An effort to better represent bitcoin as a symbol has been launched.

The Unicode symbol has been chosen by a website of industry members as a way to better legitimize bitcoin as a symbol both in print and online media.

NEW symbol is nice, but shouldn't be a concern. Once we get mass adoption down, THEN we should worry about a new symbol.

Here's the interesting part:

Having a symbol in Unicode form means it would work in different fonts and formats and would help to better convey the cryptocurrency to the masses in various forms of media.

It is not a Unicode Symbol, so you can't write it, you could just copy/paste the Picture. I don't think, that would work in e.g. Excel.

old news. i remember this symbol trying to gain consumer confidence 2 years ago.. but BTC is always better
others have been the thailand baht (single vertical line) ฿

the problem is that Ƀ is a alphabet letter.
Quote
B with stroke (majuscule: Ƀ, minuscule: ƀ) is a letter of the Latin alphabet, formed from B with the addition of a bar, which can be through either the ascender or the bowl. It is used as a phonetic symbol to represent to transcribe the sound [β].[1]

〈Ƀ〉 is also a letter of the alphabets of the Jarai and Katu languages of Vietnam, and is used in standardized texts in Old Saxon as well as in reconstructed forms of Proto-Germanic

this is like called a dollar S or a pound E which is boring as hell...

bitcoin needs a symbol that is NOT in the alphabet of any language. and that is why i think that making bitcoin as boring as the latin letter is silly, lazy and not inspirational.

and that is why the majority love BTC. but w all know that this industry want Ƀ so they can get their 15 minutes of fame.

If Microsoft can put a Windows key on every qwerty keyboard they can add BTC to Excel.

I really dislike very badly this new symbol. A logo, a symbol, a sign is made, thought-out from the beginning to integrate the whole idea behind it. That symbol does not give me such a understanding, and doesn't looks good either + don't forget the conspiratorial theory related to it.
If the problem is scalability and fonts and things like this, there is no need for an unknown group of people to change this without the approval of the people who are interested in this. I think people who are sane will likely don't get fool about this sort of distraction. In the end, Unicode will make and map a special character named Bitcoin.

Yeah, how about we let some randoms come in and demand to change a widely recognized symbol.

No way... if you're an early adapter, make your voice heard.

If I'm right that's basically one of the old alternative symbols.

It doesn't matter much what this industry group aims at. The Bitcoin symbol that people use will win in the end - and will eventually be included in Unicode.

The current symbol is much more common at the moment, so let's see how this turns out.

I wanted to comment on this.

It's funny that some "industry group"   (anonymous people who made a web page) publicly declare that they "aim to change" the bitcoin symbol.

The community will need to rally behind the idea or it wont go anywhere.

And I'm not seeing much enthusiasm.

-B-

PS:   Why are some companies using the wrong symbol already?   Lamassu ATM's have the wrong symbol?
