What can you ask more from a coin?

They had the option of creating some serious variety of algorithms,
but mostly wasted it by using 4 almost interchangeable Bitcoin-like hash functions,
plus the altcoin default, scrypt.

I look forward to more variety in the future, perhaps with some CPU-friendly choice as well...

Quite forgot to answer you  second question.
Why? I like the coins that are not so high, and getting sometimes (too) little publicity.  Help them by talking about them en buy some.
Sometimes it's just a feeling!

I'm thinking that GPL coin is rather interesting even though I haven't been able to read up on it as much as I'd like.

I think it is more important to store value in the blockchain ledger perceived most legitimate by the cryptocurrency community, than to worry about "interesting features" [unless you are a dev pushing innovation forward].

It seems to me that a "coin" is actually two things: (1) a payment network, and (2) a shared ledger of stored value.  If the technology running Payment Network A is suddenly deemed "the best", then the community using Ledger B can just adopt a similar network without "panic trading" out of Ledger B.

The devs are willing to change one of the algos with a cpu friendly algo,Even though you can use the groestl algo if you want to cpu mine.

For me:

Einsteinium / EMC2: Because I like to think about how fast it could advance human technological progress if it grows, especially if it somehow became larger than where BTC is now. (not saying that will happen, Tongue) Imagine a crypto-currency funding the tech to get us to Mars.

Bytecoin / BCN: Because it's such a ridiculous mystery. New protocol, anonymous, a whole blockchain running secretly on the deepweb for 2 years. What? If it's truly anonymous, IMO this coin would've been huge if anyone knew about it. Defines interesting.

Litecoin because i seen it listed as a donation address a year ago+ on the web site The Pirate Bay.
and since i noticed it's always the number 2 coin on various exchanges etc.

imitation is the blah blah blah flattery blah blah lol

if LTC is not a good answer then..
Gridcoin maybe because i like the idea of using it to find little Green Men on Mars Smiley

Not to mention a huge and growing announcement thread, even complete with drama.
