Hello BitcoinTalk Community,

Bitcoin was designed to allow people to transfer value without relying on traditional financial intermediaries.

However, one question remains important for merchants, exchanges, and everyday users:

How many blockchain confirmations are actually necessary before considering a Bitcoin payment safe?

1. Zero-Confirmation Transactions

Some merchants may consider accepting Bitcoin payments before the first blockchain confirmation.

This can improve the payment experience, but unconfirmed transactions carry double-spending risks.

Would you accept a zero-confirmation payment for a small purchase?

2. One Confirmation vs. Six Confirmations

Different services apply different confirmation requirements.

A single confirmation provides some protection, while additional confirmations make reversing a transaction increasingly difficult.

However, waiting for multiple confirmations can introduce delays.

3. Does Transaction Value Matter?

Should a $20 Bitcoin payment require the same number of confirmations as a $50,000 transaction?

In my opinion, transaction value and risk tolerance should influence confirmation policies.

4. The Lightning Network

The Lightning Network offers another approach to Bitcoin payments by enabling transfers through payment channels.

Could Lightning become the preferred option for smaller everyday payments?

Community Discussion

I would like to hear your thoughts:

1. How many confirmations do you personally consider sufficient?
2. Would you accept zero-confirmation Bitcoin payments?
3. Should exchanges use different confirmation requirements depending on transaction value?
4. Do you believe Lightning is a practical solution for everyday Bitcoin payments?

Looking forward to hearing your experiences and opinions.

1. How many confirmations do you personally consider sufficient?
For me three confirmation is ok and standard, some platform needs two before a transaction is complete others needs three, so generally I think three works well.

Quote
2. Would you accept zero-confirmation Bitcoin payments?

If you meant I owned a business and someone sends Bitcoin with zero confirmation of course I won't let you go just yet because the transaction is not complete, I don't think a business is complete if the transaction isn't complete.

Quote
3. Should exchanges use different confirmation requirements depending on transaction value?
No confirmation requirements should be uniform regardless of the amount of the transaction.

For confirmations, what I normally notice is a minimum of 2 confirmations, especially on exchanges and gambling sites.

But if we are really talking about Bitcoin adoption for daily transactions, I think the best solution is the Lightning Network (LN). People need to understand and adopt it as it could solve the problem of Bitcoin's slow transaction processing.

And there's some good news based on River's Bitcoin Adoption Report 2026. Accordingly.
Quote
Lightning volume grows 300% in 2025
The Lightning Network surpassed $1 billion in monthly volume, and grew by 300% in 2025.
The average transaction over the Lightning Network reached $223.
Network capacity hit a new high in 2025 after 3 years of stagnation.

So these numbers show that Bitcoin is not just being used as an investment, but its use for payments is growing as well.

How many Bitcoin confirmations is enough?

You can read more details in that blog post but here is a quick recommendation taken from it.
Quote
What's the rule of thumb for an acceptable number of confirmations?

1 confirmation: sufficient for small payments less than $1,000.

3 confirmations: for payments $1,000 - $10,000. Most exchanges require 3 confirmations for deposits.

6 confirmations: good for large payments between $10,000 - $1,000,000. Six is standard for most transactions to be considered secure.

10 confirmations: suggested for large payments greater than $1,000,000.

You can consider how much is the total value of bitcoin moved in latest Bitcoin blocks.

I will take the 3rd point into consideration; this also relates to the scale of the business. You certainly wouldn’t want your customers waiting more than 10 minutes to complete a transaction, especially when the items you sell are typically priced at $100 or less.

You could establish separate liquidity routes based on minimum transaction values. For instance, Wallet A could handle transactions under $500 with a lower confirmation requirement say, just 1 confirmation (a standard practice among CEXs), while Wallet B could require 3–6 confirmations for transactions exceeding $500.

Thanks for bringing this up, I've been wanting to ask a question pertaining this confirmation before and now see like the perfect time, why did exchanges failed to process withdrawal until certain numbers of confirmation is met?

Even if it's as low as $20 worth of coin you aren't going to be able to withdraw until that confirmation number is met, what is this trying to tell us? That the transaction can be fake or could be reversed if they let customers withdraw before a certain confirmation?

I think every business owners should do what online exchanges are doing, it seems there is more to confirmation than I know and if you can share some insights on this I will appreciate, thanks.

The Bitcoin Tx confirmation that is necessary for every transaction depends on the amount and who you're dealing with. But most crypto exchanges commonly use 3 for deposits these days.
I personally believe waiting for 6 or more confirmations is excessive. Zero-confirmation payments are only for small amounts (used for coffee, snacks, etc.) through the use of Lightning

Treating a $20 payment the same as a $50,000 one is inefficient.

Yes, lightning network provide real solution is for day-to-day spending (there's currently security issue with lightning server as we speak). But onchain is still better for big amounts, while Lightning is clearly superior for frequent small payments.

1. How many confirmations do you personally consider sufficient?
2. Would you accept zero-confirmation Bitcoin payments?

4. Do you believe Lightning is a practical solution for everyday Bitcoin payments?
1. I consider 1 confirmation to be sufficient.
2. Yes I can accept zero confirmation of the transaction if it is not having RBF but most transactions these days have RBF.
3. Exchanges are businesses, they are left to their own opinions. Most exchanges accept 1 confirmation for deposits and 2 or 3 confirmations for withdrawals.
4. Many people do not like lightning payment, but if you can use it for small amount of bitcoin transactions, yes.

I prefer six confirmations rather three, not because I feel that three confirmations is not sufficient but to guarantee complete irreversibility, six is better. The Bitcoin network operates in such a way that the more the confirmations, the harder it becomes to reverse a transaction. So putting the time requirements into consideration, six confirmation is safer and also not much time consuming whicb is why I prefer it to lower confirmations.

1. Two confirmation is OK for me because a new block has been mined on the block which has my transaction in it and becomes difficult to reverse it. There can be a chain reorg in one confirmation.

2. No I wouldn't accept zero confirmation for no reason.

3. That's how it has been since onset for exchanges. The higher the amount, the higher the number of confirmation needed by an Exchange.

4. Yes LN is good for small transactions.

1 confirmation is good enough for the regular transactions but if we are talking about the transferred value in millions then we can consider 3 is almost impossible to reverse and I am saying this because it is already an overkill with the curreny difficulty in the mining a block.

Most centralized platforms require 2 confirmations before fully crediting the sent Bitcoin.  For the payment system, on-chain confirmation is too slow, it will hinder lots of business processes, so it is best to use lightning network if one thinks of accepting Bitcoin as a payment option.  The reason behind recommending the Lightning Network is that it is almost an instant transaction that can compete with current fiat digital payments in terms of fast transfers.  Since the Lightning Network can be a near-instant transaction, it is best used as a medium of exchange.
