I mean seriously? MaidSafe? After e-10 milliseconds of solid concentration I can think of a dozen better names. Why not just call it FishPear, ZigPoop, WagBloob or LemonRod? Any of these would be as good as MaidSafe. Pity because apart from the name it sounds like it might actually be a good idea.

Exactly!

And can you imagine some burly man walking into a pub, asking for a pint and saying "can I pay by MaidSafe"? It just doesn't quite ring true. I vote that they rename it to FishPear.

It's not just you. This truly bugs me -- enough to resurrect the topic.

I'm a fairly rational person, and an engineer, but because branding is absolutely critical to project success, the lame name alone made me limit my initial investment. There is zero cool factor to the name, which I expect makes many investors yawn and look elsewhere.

The "SAFE" part is fine. The "MAID" part only hurts the coin.

If we go by the Igore naming guide, Maidsafe is a functional name (functional names, like "Computek" and "Qualiserve", are the bottom of the barrel for branding). Maidsafe is also evocative, but in the wrong way (I don't think they intended for you to imagine a cautious housemaid).

The best brand names are easy to remember and evocative in a compelling way.

Examples of great names, from a marketing perspective:

Dash  <- "Digital cash" that's fast. Both functional and experiential. Perfect branding.
Ether <- Evocative and somewhat functional. Has cool factor, and sort of describes the project in an abstract way. Love it.
Tesla <- Evocative.
Virgin <- Evocative and provocative. Not functional at all, yet one of the most successful examples of branding I know of.

Rather than describing the coin in its name, it's better to evoke to the idea of security. "Safe" is okay, but can still be interpreted as boring. Something evocative like "Vault" would interest me more.

Maidsafe is an acronym. It's also the name of A Company, not the network. It's already known as Safecoin. Safecoin will be the currency on the Safenetwork. You can use Safemail, or Safechat, or go to the Safemarket. Maybe post a video on Safetube

Seriously, you're engineer and didn't look into maid further, because of it's name? BTC has the Pizza guy paying 10,000 BTC for a pizza. You will be known as the ENGINEER who has already lost out on 10x possible gains! Lol! Why? Because you weren't evoked?

What does Safe evoke? Security.

I never bother to explore the coin, the coin is very feminine and it's not about an feminine organization,it's about renting of hard drive but wonder why the dev did not make it's name synonymous or related to hard drive,so users and investors can relate to this coin.

Name is more important than anything else.

People want to line up at the grocery store to buy & eat AnusFlakes™ with Sploodge Milk™ ?
Wanna drive a fucking FORD "Asshole-Mobile XL 2.0 with green tech" ?

The name is the first impression.. fail that and you're fucked.
It's almost as bad as having a name that is too hard to pronounce or spell.

How is that not obvious ?
Why am i the one to point it out ? again

Safe Coin ? Makes me suspicious & skeptical i can trust it. LOL
And why use the word coin ? Are they going to press quarters nickels and safe-dimes ?

ugghhhh  Roll Eyes

Next you will all be telling me the whole world will be throwing away FIAT to use Monero's instead  Cheesy

PS:
Nice pizza story but who gives a fuck ?
Missing out ? On what now ? Not everyone here is on their knee's for FIAT / BTC ROI's Roll Eyes
Don't sprinkle cheese on me and call me a pizza bucko !

name is the last thing altcoin developers and also the traders who join the pump and dumps care about!
all everyone is seeing is "profit" on their bitcoins so that they can have more bitcoin after that altcoin died.

and besides i say MaidSafe is a lot better than some other names that i come across, specially on shitty exchages such as yobit. you can see weird names like almost all the words in a dictionary such as Yes, Ride, Today, space, gay, pump, crash, ponzi, pig, ... (and yeah all of these names exist or existed at some point)

the funniest of all was something like crash

Monero is much away better to my ears rather than on maidsafe name which have been mentioned above its just like i need a maid to clean my house. Grin Monero name is  too masculine which is good indeed and sounds very attractive.I dont know what are on the minds of Devs of creating this weird named coin.

not sure, many does care about the name, bitcoin as such a beautiful name it's reason for the success, the name is important, if bitcoin was called bitbip or other stupid name it would not have this success, guaranteed
monero is succefull despite the bad name because there was no other good option for anonimity, i think things will change with zcash and classic, or zcoin

What does Safe evoke? Security.

Didn't see this earlier, but you're wrong to assume I didn't do my due diligence and I didn't invest.

My portfolio is up 13x since this was posted. I looked into MAID in depth long ago, and invested a decent amount (less than in Siacoin, more than in Storj).

I would have invested more if it was better branded, but I still have a decent position. So far, MAID is my worst performer, but I'm holding in anticipation of big gains long term. I've also invested in some other projects built on the Safenetwork.

Zero regrets. I invested the most into Siacoin at 29 satoshis, which is paying off ridiculously well.

Safe is brandable, as I mentioned before, so I have more confidence in "Safenetwork" than "Maidsafe". MAID is useless and actually harmful for branding. It being an acronym is irrelevant to that. Massive upside (more than 10x speculative pumps) will only happen with widespread adoption, and mainstream users don't care about technical acronyms. Glad they seem to be moving away from MAID and toward SAFE as the key word in the brand.
