5870 cgminer help please

I am stumped.

I installed Xubuntu on a USB drive and did everything correctly. OpenCL installed, etc.

cgminer gets around 400mh/s when i just use 1 5870.

When I turn on both of them I get around 200mh/s each and around 50% utilization on each card.

crossfire cable not hooked up. aticonfig sees both cards just fine.

what am i doing wrong?  Are the cards not getting enough power, not enough work?

750W power supply. sempron cpu, 4gb ram, 890fxa-gd70 mb.

any ideas?

Try setting the intensity of both cards to 7 in cgminer.

I set them to 9.  makes no difference.  I will try 7.

-I 7 doesn't help.

When I type cgminer -n it says 1 GPU detected.

Then I run cgminer and I get 410Mh/s

Then I quit cgminer and type export DISPLAY=:0

Then I type cgminer -n and it says 2 GPU detected

Then I run cgminer again and it should 2 running but only 200Mh/s each.
