you really need a radical change to overtake it, and no i don't mean just some features like anonymity or other thing like that, but an entirely new "system", like btc was completely new when began
you know maybe not based on crypto world at all...but it must still offer something useful over bitcoin

Presuming that at some stage bitcoin will be overtaken by another crypto, how soon at the earliest could this happen?
I could see this happening within 3 to 5 years. But most likely what you'll are coins like Goldcoin (GLD) and Dogecoin (DOGE) rising up to join Litecoin (LTC) to battle it out for the number two spot. IMO

Never. Bitcoin dies and altcoins die.
That's like saying if the dollar, euro, or pound dies it would never be replaced. Of course it would. No matter what it is, there will always be something. Period.

Before anything like that happens we need to see alt coins giving BTC some direct competition. So far there are none of note, most just follow BTC. Maybe, and a big MAYBE at that, the secure 'hide my ass' anonymous transaction coins. There are a few, I don't know if it will be any of the existing ones.

None of late from this niche community will overtake bitcoin, however something commercial may in the longterm. Most the flavors of the week here will die.
I also think (and maybe called crazy here for doing so) longterm ltc could surpass btc (just from an investors on the street point of view due to fairness, well percieved fairness).

LTC fails on it's original goal of being ASIC resistant. I'm sure that would deter investors from further putting their money in the coin, as it's value would only go down over time...look at the charts, it's already went down over 30%. Most of those old coins are not doing so well, Peercoin, Primecoin, Litecoin, there prices are only getting lower as people lose interest and move away from them. It's the new coins like Darkcoin, that would end up taking the lead and the spot right next to Bitcoin.

Maybe Bitcoin will stay forever. Maybe like gold, as a longterm value storage. But I won´t be overtaken from an 1.0 coin. Not Dark and Black and all this clones. That´s just gambling. If there will be a bigger player it will be a 2nd gen coin like NXT, NEM, exocoin, maybe Ethereum if they don´t mess it up. Or there will be other players in 3rd or 4th generation.

The "market cap" of the top 100 alts together are not even close (<10%, and from this 10% LTC takes 5%) of the BTC market cap. Apart from NXT (and it's clones) none of them offers any significant improvement over bitcoin. None of the alts have any significant real world services (you can't even buy a single banana or a gallon of petrol for DRK). Until an alt doesn't have good services - good means services what you need in you daily routine - all of the stuff above are just dreaming.

I've been reading about the new proof-of-resource coin by maidsafe. Basically farmers get coins by providing cloud services (storage, processing power, apps, etc) to users on the network, so it's not just simply electricity being burned like proof-of-work coins. There are some potential vulnerabilities though, and I've posted on the maidsafe thread asking about them. Also, there hasn't been any real-life practical testing done yet, so it's uncertain how well the concept could be implemented and whether there will be a demand for
