There is no safe place to store money, so where should we store it?
Store it in a non-digital format. Is that practical and free from threats or mistakes? Certainly not.
I think we must bear the consequences of whatever storage method we choose.

Bank hacks happen regularly, but the media doesn't cover them. Bank hacks affect most of a country or its users. But the media doesn't cover them negatively. Bank fraud is nothing new, yet it doesn't cover them in the media. But the media will continue to cover crypto negatively, because this is where the conspiracies of the powerful are hidden.

There are still safe places to keep money. Is everyone affected by hacks? Maybe a small part. So why can't we take the same steps that most users are taking. Have you ever heard of institutions like MicroStrategy or Metaplanet losing funds due to hacks? Maybe you haven't. They were attacked, but they didn't lose funds because of strong security.

There is a big difference between personal funds and institutional funds, and there may even be a difference in security management. But I want to say that if you are good at security, you can also hold your money safely. You can use airgapped funds for personal funds and use multisig wallets to strengthen security. Whatever steps you take for security, you must be skilled at risk management.

What a load of crap—if those banks were hacked and it didn't make the news, how did you even find out?

You have no idea what the difference is between hacking cryptocurrency sent via blockchain and hacking money from a bank.

There are still safe places to keep money. Is everyone affected by hacks? Maybe a small part. So why can't we take the same steps that most users are taking. Stop talking nonsense. If you're going to get paid to write, at least don't get paid to write nonsense. Those companies use custodians to store their Bitcoins; in Strategy's case, they use Coinbase Custody and Fidelity Custody.

There is no safe place to store money, so where should we store it?

Everyone is aware of the platform you mentioned and those incidents. This hacking occurs through small flaws or vulnerabilities that are inadvertently compromised and corrected. However, this aspect is not the topic of discussion; the right place to deposit crypto or funds should be carefully chosen by oneself.

  • Firstly, a credible and trust-based (most credible to individuals) platform should be used.
  • Never keeping all funds in a (hardware, CEX, DEX) wallet.
  • Strongly monitor the security aspect and keep the seed and passphrase safe.

I firmly believe that, this will make it possible for us to feel secure about our funds. Because I have never been able to identify which platform might be hacked. Because now almost every platform is connected with third parties and they have access.

There is no safe place to store money, so where should we store it?

We have a similar discussion that is going on in the Bitcoin board, Were do I store my money.
The X post you are referring could be different from the one I saw too which doesn't mention some of these crypto companies that was listed but the subject is same as where is the safest place to store our coins since all the trusted source are getting hacked.
Some of these companies got hacked but not all of them was hacked, however, I do not really support storing your coins on centralized exchange, we should use a secured self custody wallet from a trusted company.

Now is the time when AI is becoming a powerful motivator for people who think that storing their funds on the stock exchange is a safe action or that nothing bad will happen to them. We should not stop and settle down on the knowledge that we have. There are even more "interesting" hacks ahead, which can be prevented and avoided by people who monitor all events and monitor the accuracy of their savings.

Clearly there is no 100% secured place to keep your money (cryptocurrency) that is totally safe because recently we have seen quite a lot of platforms that have been hacked, either directly or through their third party providers, even a hardware wallet. Hardware wallets comes highly recommended because they are offline but then Coldcard happened and we were like which storing method is totally safe since online and an offline have been breached.

Clearly the lesser evil is offline, unless their is a breach before a hardware wallet was supplied to you there wouldn't be anything to worry about, hackers can only penetrate through online which makes online to be more vulnerable. So yes offline is the lesser evil and if you can afford a reputable hardware wallet you should go for it, unless you lose access to your Bitcoin through your own ignorance issues of hacks will be not be among your worries.

I've seen several posts like this one on the forum during the last few days. It's the same as asking where should we store our fiat money, since bank accounts are getting hacked and credit/debit card info gets stolen. Spreading FUD about the security of cold wallets, DEXs and CEXs won't solve the problem. The advice, which was given by all experienced crypto users is pretty clear. Stay away from centralized exchanges, keep your coins in a cold wallet and keep your private keys safe. Also be careful about what files you download from the internet, what links do you click and what kind of info you share online. Panicking and acting butthurt every the sh*t hits the fan is a sign of immaturity. Grin

Airgap wallet, electrum installed on an old laptop disconnected to the internet.
These two are the other safe wallets that we can choose right now.
But let me take it, that it has got some risk as well depending on who the owner is.
Because even if you have the safest wallet per se, if you're careless and you allow those threats like clicking an unsolicited link on your email and fell for that, the nonsense of using a safe wallet can be seen with how we use our computers/devices.

It's a bit far fetched as if it becomes unsafe, when it's clear that depositing funds on the CEX is not a safe place. Cold wallets, hardware wallets, even hot wallets as long as they are not connected and do not provide access to any third-party services will be fine. Just because there have been incidents of platform hacking, doesn't mean the entire crypto asset storage ecosystem isn't secure.

Seeing your response I decided to dig dip on the evolution of hacking into crypto assets storage spaces and I found out as years go by the amounts of hack per years gets increasing higher, stats from 10 years ago shows that in 2026-2027, they were a total of 10 to 20 incidents recorded valued between $30M - 150M while from 2025/2026 there are a total of 400+ recorded incidents with 200 of them in just H1 of 2026 valued to about $1.5B - $3B, across different platforms, this show the fragility of cyber security in the crypto environment.

Even with what has happened do you think that such people will start having second thoughts? I don't this they would because the likes of Binance still pay back the lost money, this is their reason for using exchanges to store funds in the first place.

If you can ask one of them right now they would say this same thing that I just wrote, the ability of getting their coins back id anything bad happens is why they will keep using centralised exchanges.

If they did the keeping themselves they would have lost it, trust me I've been there, I know so many people that have this same mindset about self custody and centralised exchanges.

So far, I haven't seen a cold wallet or even a hot wallet that was hacked when there was no mistake or negligence from the wallet holder or a loophole in the wallet.
If your wallet is okay and you don't compromise your device or wallet, I don't think there is a way you can be hacked. I'm yet to see any hack that broke through an address without the seed phrase and stole Bitcoin. It is always through linking your wallet to malicious sites or clicking phishing links that take you to a hacker's site, saving your seed phrase online and many other ways.
I would like to know if there have been any incidents where an address was hacked and the coins stolen without the hacker somehow decieving the owner to give up his address unknowningly.
Which means, so far, holding your bitcoin in your non custodial, open source wallet is the better option as long as you can keep it safe.

I once read a post on X that was quite interesting a few weeks ago, but I forgot not to save the post, so I can't give the reference as a thread that was created, but I remember what it said, with a sentence like this;

Perps was hacked
DeFi was hacked
CEX was hacked
DEX was hacked
Prediction Market was hacked
Hot Wallet was hacked
Cold Wallet was hacked
Hardware Wallet was hacked

There is no safe place to store money, so where should we store it?
There is a safe place. If we all decide to use a complete open source wallets, we can keep our Bitcoin safe because I haven’t heard about decentralized wallet like Electron got hacked recently. They are open source wallets, if you can have your seed phrase saved offline and safe, your Bitcoin will remain in the wallet, as long as your seed phrase is kept safe with you.

However, all these hacks has thought us big lessons, we have learned not to rely on any external device anymore; the hardware wallets we consider safest has got hacked and the exchanges we also rely on got hacked. Even some of us that rely on keeping money in our casino wallets also learned from the hack because we don’t have control of our assets over there.

If you want the most secured way you will have to deal with multisig which many people don't find easy to get used to because it's confusing and complicated, choose wisely.
That's what I thought too, for someone who is not techy enough, doing it might be complicated and could even result in losing Bitcoin if the setup fails. So keeping things simple is what most people would be looking for and I believe the poster above me is correct, using different hardware wallets from different manufacturers will help minimize the risk.
Multisig may be hard to understand but that is because it is also said to bring a tougher security than a normal wallet setup. You can also test small amounts of Bitcoin on your first time of setting up, if in case it fails. Losing them is fine, at least we may still learn than losing our Bitcoins due to hacks. This must be what the saying implies that ''being comfortable is dangerous''. Anyways on the alternative you said there mate, you said it is so easy. Maybe you don't know or forget that hardware wallets are not cheap? And right now, more and more hardware wallets are said to have an issue too.

In essence, the safety of our crypto currency assets is as safe as the user. How the user practices safe keeping determines to a great extent how much safer their asset is, with third party involvement bearing just a little percentage of the blame if we ever get hacked or scammed.

So safety starts with the ultimate sound practices of the users or holders and got less responsibility to do with the hackers who only probe and poke at the vessel to see if content drops in little quantities or rush out like liquid.

Yes, our asset is our responsibility.
Although it's important the wallets we use and what they are - noncustodial / custodial.
If we're not so careful with how we use it and we can easily fall to the shenanigans of these scammers and hackers, it's useless.
So, it's better to be aware, careful and at the same time using the wallets that we trust and non custodial.

There is no safe place to store money, so where should we store it?

I think the key thing here will be to be cautious and very aware of where we keep our cryptocurrencies and all. Just like conventional banks get hacked and funds stolen from personal accounts, it can happen to crypto wallets too but I think there should be some leverage for people using your service s a service provider. If I save my money in the bank and the bank gets rubbed and money carted away, customers don't need to worry much due to the fact that the bank must have been insured and so customers should be safe. This should also be applicable to crypto wallets in the sense that, saving my assets in your wallet should come with some level of security. And so it is up to us to do our due diligence before we entrust our funds in any wallet so that we do not get to be victims of circumstance when the unexpected happens.

A hardware wallet is still the best there is.

Some people have been hacked, but they may have been careless with it. It's best not to connect it to the internet. I think this has been said many times on other boards, and it's one of the best way to keep the security.
Those who claimed they were hacked, I don't think there are many of them. Then, they probably won't admit that they are the ones who made a mistake after they are hacked then it goes viral.

Instead of trusting HW or any platform to store funds why not generate your own seed phrase and add some security layers? Hackers may be able to hack other platforms and hardware wallets but they cannot hack an address whose seed phrase or private key they do not have. The seed phrase should be generated and stored in such a way with some additional security that no one can access or guess it. If you have lost so much trust in crypto then you can buy land and gold to maintain the value of your funds.

The more reason you shouldn't store all your money in just one wallet. If you have one wallet from this brand, the next brand should be different. The same thing goes for non-custodial wallets. One wallet per app/software. Most importantly, don't visit random sites and click any ads. If you can't stop yourself from doing it, it would be better if you had a separate phone mainly for wallets. With all the hacking incidents, what you need to do now is be extra careful.

It has reached the point where crypto currencies should be produced as hard currencies so that we can borrow them underground because if this is caution we have to take just to use them, lol. But even if we store them in different devices, wallets that they want to hack will still he hacked, but we just have to be cautious. With the way this hacks are flowing around especially this year in comparison with prior, I believe something greater is sponsoring this move
