Thanks to Visual Capitalist, there are some interesting statistics. I was surprised to see Norway so high on the list. Sweden, for example, is very far from it on the list, although geographically they are close. I also didn't know that the British visit online casinos so often. But South Korea, which is often known for its love of risk in trading, ended up at the very bottom of the list. What do you think? Did you expect to see your country ranked where it is? https://www.talkimg.com/images/2026/10/27/a21Sbb.jpgI'm absolutely sure this data isn't accurate. VPNs are so common now that Norway could just be the location with the best ping. also the 16 years thing, what is that supposed to mean

I'm definitely surprised by the top 5, especially seeing countries like Norway in there because they always seem like quite a responsible nation. It would really help if you linked to the original reference page rather than just the twitter account, because they seem to be posting a lot of fresh infographics all the time. I wondered what the source of this was - maybe some ISP analysis or more likely self reported? If it was self reported then maybe that just shows cultural differences, whether that is honesty or maybe gambling is more acceptable in certain societies so people have less problem admitting it. It would be good to understand if this was unbiased and factual. There's different definitions of gambling as well and certain countries might ban sports betting but allow the lottery, which can impact the results as well.

I was also surprised to see Norway so high up. And then the USA – I’m surprised to see it so low down; surely there isn’t a mistake there? Or perhaps it’s down to gambling restrictions in some states.
USA has stricter regulation and restriction so not all site can actually provide service to the US customers. Yeah there are sweepstake casino to bypass the regulations but its US we are talking about, they can easily find a physical casino on their country compared to country like South Africa so the percentage are on the lower side for online casino Aside from that according to Worldometers, South Africa has 65.4 million of people while USA has 349 million so in terms of actual number of people, USA is still ahead of South Africa Obviously the number gonna dwindle down because number of people that have access to internet on South Africa compared to US are different as well I was surprised about the position of the U.S too, because if am correct isn't that where Las Vegas is located? Or am I dreaming? If their regulations are stricter, that means that other countries most especially south Africa that tops the list, should learn to copy their control tactics to reduce gambling activities and addiction inorder to be better and have a good working and wealthy economy than is right now. This graph really tells alot and it has really changed my view in how I have always perceived some countries that seem to be holier in my eyes.

A very strange looking statistics. First thing that I have noticed it was stated "Internet users aged 16+". Since when gambling is from 16+ ? Is this a visualization of illegal gambling market? That makes me doubt that statistics is correct and true. Second thing that made me doubt in data are true is how they managed to category gamblers by country. VPN users spoil all the true data. Third reason, knowing how huge gambling market is in US, it is hard to believe they are so low in rating (and for example Greece be so high, as Greece population is +30 times less than in US).
Yes, you really have a good observation about the data that O.P just published above. Because I was also wondering how they were able to get the exact data of people who use a gambling site in each country without presenting the complete total number of users who use gambling site from each of those months, and then dividing the actual number from those who are above 16yrs+, because despite the fact that the legal age for gambling in some country is 16yrs+, for others like Nigeria is 18yrs+. And also coupled with those users who use VPN might have bypass whichever protocol that they might have aquire their data, because i'm the only means through which I guess they might have gotten those data is through Google Gmails, because since Gmail is always used in registering on casinos, they went forword to use the age on those Gmails to compile this record.

But South Korea, which is often known for its love of risk in trading, ended up at the very bottom of the list. What do you think? Did you expect to see your country ranked where it is? I think Nigeria should be way above where they are in the ranking based on the percentage of Nigerians that are into gambling, if you independently check the statistics of the online casinos you will notice that a very high percentage of Nigeria's population are online casino users. Could be it is as a result of the economy, this may be a factor that is luring many into gambling. Where Nigeria is rated right now isn’t surprising at all and if they should go above the percentage they are right now, I’ll still not be surprised because the rate of gambling in Nigeria is on a very high side and I’ll also say the economy is part of it. The rate of inflation in Nigeria is so high that even the common man finds it hard to survive and he thinks the easiest way to source for his daily bread when there is no good source of income is through gambling and the rate keep increasing everyday. At this point, there are so many that can’t do without it anymore and I believe if the economy was better, gambling wouldn’t have been an option for so many.

Visual Capitalist, its business is to gather data. We may not believe what their data says, but it is what it is because they conducted a study and have parameters explaining why a certain country landed in that position. I considered my country's position as correct, just surprised that we are above the United States. Like all the others, I'm also surprised by Norway's and South Korea's position, perception, and facts are indeed two totally different things.

the rankings are interesting, but website visits don’t necessarily equal active gamblers. i’d be curious to see how the data was collected and whether it includes sports betting apps too. even platforms like vega are part of a much broader online betting landscape.

I was wondering how they come up with this ,but at the same it could be from a genuine source also ,I'm not surprised with my country Nigeria ranking so high , everyone enjoy comfort , gambling has been made easy for everyone,at the comfort of your home you can gamble as much as you want without been seem ,since I started gambling I have not been to a walkin shop to gamble but that doesn't mean I don't bet whenever I want ,the rate at which Nigeria gambles is on the high side so I won't be surprised if they still go above their current position, online casino has really taken over , comfort over everything, online just made it easy for many .

I was surprised to see the statistics of my country. Because I thought that maybe even if it is not at the top, it will be in the 4th place. Because in the place where I live, almost everyone is involved in gambling, especially among women, gambling has spread a lot. So I thought that my country could be in the 4th place. But maybe the area where I live has a higher number of gamblers or all the people I know are gamblers.
But yes, I don't know where you did this survey. But I was quite surprised to see the number of Norway

What about those that are using VPN? Like that Norway servers that are so popular with free VPNs? I don't believe that this data is genuine enough, many online casinos are still accepting VPN connections and they are still able to withdraw just like those who aren't using VPN connection to gamble.
Interest also doesn't mean conviction, someone can download the app and gamble one time and that's it, they will never come back and get the data used will add it up as one of the online casino gambler.

Yeah, the countries that are having a bad economy have citizens who are more susceptible in becoming addicted to gambling and South Africa is right now the proof of it. I've seen a thread here before that has a topic tackling about south africa gambling problem and to be honest it is quite alarming since experts are considering it as a pandemic in their country. I've heard that their government is aware of their citizens becoming addicted to gambling and it they consider it as a big problem. They had a counseling and treatment services for addicted gamblers but I think it is not enough. They need to step up and impose tighter regulation or, at most, ban all those casinos to lessen the citizen addiction, of course this can backfire to them as they can lose some tax revenue but if they are treating it as a pandemic, they need to take the negative blow of their actions. To be honest, I think our country has the worst gambling problems but after seeing our country in the lower middle, it shows that other countries have more serious problems related to gambling. Maybe I've seen so many horror stories about gambling on our local media that's why I think it is really bad on our country but yeah other countries had it worse.

Why is united kingdom not on the first list, they are the highest gamblers I know do far, many of the gambling ads all on the billboard on various football match field in UK, the teenagers there are high core gamblers who bet desperately. But what makes South Africa the top on the list, I am just thinking but can't figure out why, can anyone tell?

Let me say that out of 10 Albanians 9 are avid gamblers despite the government trying to shut it down with force in 2019. I am extremely surprised to not see Albania or most Balkan countries in the top of the list as almost all Balkan countries I know are avid gambling lovers so it is impossible for most of them not to gamble. When I go for vacation to Montenegro for example as soon as I pass the border the first village funny enough has a bakery, pharmacy and casino same as in Albania before. This lists needs to be updated for sure.

That is based on that survey, could be different with another survey as they have different references. But mind you, this is not about how much they gamble as obviously the UK gambles more in terms of money, this survey is based on people who were interviewed. And comparing the UK and South Africa, the latter is a country with more economic problems and you know when people are struggling they tend to rely on gambling hoping to earn some money.

I expected Nigeria to be a little higher. You may not believe it, but I have observed that most of the youth in our society who have smart phones are addicted to betting. And everyone has spent money on gambling any of time within his age . And it is increasing day by day. I think it will become difficult to control the youth in the future. Because the way they start betting uncontrollably, their mental state will also deteriorate and there will be additional pressure on the family. It is very difficult to control the emotions of young people. Parents have to consciously keep their children away from being addicted to betting. Most of the people in our country work very hard to meet the needs of daily life, so if the rate of betting among young people in our society increases so much, it will be very harmful for everyone in the society in the future.

I would've said that Spain would be higher in the list to be honest, but then you look at the data, global average and how above we are from there, and everything makes sense, because the absence in the list of multiple countries at and below the average seems to distort the initial perception. What has not surprised me so much has been to see several Latin American countries above us in the ranking.

If the data is collected from the user level and not IP address level then the VPN presence to wrongly project the data will be removed. But still gambling is something of a worldwide phenomena, I would not call it a problem for everyone but for few people.
Now when it comes to age, I consider not even 18+ but a person who actually understands how gambling works to gamble and those who are dunces are never to be exposed to gambling directly without a supervisor. Because the latter will end up wasting their money.
Just crossing the age barrier is never enough, mentally quite a few people of that age are still in the 14year old group.

From this statistics it clearly shows that Nigeria is not bad enough when it comes to online gambling and addictions compared to other countries that is above us. Some of the causes of excessive gambling in some countries is as a result to no jobs and employment by the government so the Youths are likely going to gamble to survive because it's one of the easiest way of making money once you can be able to predict and analyze your games properly so you can win even though winning is not guaranteed. I expected Nigeria to be topping this statistics chart but I'm just surprised they weren't because the level at which Youths are being seen in gambling halls and the use of smart phones on gambling sites is too much and comparing the hardship now in the country it's just too surprising for me. I'm sure if another survey comes up we might be at the top or second on the table but nevertheless people should try to control their betting activities.

~ What do you think? Did you expect to see your country ranked where it is?
I'm surprised by these numbers, to be honest. 7.8% worldwide? It can't be. I think at least 20% of people aged 16+ gamble regularly worldwide. And I'd multiply all numbers in the chart by 3 to see a picture that I expect. But I'm inclined to think that I was wrong, that the chart created by Visual Capitalist is representing the reality, that actually less people gamble than I thought. Btw, my country is not in the list. From what I can see around me, the number should be at least around 10%, which would place Ukraine near Czechia and Italy, but that's my personal view of things. Of course, if Visual Capitalist created the chart based on real research, their results are closer to reality.

Should not countries with larger population be at least on top of this list? Norway population is 5.5 millions only. US population is 342 millions. US gambling 2023 statistics say that half of population participated in any form of gambling during a year. I dont think that within 3 years numbers have changed that much. With growth of popularity of gambling they became even greater. However Norway somehow managed to surpass US by number of users who gamble? No, I don't think so, a country could have high population with gambling citizens that focus more in gambling on their local casino in the country, while another country with low population could have more citizens that focus in several online casino instead of using their local/ traditional casinos and so in this survey is only showing the country that used online casino more, not country that gambles more or have the largest number of gamblers that uses both online and offline casinos. If this survey covered all types of gambling, including offline gambling, online gambling, and crypto casinos, the results would be different from what we are seeing here, especially in terms of which country has the most gamblers. I think you dont get my point. Country with population of hundred millions can not have less gamblers than a country that has 62 times less population. It does not matter either if they gamble in casino or just buy a lottery ticket. Think about cult of buying lottery tickets in US. US even have whole city that exist only thanks to gambling. Number of sports events, how gambling industry sponsor sport. And with that information I have to trust statistic that say Norway makes more unique visits online gambling? I would never have though that there are so many gambling lovers in Norway.
