Hey guys, I'm wondering, what are some of the ways in which we could encourage more women to adopt bitcoin or other alternative currencies? I'm setting up a web magazine for women and I want to include practical bitcoin information. Then I wondered, what are the primary motivators for women to adopt bitcoin?
So I'd really like to know, what motivated you to start using bitcoin? Are you a male/female? Any suggestions you could give me to effectively promote and provide information about bitcoin? Thanks!

Haha. Make the coins pink. JK. The easiest way to get women involved is tell them about it, but don't patronise them.

www.bitcoinwomen.com has that covered. They are more known in Europe and that side of the world but they are looking to expand more in the US. You might want to contact them.

As a rule, men take risks and women don't. More women will get into bitcoin once it is an established technology. This is basic biology and would be taught in schools, if the world was a sane place.

Any altcoin except this one will be fine as a less-than-men-get alternative. Ideally the coin should be worth about 75 bits per the bitcoin. Or some such.

I have to say that the female participation in the Bitcoin sector is slowly increasing. According to some surveys in 2012, only around 1% of the Bitcoiners were female. But as per the recently released Mt Gox data, 5% of all the people who lost their coins there (i.e 1,400 out of a total of 70,000 users) were female. So we can say that there was a 500% increase in a time frame of 24 months!

Very true. And women don't mine generally. Did you see any woman digging gold lately? Same for mining bitcoins or altcoins. Minting or forging with PoS coins is already a bit simpler and it attracts savers which women are generally better at than men. And once there are useful day-to-day applications for cryptos including buying shoes without all the fees from 3rd parties, women will join in numbers.

I guess there's a few nerd women involved. However, most of the tech sector globally consists of men. This is only natural, and I don't see why we should try to change it.
Also, I think that any women participating in the community would be smart to pose as someone not easily recognizable as a woman. Use a neutral name to avoid all the unwanted attention. Esp. online, in uncivilized forums (like this one) and irc. That way it will be easier to discuss issues concerning bitcoin, and not being hit on by horny males.
On the other side, I never understood why women always needs to have women clubs whenever they're involved with something. Perhaps it has something to do with their social nature, that they feel they need to belong, even if it's a subset of that particular culture.
And yeah, if we really want to involve the women, we should make nice gadgets like apple does, with nice design. Women like nice looking things.
Alternatively, we should educate women that are foreign workers about how they could send money back home using bitcoin.
All in all, to have women start using bitcoin and continue using it, it must be something deeper that attracts them than just being part of some club.

This issue was raised before with a 26-page thread about it I think including some great screencaps of the qt client running in 'girl-mode': https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=261598.0Before starting up BetMoose (a place to predict real world stuff (launching very soon)), we (our team) thought really hard about this because it really is a huge untapped market. At the end of the day, there aren't THAT many reasons why women would need or want to use bitcoin right NOW. I think we need more light-hearted, fun stuff like pinterest or etsy to accept bitcoin first, then maybe something like 9gag but with doge? Doge is cute right? Not sure about what your females do online but maybe a nice mobile marketplace app would help as well. Plus a lot of girls have/use iPhones instead of Android, but as has been the case for the past few years, Android acceptance is growing more and more, including among women. Bitcoin is really a techy technology thing for now and when something comes along that will make it fun and useful and easy WITHOUT being bothersome to learn, then you can expect to see girls being interested in it. There are dozens of such ideas; I think we should dedicate this thread as a brainstorming thread, instead of a 'why or why not'.
