Anyone has setup a p2pool node and using gridseeds to mine?  I would really appreciate it if someone could give me a hand setting up a node.  I'm having trouble following the steps.

Thanks.

I don't see how those two are related.

Anyway, what tutorial did you use to setup p2pool? There are plenty.
At what point did you get stuck?
What OS do you want to use?

I followed a tutorial in this forum and also on litecointalk.  But wasn't lucky to get it working.

I want to run it on win8.

my honest opinion dont bother lol.

iv been trying to do the p2pool for my amt-bitmine boards, as they refuse to connect to solo mine via conventional means for maybe 7 hrs now. iv used every guide under the sun (google) and here and none works at all.
id give up.
many errors and each guide gives 1/2 sometimes 3 different variants.
one even had the balls to say open cmd to open a folder?!?!?!?!?!?!? to then use cmd to:  step one - change directory by typing "cd c:/python/whatever" after that type "cd c:/somewhetre else" what was the point in step one. you could try the irc chat channel #p2pool but there you will find around 50+ people logged in waiting to help. but none of them have fingers!

so in summary dont bother pmsl unless you want a brain tumor.

Thank you for the honest reply.  I tried and also gave up.  I thought maybe it will be easy and more practical, but I guess it's not as easy as it sounds.  Also I realized the tutorials are NOT written well.  Like you said.

i tried this in desperation after failing at setting up a pool in aws just to get a miner to solo

What's seems to be interesting about the whole crypto business, is that the people who are making the money are all hush hush about it and the rest of us trying to find our way in this swamp.

I still can't seem to settle on a coin to mine.  Every time I think I found a coin and start mining it, something or another goes wrong with it.

The of course you run the math, and it all comes down to the same amount.  Same as the multicoin pools.

So the guys that know how to setup things from the beginning are making the profit.  That's why every time a new coins comes up, they ask for nodes.  They mine it first when it's easy to mine, make large amounts on it before pools are up and running.

Then when the coins hit the exchanges, they sell and make bitcoins off of people like me who sell thinking I made profit, yet I made my usual same amount as if I let another big guy with a big multi coin pool do it for me!!

What's up with that?

what software are you using to run your gridseeds ?

In order to mine on your own p2pool node and to solo mine I think you need to use the get work protocol, not stratum. so you need software that supports it.  I've been using cpuminer-gc3355 & it's great software, but does not support the get work protocol; the only downside to it.

I'm pretty sure cgminer supports get work. I've used it to solo mine with gpu's, but haven't used it yet with my gridseeds.

Edit: get work is needed only for solo mining. P2pool is stratum.  apologies......

p2pool is a great idea but the implementation is questionable at times.  I think some of the more mature coins have better p2pool software but my experience says it is hit or miss.  So once you get it setup, you're going to have the same or different issues when you switch coins.  You'd be much better off spending your time researching the best and most trustworthy pool.

I'm using Hashra Controla for my gridseeds.  I think it's using cgminer now.

I have spent enough time trying.  It is better just to find a good pool and mine on it.  Or use an existing p2p node.  Even with an existing node, I realized that I have a high dead hash rate.  I mean well over 15% !!

Yet the return is almost the same as a pool.

Now, having said that, all the p2pool supporters claim that it's better for the coin network to be on p2pool, yet no one is really willing to show how to setup a node. At the end of the day, they want you to use their's and get the silly 0.5 - 1% fee.

Gridseeds work fine with p2pool (stratum). I have been running them here for a while: http://xpool.net:9555

If you don't know how to set it up yourself use one of the many public ones available. List: http://p2pools.org/

Follow that for windows
And this for linux carefully. Swap vertcoin for altcoin name where aplicable. Worked for me just coins with randow blocks bonus blocks and sporadic halfing are a pain. But standard btc ltc halfing coins will be fine. Dont forget to open your ports and google your public ip for pool connections
