The network tries to produce one block per 10 minutes. It does this by automatically adjusting how difficult it is to produce blocks.

While no idea is perfect, some ideas are useful.

somebody should put out a bitcoin for dummies book

Good overall though some of the details were either outdated or incorrect.  It's a hard task because the project and its ecosystem is evolving so quickly.  Even the wiki is starting to show a number of areas needing update -- (e.g., wallet security article).

The wiki has two additional articles:
 - https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Introduction

Also, Bitcoin Primer: http://coinlab.com/2011/12/bitcoin-primer

And podcast (though over a year old now): http://www.bitcoinmoney.com/post/2560941112
