Disclosure first: I run csgopromocodes.com, which is an affiliate site for CS2 skin casinos. There are no referral links in this post and I am not linking a single casino. The four links at the bottom are free browser tools on my site - no account, no deposit, nothing to sign up to, nothing that pays me. If a mod still reads that as advertising, say so and I will edit them out; the maths stands without them.

1. The part everyone already knows

A skin upgrader lets you stake a skin against a more expensive target. The win chance is roughly:

stake value / target value * (1 - house edge)

So a $10 skin on a $20 target at a 5% edge gives you 47.5%, not 50%. That is fine. It is disclosed, it is the edge, you knew.

2. The part that is not disclosed

The site decides what your skin is worth and what the target is worth. Neither valuation has to match Steam.

If a site values your deposited skin 5% below Steam and prices the target 5% above Steam, then measured in real Steam value your effective edge is roughly 14%, not 5%.

The 5% is honest. It is just being applied to two numbers that were already moved in the house's favour before the wheel spun. Nothing about this requires the operator to cheat, and nothing about it shows up in a provably fair check.

This is the number I would want logged publicly and I have never seen anyone do it properly.

3. Chaining is worse than one big jump

At a 5% edge:

Code:
8x in a single upgrade          11.88%
three chained 2x upgrades       10.72%

Intuition says splitting the jump spreads the risk. The maths says every hop pays the toll again.

4. Case opening, for comparison

Average value returned per dollar spent, using Valve's published rarity odds against Steam Community Market medians (prices collected 22 Sep 2026):

Code:
Gallery                52%
Dreams & Nightmares    49%
Fever                  48%
Kilowatt               38%
Recoil                 35%
Revolution             32%

Every one of them returns less than it costs. Revolution hands back about a third.

5. Two house edges worth memorising

The 15-slot colour wheel that every CS2 site runs: 7 of 15 slots pay 2x, so you get 14/15 back per unit staked. That is a 6.67% edge, identical on red, black and green.

European roulette, the game people in this section call a sucker's bet: 2.70%.

The skin wheel is about two and a half times as expensive as the thing everyone already warns you about.

Crash, at a 4% edge: 10x is reached in 9.6% of rounds, and the round instant-crashes at 1.00x roughly 4.95% of the time. That second figure is what ends martingale runs, and it is the one nobody counts when they plan one.

6. What provably fair does and does not prove

The usual construction: server seed hashed and published in advance, client seed you control, incrementing nonce, roll = HMAC-SHA256(server seed, client seed:nonce), then the first N hex characters mapped into the game's range.

The mapping differs per game and is worth reading before you trust an implementation:

  • 15-slot wheel: first 8 hex characters taken modulo 15
  • upgrader: first 13 hex characters (52 bits) scaled to a number from 0 to 100

Here is the part I think gets misunderstood constantly in this section: provably fair proves the roll was not altered after the fact. It proves nothing about the size of the house edge, and nothing whatsoever about the prices the site assigned to your skins.

Section 2 above is entirely compatible with a flawless provably fair implementation. A site can publish every seed, pass every verification, and still take 14% off you through valuation alone.

Tools, if you want to check any of this yourself

Free, no account, no deposit, demo coins or demo skins only, nothing can be won or withdrawn:

What I actually want from this thread

Has anyone here systematically logged a skin site's deposit and target valuations against Steam medians over a period of time? Point 2 is easy to reason about and apparently nobody has measured it. A few hundred logged deposits across three or four sites would settle how wide that spread really runs, and whether it widens on more expensive items.

If someone has that data or wants to collect it, I will do the analysis and publish it with the raw numbers attached, no paywall and no referral links on it.

18+ only. The tools above are demo only and nothing on them can be deposited, won or withdrawn. If gambling has stopped being fun, BeGambleAware.org is free and confidential.

The point that stuck with me is that provably fair only proves the roll wasn't changed and says nothing about how the site prices your skin and the target.. So a site can pass every verification and still take much more than the stated edge through valuation alone.

Thanks for the tools too!

Thanks for the detailed explanation even though some of the terminology are strange to me. I have also failed to know how to use this information and when I have to use them. Do you think that knowing this details will help a player chose better casino to gamble? In other words, can this analysis be used to measure the reputation of casinos amd by extension know when they are being provably fair and when they are not.

Does it mean that someone who has been using gambling site wouldn't know how to choose gambling site or something?
As I know, if someone wants to talks about how to choose a casino to gamble they should be checking their reputation, their Ann thread to know how frequent people has been laying complain I regards to a particular site without overly being carried away with their juicy offer?
