The other day I was considering a statement I made about living poor, and later realized that it could be a de-motivating factor for people who aim to be rich in order to show off or flaunt the riches. I think this group are in the majority which explains why most rich people's homes or properties have lots of fanciful and unnecessary things.
There is another group who wouldn't care whether their riches are known about or not as long as they are useful to others/society... This should be the minority.
 
And there are people who want to be rich to escape poverty and be able to live a comfortable life.. This group of people are less likely to live poor or be selfless but their top priority is not to show off. They are more concerned about self and family.

It's quite surprising that "show off" is a motivating factor to be rich for many. What if nobody cares, would they consider being rich. This likely will be a desperate group of people who would lack patience and easily fall to the temptation of overnight riches.
As for the rich ones who can live poor, I think they will do well managing a country or even businesses, and will also be very patient people and less financially corrupt. It'll be much better to live or invest in countries, organizations or businesses run by such people since they are more likely to focus on wellbeing of people rather than to make as much money as possible to live selfishly/extravagantly.

Why having to pick one or the other? Do you really believe that there is nothing in the middle? Trying to categorize people into some big ego maniac who buy gold toilets, or quiet saints that live in a shack does not correspond with real life... It's way messier than that.

Most of the wealthy people I know (or at least those in the upper-middle class) lead simple lives and don’t try to flaunt their wealth at every turn. There's no reason why people shouldn't buy the things they want or live in a house they like, provided they can afford it.

For me, wealth is not bragging about what you have, but rather not having to struggle economically and learning what to do and how to do it with money, learning how to earn it and how to use it in the best way in our life and in the life of our environment. For me personally a better lifestyle is to live comfortably and not luxuriously.

Don't forget that the societal influence and background on some rich people is the cause of their behavior when they finally become rich, there are those who were born into riches, their behavior towards richness differs from those who struggle and come from nothing to becoming rich.

Strugglers who finally become rich tends to acquire fancy properties and leaving luxuriously because he admires them when nothing was available, he was a laughingstock so he work diligently to acquire them after a long run to show off to those who mock at him, that he made it.

Those who are born into riches might not have the mindset of a struggler, there were richness in ground already, so maintaining the riches is the target and not to show off to anyone.
You can't blame any of the categories of people I've just outlined, the background shapes and influences the lifestyle of every rich person.

Old money do not necessarily show off their wealth because they do not have the need to prove themselves to anyone. New money however often fall into the trap of being too loud about their wealth, I believe they do so in a way to compensate for the years they didn’t have money. What they don’t realise is that showing off your wealth only attracts bad actors and people who just want to take from you. I’d rather be rich and live quietly than be in the spotlight. I think you're a bit hard on the show-off group, OP. People who grew up with little get called foolish for buying expensive or flashy stuff with their newfound money; they are called vain, arrogant, superficial, and so on. Thing is, if you grew up with little, scarcity gets baked into the brain, and affects how you evaluate risk, social risk included. Getting rich gives you a sense of security that you kinda want to broadcast: whether it’s by wearing designer clothing or a heavy gold chain, people who were poor signal that they aren’t so easily taken advantage of now. In a sense, they are just shrewdly adapting to a society that used to ignore them.

For them, an expensive watch may prevent feelings of inferiority. Since value is subjective, the watch has real utility to the owner. It's pretty well known in economics that when societies solve basic material problems, consumers shift toward positional consumption. Once basic needs (like food) are satisfied, individuals start vying for prestige and other abstract markers of social distinction. Getting rid of that urge is hard, if not impossible, since it's standard primate behavior. Calling them show-offs or impatient won't help much.

Wanting money and status is not a crime; both are perfectly natural. Nobody should be blamed for wanting material security and social standing, which is what most people want anyway. Money just matters to them first for security, then for status, so your first and third groups are often the same people. Only a few can truly ignore status and reputation. Either they are already sitting comfy in elite circles, or they just don't care about the world around them. So a "rich poor man" exists, just a lot rarer than you think.

It is not easy for everyone to live like a poor person even after being rich. Those who can live a simple life even after becoming rich have that habit and are good and commendable. But for people who can afford that lifestyle, its their choice, it's a matter of preference as some people want to spend their money that way. As your income increase, you also tend to use things that would make your life easier and better.
For me, I'd rather save than show off, while some of my colleagues would rather take credit to go to fancy restaurants and clubs and wear designer clothes. It's my lifestyle and it's theirs.
I don't think we should dictate people how they should live if they can afford but its also not a good idea to compromise with your other needs just to look rich.

​No offense though what I'd like to say is this when you have a lot of money, you will likely want to buy anything that comes to your mind. It's not flaunting your money no, it's your standards. For most people in my country, they are working hard to become rich and escape poverty and live a comfortable life. This has always been the motivating factor. The show-offs often comes after they acquire the riches, but that doesn't mean it's bragging, but it's a way of telling other people or their relatives who struggles financially that they can too.

IMO, It doesn't really matter what was the motives behind when someone wants to get rich. They worked hard for it and earned it, they deserved what they want to have when they acquire those riches. As long as the money they earn is clean.
It doesn't hurt anyone when the rich people are buying expensive and luxurious stuff, which we think it's not necessary in everyday living. In fact, they are lowkey helping the community generating  job opportunities and keeping the current production companies running.

Being rich is all about the adventures and also the attention that comes with it, but originally speaking one of the main reasons for being rich is about being able to get whatever you want without being able to think much about it and also feel much about the expense and the impact of that choice on your financial status. I want you to understand that nobody is minority...it's our thinking faculty that makes us to think we're minority....only thing the we needs is the encouragement and pathways to be rich...the rich is not majority and the poor is not minority..a rich can fall to be poor and a poor can as well stand to be rich tomorrow....

And there are people who want to be rich to escape poverty and be able to live a comfortable life.. This group of people are less likely to live poor or be selfless but their top priority is not to show off. They are more concerned about self and family.

Well, there are people who really value their status in society even pretending to be rich while just working as a staff member with a minimum salary, but there's really nothing we can do since it's their lives and they live with their lies. But it's really happening in real life, although I don't know people like that, I've only seen them in movies, and you know what, I hate that kind of behavior so if I see a movie like that even if it's AI generated, I'm somehow tempted to watch it as I want to see those pretenders pay for their mistakes in the end.

With what I've noticed with the real rich and wealthy people, they are not there to impress people, they don't like showing off what they have proven to the world already. That's why they don't care if someone flaunts in front of them and that's not a big matter to them. They'll even be targeted by people who has bad intention in knowing them. Those who are showing off, they're probably proud of what they have become and it might be the first time for them to hold such money. But, as soon as they realized that it's only attracting bad energy, bad people and bad karma to them, they'll start to work in silence and continue to become rich just like the old traditional rich people does.

I feel that there's usually something that inspires some people who aims to make money only for the purpose of showing off, and few things I have thought of is that they must have been mocked, oppressed and made to suffer by their boss or supposed helper. People have different ways they take or process things, someone else might just feel motivated to make sure they make money and stay low but someone else will also have the motivation to make money plus an added intention to show off after they made the money because they want their oppressor to see that they also made it.

It is said that money brings out the true character of a man. It is also said that don’t trust the loyalty of a poor man. It is also said that if you want to know who a man is, give him money that he has never handled all his life, then you will see the true nature of that man.

Right now if I tell you that I will be a rich poor man or I will show off  when I become rich, don’t believe me. Myself I don’t know how I will live my life if I eventually become rich. I’m not a rich man yet, I don’t know how it feels to be rich. I think I will have to wait till I become rich to know how I will live my life then. I can tell you now that I will be a rich poor man, and when I finally become rich and get carried away with the show off lifestyle. You will see me as a lair and I won’t like that.
