase safe, do not click strange links.

Yea I also noticed the switch in the use of the pronoun, however the message he’s trying to to deliver here isn’t new. but it should also be a reminder, this is not any different from the Roman scams that try to build trust and eventually lure the victim into investing on scam site or crypto currencies. I don’t want to sound rude here but falling for this kind of cheap scam is foolish to me.

I have always believed that we as humans are practically our own biggest vulnerability. It's worrying to see that despite how unintelligent some scams can be, there's always someone who falls for them. Most people just lack the ability to question certain offers, even when the signs of a scam are obvious. The fact that people want to make money at all cost from unrealistic offers makes you want to question their overall financial intelligence. And as for the woman who lost such an amount to such a weird scam... Well, don't be surprised that a few Nigerians can do worse than that. We've seen several Ponzi schemes using one specific strategies, but still finding new victims. Of course, I'm not disputing the the fact that people can't make mistakes, but again, I honestly don't think it's even smart to listen to investment advice from a total stranger.

This woman from the city of Guelph, Canada, lost such a large amount of money after falling victim to a strange scam, so this is a warning to our inexperienced local board members not to jump into action without doing some analysis. Even if they receive an offer of double money through a stranger or a fake website. It really surprised us that this woman contacted a stranger via text message and fell into the scammer's trap and agreed to open accounts with various crypto currency agencies and start investing.
First of all this woman was greedy because she agreed to open an account and invest without doing any analysis in the hope of getting more money through a stranger and it seems that she was too stupid to realize such a scam which resulted in her losing 140k dollars in a cryptocurrency scam that started with a wrong number. There have been a lot of CEX hacks this year, hardware wallets have also been hacked, and fraudsters are grabbing a lot of crypto through other fraudulent means, therefore it's seems to me everyone should be aware and keep crypto assets safe.

I don't know what to say about this case, and at the same time, I don't want to say that all situations are as a result of being greedy. I just don’t understand how anyone get a message from a total stranger they don't even know and start talking with that stranger, and then end up trusting them to invest such a huge amount of money in a platform you didn’t try to verify.
It’s just the level of blind trust she had for the stranger that’s amazing me. This is someone that you haven't met, whose background you know nothing about, and whose identity you can’t even identify but still yet you end up trusting them. Even though the person sounds very convincing to you and the investment appears legitimate, why not do your own research before investing?
I don’t know if I should say she deserves to be scammed, but at end I understand that these scammers can be very manipulative, but we need to be careful about the people we trust. So I don’t want to really conclude that this case was about greed, most times it has to do with trusting people blindly that you didn’t even try to verify what this person is telling you.

I don't think it was because she was misformed probably she must have heard of scams and ways to prevent being scammed. she was too desperate to multiply her wealth in a short time which was likely why she fell victim. They could be others who may have fallen victim to such scam and couldn't speak out because of criticism. That people might blame them for being foolish,no body is above making mistakes. I blame that woman for this one, she was too much in a hurry to trust the stranger. if she had done a deligent research, maybe she wouldn't have been a victim.
