Bitcoin exists to cut middlemen and thus refunds and freezing assets, when customers lie that they didn't receive goods and services. Anonymity enables avoidance of identification and having to go to court with lying customers, which is a problem if there is no proof of delivery of goods/services.
Ether enabled state machines in relation to decentralized exchanges, which enable overcollateralized stablecoins and lending, while Monero offers anonymity without scarcity. After they had surged, Bitcoin scarcity started to matter more than finality and privacy before we got Tesla in relation to electric vehicles and computer vision, which matters when auditing science graphs with robots. Those science graphs can be used to train neural nets and reward sum and mean of complexity increase, efficiency increase and complexity of efficiency increase with a global dynamic difficulty. Those rewards could be used as collateral to grow organizations similar to free mining pools with debt.

Proof-of-work proves space in time and as decentralization is all about proofs and not about how distributed a system is, Zcash Crosslink would turn heads to Bitcoin.
