In October 2026, two incidents caught my attention in the crypto community. On October (21–22), BitcoinTalk was temporarily shut down after a serious security vulnerability in (PHP) was disclosed. The administrator decided to update the server and conduct security checks considering the potential risks. Before that, there had been several attack attempts but Cloudflare prevented them. No evidence of a successful hack was found in the subsequent investigation.

On the other hand: Binance faced a major security incident in the same month.

Here comes my question: If BitcoinTalk can make the decision to temporarily shut down in advance considering potential risks, then couldn't major exchanges like Binance also take similar precautionary measures if they detected early signs of security risks?

Of course, the technical situations of the two incidents are not the same and not claiming that the hacking could have been prevented for sure if Binance had been temporarily shut down.

However, one thing is clear that the way hackers are improving their techniques nowadays, the security systems of platforms also need to become faster and more effective. In my opinion, temporarily shutting down operations may create some inconvenience for users but that inconvenience is much better than facing a major security breach.

What do you think? In the case of crypto platforms, should preventive measures be more important than compensation and recovery after a hacking incident?

That of Bitcointalk was a preventative measure, and it really worked. When you dictate threats, you have to find ways to protect your site to ensure its intact and not leaking any important information and subsequent breakdown. When they went temporarily down, it wasn't a problem because we all knew it was for the best. The only was that we missed the forum and the discussions.

That of Binance was a bit of security laxity, or should I say poor security measures. For the fact that so many exchanges have been experiencing hack recently should get everyone ready and push them to improve and tighten there security to avoid such insident. But maybe they didn't, thinking they were fully guided, and then it happened.

However, all this happening should be a warning call to other un hacked or yet to be hacked exchanges or casinos to be security conscious and very alert. It seems like these scammers are getting better in there scamming activities daily, and thus, if it requires them temporarily shutting down to protect there site, then its worth it. It's better they learn from other hacks rather than wait to experience it themselves.

These are clearly two different types of vulnerabilities.

Points to note:
  • Not all vulnerabilities can be detected before an attack occurs
  • Not all sources of vulnerabilities stem from code written by internal developers
  • Not everyone who discovers a vulnerability for the first time is a person with good intentions
  • Not all developers are available 24/7 to secure systems immediately
  • Not all vulnerabilities are natural (i.e., unintentional)  Wink

It's a security incident from php, not from Bitcointalk forum software itself. The forum software was modified by theymos and after three big hacks many years ago, since then Bitcointalk forum was very solid in security.

Results from theymos' investigation and his report to forum community show that the forum software is very good and theymos has his great mind to secure the forum very well.

Set up your account strong password.
Reset your captcha bypass code regularly with time.
Set up a strong password for your email that is used for forum account registration.
Set up 2FA for that email.
Sign a Bitcoin message from Bitcoin wallet and private key you control, stake it in the forum. You can use it for account recovery in the future.

I believe if you can do these things well, your account is secure enough.

Binance was not affected this way. Even if Binance shut down the exchange for awhile, the hack will still occur. Binance platform was not what was under attack, it was Binance hot wallet that was under attack. Hackers do not need to access the exchange to act before draining their wallet. So they attack the wallet directly.

theymos shut down bitcointalk several hours after a vulnerability with PHP was disclosed, and more hours after the same vulnerability was known to the public. It was luck that bitcointalk was (likely) not hacked during this time.

According to early reports, Binance was hacked due to a compromise of a single developer. Precautions can be taken, but ultimately, compromising certain developer computers at any exchnge will result in large losses for that exchange.

The Binance exchange developer was possibly like a senior Bitcoin developer Luke Dashjr whose computer was compromised and his Bitcoin wallet was stolen too. Those developers perhaps did not use their computers for work-only while they did multiple tasks on a same computer so that if a security incident comes, many things from wallets to exchange-related treasury can be exploited by hackers.

Not for exchange developers but for Bitcoin users in general.

I have heard one of the Binance developer computers was compromised, but on the forum there wasn’t something similar. So Binance wasn’t aware of any incident going on. There was some incident on the PHP that the forum admins were aware of; hence, they decided to shut it down and fix it.

Even if any exchange is hacked, other exchanges won’t shut down their service at all. Rather, they would increase the security of their platform. So regarding the incident, we can’t compare it with the forum and exchange. Attackers don’t give warnings before hacking.
