I always like DUMeter running - let's me know if something is eating up my bandwidth.

I use NOD by Eset for antivirus.

Haw You tried games? If your job doesn't require your use PC in home, then the other reason to buy a new computer are the games. Personally I think it's a waste of money if you buy a new pc every 3 or 4 years but don't play games on it.

I suggest you to install bluestack, a good android simulator where you can download and install all android progs and games to play in PC

First Linux because programming on Windows is really disseminating and causes depression.
 Others will depend on what you would like to develop. Eclipse is nice, if there a version for your language, but it consumes too much memory.

Some random programs you might would like:


djvu viewer - far better than adobe pdf, also saves where you stopped your reading. No need for that if you go to linux.
VLC player
Tor browser.

If you plan to develop, install Git and have a good version control from the start.

Also go to Linux, I prefer Debian or Debian-based clones(ex: Linux Mint Debian version)


Stay away from Ubuntu, for long it a crappy OS
