Best mining GPU?

So.. which GPU gives the most bang for the buck? I currently have a HD5970 which puts out roughly 600 Mhash/s.

Is there a comparison somewhere?

If you check the "Single Card Setups" section in https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Mining_hardware_comparison#Single_Card_Setups you'll see a column for Mhash/s/$.  The 6750 or 6770 are the cheapest, yet give fair performance of around 200 mhash/sec.

I'm getting a 6770-based card first.

At below $400 this is pretty much nothing that beats the 5970 in MH/W or MH/$.

For used cards the 5870 is slightly cheaper (~$150) than 5970 (~$300) but the higher density of the 5970 makes up for that IMHO.

Im currently using BitMinter Client - is there a better miner out there?

Bitminter is pretty good.  I have found slightly better results (and more customization) w/ cgminer

just play with them not too many
another thing alot of people are doing is underclock the memory to 300mhz - that allows higher core overclock at same temp.

Bitminter doesn't really have a lot of customization.  It is a very good miner made by the pool author for "casual" miners.  If you want max control you should look at cgminer.  Try adjusting core clock and memclock.  I find 800/300 a good place to start.   I run most of my cards at 820/190 some slightly higher, some slightly lower.  Each card is unique in what it can handle.

Once you get a miner stable for say a couple hours they may still go dead after days.  Bring the clock down slightly.  You will find the final clock which is stable 24/7 for weeks (sometimes months).  I have one rig going on 48 days of uptime (I haven't even upgraded cgminer because I want to see how long it can go).  Barring no power outages I think it could run until summer w/ no downtime.

I know a fair bit about overclocking, but im completly new to mining

Ive been trying to get guiminer and phoenix working properly, but guiminer is damn slow and phoenix gives me tons of disconnects.
