Bitcoin related research areas

I have a one year research project in my MSc curriculum. So i was suppose to address a existing issue in bitcoin protocol. Highly appreciate if someone can advise me and give me some ideas.

Bitcoin as you may well know is really about the protocol and backbone system, the currency and then the many alt coins and hybrid protocols  being developed.  What are the areas that you are specifically interested in?  I am assuming this is technical research not the economics side.

Yes this is a technical one. My area is information security.

My project duration is one year. So i am interested in doing a research project on bitcoin related thing. I would like to do some improvement for the bitcoin. So does somebody have an project idea?
