This is still held until tomorrow, we do have village league every christmas, every community is represented and they have to bring a certain amount to participate, prizes are spiced up from funding from known wealthy people who like football. It is always first, second and third positions that are rewarded. The christmas celebration is not complete without the tournaments.

For fun, I now do local sports betting, but in return, the one who loses gives me a treat or sponsors a tour. These bets are mostly made with friends. I have never played in this exact type of game or match before but I do get or understand the feeling because back in the day as well, there used to be this local card game called "whot whot", those from Nigeria will know this card game I am talking about.
We used to organize a mini tournament playing this game, what we normally do is contribute money and form a five man group of four or five or even more (depending on the number of people who showed interest to participate in the game by contributing money).

The total money realized from the contribution is the prize and out of five or six or more groups, only one group can win it, it used to be super fun, sometimes a tournament could last for a whole one week depending on the number of groups participating in the game.. how i missed this good old days..

Yes, I have gotten involved in such local bet on numerous occasions, but it is mostly on football. You have a point but I don't think the pandemic or lockdown is what made online gambling more popular, the influence of online casinos has been growing due to ads and also for the fact that people want something that is easily accessible to them, betting online for a lot of people is more convenient compared to using local casinos.
