While most discussions in the altcoin market focus on price movements, token launches, and the next potential rally, stablecoins seem to be gaining traction for something more practical: payments.

According to Allium's September 2026 report, stablecoin payments reached at least $401 billion during the first eight months of 2026, representing growth of at least 42% compared to the previous year.

The report also found that businesses accounted for roughly 58% to 64% of stablecoin payments. These transactions include supplier payments, payroll, and other business-related activities.

Source: Allium – State of Stablecoins and Payments, September 2026 https://www.allium.so/reports/state-of-stablecoins-and-payments-september-2026

What caught my attention is that much of this activity isn't coming from people buying tokens and waiting for their prices to increase. Businesses are actually using stablecoins to move money.

Of course, stablecoins aren't perfect. They still depend on their issuers, reserves, and the networks they operate on. Also, growing stablecoin usage doesn't automatically mean the native tokens of those networks will increase in value.

Personally, I think this is an important distinction. A blockchain can attract real users and transaction volume without necessarily delivering the same benefits to its token holders.

We've spent years discussing which altcoins could become widely adopted, but perhaps we should also look at which crypto applications people are already using without expecting investment returns.

Do you think stablecoins are becoming crypto's strongest real-world use case, or are there other altcoin applications that offer more practical value?

Do you think stablecoins are becoming crypto's strongest real-world use case, or are there other altcoin applications that offer more practical value?

Governments are more interested in stablecoins because they are something they can control, and they also avoid the issues with high volatility seen in assets like Bitcoin; every day, I see news stories about stablecoins and governments.

Canada opens consultation on stablecoins, citing US GENIUS Act

Malaysia, Thailand join Singapore’s cross-border stablecoin push

Shinhan, SBI make Japan-Korea tourist spending a test case for yen stablecoins

These three news items are from October 2026. It is becoming increasingly clear that governments have a much greater interest in stablecoins than in Bitcoin or other altcoins at least when it comes to their use as a means of payment. Furthermore, I highly doubt that most people would want to use Bitcoin for payments; the reality is that Bitcoin and altcoins have already carved out a role as a store of value.

People aren’t going to spend one Bitcoin currently worth $77,000 to buy a car, knowing that in three years that same car might be worthless due to an accident, or simply because its value has dropped following the release of a better model. Instead, they can choose to "HODL" that Bitcoin, which might be worth $150,000 or more three years down the line. Consequently, there is a clear space for stablecoins to serve as a payment method, which is precisely why governments are more interested in them.

look:

source: https://coinmarketcap.com/

USDT and USDC are growing very rapidly. This demonstrates that people place a great deal of trust in stablecoins during times of crisis, using them as a hedge against losses when Bitcoin and altcoins experience sharp declines. However, that is not the only reason; in my country, it is possible to withdraw funds from Binance, but one must use a stablecoin USDT. This goes to show that stablecoins are more reliable for real-world payments.

No, i don't. The main purpose of creation from the stable coin is maintain the stability that were lacking on crypto in the past. Traders had volatile problem to book their profit, then vendors like Circle and Tether saw it as opportunities. Meanwhile, all of its additional usecases are coming from its form in ERC20 token.

The only usecase of stablecoin is for the transactional purpose and compare it to the token such as BNB which has so many practical use is the same like comparing apple and orange because both are different and they provide different usage for crypto users.

It's just my perspective but as the stablecoin usage rise, altcoin adoption also increase because those token can't send itself without gas token which is an altcoin like ETH, SOL, BNB, and so on. My opinion is that, at the very least these stablecoin don't predate the altcoin market but instead it predates the bank settlement, credit/debit card market share for remittance and payments. The cryptocurrency which today has evolved to become a tool for investment still left untouched.

If stablecoin could bring user adoption, that simply means the liquidity is one step closer to cryptocurrency market, the stablecoin help acts as a liquidity bridge and people who are holding stablecoin are just one step away from converting their stablecoin to BTC, ETH, or any relevant cryptocurrency which means an opportunity for higher adoption growth and once adoption has reached unprecedented level the economic of cryptocurrency will become stronger and volatility become lesser, when that happens it'll become a strong alternative to stablecoin for remittance and payment.

These companies/businesses deal with individuals just like trading platforms that buy stablecoins to use to support trading activity and some use them to reduce trading risks and due to low fees. So, in short, despite the growth of stablecoins, their growth is linked to the growth of cryptocurrencies.

You have a good point that made me thought about that the number of stablecoins circulating is far from reality because the enormous number of internal transactions within the exchange platforms. You know how many traders are freezing their funds into stablecoins to avoid value loss during the price decline periods. I guess stablecoins pairs within exchange platforms are the most active pairs. Unfortunetly, there is no access to internal information from those platforms but easy yo imagine how big it is. Some users swap to stablecoins many times a day.

We've spent years discussing which altcoins could become widely adopted, but perhaps we should also look at which crypto applications people are already using without expecting investment returns.
That's surely is for the stable coins, no one expects any return in the stable coins unless they're doing it because they feel more protected than their fiat or local currency.

Do you think stablecoins are becoming crypto's strongest real-world use case, or are there other altcoin applications that offer more practical value?
Defining by how strong it is doesn't mean that it's the biggest real use case that we have. Look at how's the value with bitcoin in terms of daily/24 hour volume and that's for the trading activity alone. While for payments, the stable coins are there but even as holding bitcoin is also a real world use case that we've been discussing for years now. As for the alts that define themselves as the best payment method, there's a lot of it that competes into that title.

Yeah, there are also newer chains now that can run stablecoins more cost effectively but I still think they are not that much. Besides, I think what you said there that we will need another alt to send a stablecoin, only applies on a decentralized type of platform or wallet. And what about when the stablecoin is already inside on some platform like an online casino or a crypto exchange for example? We can also withdraw them immediately without the need of another alt but we will only need to pay some fees in order to process or mine our transactions in the chain.

once adoption has reached unprecedented level the economic of cryptocurrency will become stronger and volatility become lesser, when that happens it'll become a strong alternative to stablecoin for remittance and payment.
Lesser volatility will not make bitcoin to be not an investment, right? I mean, for example, even bitcoin's volatility becomes lesser, I will not spend it like I do USDT because USDT got no ROI whereas bitcoin got then why should I keep BTC in my hot wallet.

Stable coins are gaining this attention because political criminals are storing their money in stable coins. What most newbies are scared of about bitcoin, is that idea of it going downward. Many keep asking what if it doesn’t go up again, what happens to their money. But they don’t understand that bitcoin don’t operate that way.

But with stable coins, if they keep 100 units of it, in the next few months or years that it will remain at that 100 units, they don’t care about the inflation. This is one thing that is helping stable coins getting widely adopted. If you pay for goods with stable coin, the business owner is assured that whenever he closes for the day, that the value of the money will remain the same, unlike bitcoin where there are chances of it going down in the next minutes. Those who don’t like bitcoin are using stable coin, people that love bitcoin are also using stable coins. So the growth will be faster.

One thing I think we'll see more of is people using stablecoins without even realizing they're using crypto. If banks and payment apps integrate them into their services, users might only care that transfers are faster or cheaper. That could bring more adoption than expecting everyone to learn how to use crypto wallets.

Stablecoins are being used as a medium with the fiat economy, which is why the market cap of any other altcoin is below that of stablecoins. If the direct use of other cryptos other than stablecoins increases, the stablecoin market will be under pressure. However, since stablecoins are becoming one of the most effective real-world uses in the crypto world, it is not right to think that a cryptocurrency's own token will be a good investment only if it is very useful in reality. Because real use is the strength of a project, but how much that strength is converted into financial benefits for token holders is the real issue for investors.

They can do that because what matters there is the volume of usage and that's where they can get more gains.

And it's not about their capacity but implementing it with the help of the government. There's no doubt that they can make fees cheaper and even for free.

As long as they will enforce it to the masses for the usage of it.

Bank adoption alone doesn't guarantee people will benefit from it.
No guarantees but it gives some incentives for both ends.
