the cryptocurrency industry has experienced very significant growth over the past decade thousands of blockhain projects have emerged each introducing new projects, tokens and the promise of innovation. but the question is what makes the blochain project worthwhile in the long run ?
The value of Bitcoin and crypto in general can be summed up in two words:
regulatory arbitrageBitcoin was created for one reason: digital currencies were illegal when Bitcoin was originally launched. As such, Bitcoin's architecture (PoW blockchain) was necessary, and the PoW feature in particular made a distributed system actually work at scale.
Today, digital currencies are perfectly legal, and thus there is no longer a
technical need for Bitcoin's architecture.
However, in the actual reality of today's regulatory environment, anything called "decentralized" is scrutinized, from a regulatory perspective, completely differently and is allowed to exist under a significantly reduced set of regulations (although this gap is narrowing every day).
However, at the present time, Bitcoin and any product with a "decentralized" architecture is far less regulated, and because of that it can compete effectively with established products who are forced to abide by traditional regulations.
That's what makes Bitcoin and blockchain in general valuable, at least from a technical perspective.
As to Bitcoin specifically, and its market cap, the answer is that
Bitcoin is a meme investment. As a meme, Bitcoin is valuable because of the name, "Bitcoin", which has a lot of brand recognition. (And note how BTC has dropped in the last few days just because there has been negative news about the crypto sector generally, even though this has no direct effect on Bitcoin itself).
