The news that about $2.8bn of stolen funds from the Binance hack was frozen and ultimately returned to Binance came as a relief to meant but it also begs the question "is cryptocurrency not decentralized anymore?" What would happen if a false alarm or a malfunction falsely identifies a random institution's holdings as fraudulent?

I have always thought crypto to be my finances in my hands, free from outside influence, I don't have to cue at a bank or answer to any institution before I get access to my holdings, but it seems that times are changing faster than we can keep up with.

What does this mean for cryptocurrency and it's original vision?

Return to Binance?
Are you sure about that?
That stolen fund was only frozen now and it's not sure what will be applied next, we all have to wait for next actions with such frozen funds.

Hackers in this case are very smart, they use stablecoins as collateral to borrow ETH which can not be frozen on chain. They still have stolen fund in ETH after converting stablecoins to ETH through loans, and stablecoins frozen in liquidity pools are still unknown in a way how they will be treated by governments.

Will DeFi platforms have to pay costs with that and hackers still have funds in ETH?

Sadly stablecoins are still crypto and that is what is affected since they can freeze the funds.. But crypto is a big market, so if you don't want government intervention or outside influence as you call it, then you should not invest in centralized coins, go for the only one which is Bitcoin.

you buy Bitcoin and hold it in your non-custodial wallet, secure your seed phrase, hodl for the long term and you are good to go, you wouldn't have to worry too much anymore regardless of the price fluctuations.

What does this mean for cryptocurrency and it's original vision?
If means you need to study the difference of centralized and decentralized coins.

The news that about $2.8bn of stolen funds from the Binance hack was frozen and ultimately returned to Binance
The news i heard about Binance stolen funds is that, portion of the stolen has been returned..it doesn’t mean that Binance recover everything they have lost for the incident...And the information is yet to be confirmed.....

"is cryptocurrency not decentralized anymore?"
You're generalising  your emphasises on this...it's time for we to know that is not all cryptocurrencies are decentralized, but many do think that every crypto is a decentralized, whereas decentralization of cryptocurrency is based on the core ideal of the industry..because every crypto project starts from wide spectrum and it ranges from decentralized network to centralized asset... so what i mean in essence is that the project of crypto will determine if it's decentralized or centralized...

You don't have to queue at the banks still, your finance is still in your hands, this whole thing that's happening is trying to distract people like you to trust centralisation even more, don't fall for it.

Everyone has the option to go privacy completely in this space, this begins with you, it's a choice that people who really need to stand on their own needs to make.

You can't be rooting out for privacy and decentralisation and then moving your funds into Binance and Coinbase, people only runs their mouth about decentralisation and they aren't practicing it.

Keep in mind Bitcoin is still decentralized so the cons that were froze weren't Bitcoin but stable coins and everyone knows that stable coins like USDT and USDC are centralized so they can be froze anytime when such a hack takes place. The Bitcoin is still decentralized and it will always remain decentralized but when you ask about cryptocurrencies then you need to understand that all cryptocurrencies aren't decentralized.

can you share that news? Because I checked, there was no news yet that the stolen funds particularly the $2.8 billion that was frozen had already been returned to Binance. I think Binance would make an announcement if the funds were indeed returned but as of this writing I haven't seen any announcement yet.

Use a noncustodial wallet for holding and only use exchanges for just exchanges of cryptocurrencies. Bitcoin is decentralized, and also it is worth knowing that some few coins are decentralized, but most cryptocurrencies are not that decentralized.

What you are referring to is not about cryptocurrencies are decentralized or not decentralized, you are referring to having your coins on centralized platforms which is similar to the banks. You should not expect centralized exchanges not to be similar to the banks.

f you want full control, use noncustodial wallets that are open source and reputed.

It seems to me that another question is emerging here: has the decentralization of these currencies become a "pretty" facade for actual centralization? How will these contradictory double standards "coexist" with the original concept behind these cryptocurrencies? In other words, are they decentralized in some instances, yet become centralized in others?

I have always thought crypto to be my finances in my hands, free from outside influence, I don't have to cue at a bank or answer to any institution before I get access to my holdings, but it seems that times are changing faster than we can keep up with.
Well, cryptocurrencies (and certain others, like XMR) remain your own property, at least until malicious actors gain access to them. But as you noted, times are changing; in the future, regulators may mandate the reporting of such assets or even require them to be held by regulated intermediaries, such as exchanges or brokers. (In fact, this is already the case in some countries, where there is a requirement to report the ownership of cryptocurrencies.) Of course, this only applies if you hold the cryptocurrency directly, rather than through an intermediary like Binance.

What does this mean for cryptocurrency and it's original vision?
I believe that the stablecoins in question, Tether and Circle (with over $2.3 billion frozen), never incorporated decentralization into their core concept. Meanwhile, Ripple, which has long been accused of being centralized, somehow failed (or perhaps chose not) to freeze the 233.46 million XRP tokens siphoned off by a hacker during the Binance hack.

I said the information is not yet to be confirmed...That's news I saw from social media and also Google it and it narrows to same point, so it can be say to be true except Binance exchange announce it to their social media handle..you can go check through Google or you check from their x handle to verify if the information is legit or not..

I'm not sure how they will enforce this to be honest. If the user decide to swap their coins and send it to another wallet, will they go door to door and force them to hand the keys? Sounds like it will discourage a lot of users to comply and they'll use other means to protect their coins instead. Sure, they can mandate every wallet developers to do KYC and whatnot, but the cost to enforce such things probably out weight the benefit. They can simply tighten control around exchanges and fiat-crypto gateway since most users probably don't mind sending KYC over there. Not sure you can say the same if your government ask your ID before you can download Electrum, for example.
