This is nothing new with altcoins, now the main aim for developers is to just create a coin and have a successful ico , they really don't care about the names. Take this case there was a trump coin and now someone created freakin president trump coin. I mean wtf is happening to this community.

It's not just you. This truly bugs me -- enough to resurrect the topic.

I'm a fairly rational person, and an engineer, but because branding is absolutely critical to project success, the lame name alone made me limit my initial investment. There is zero cool factor to the name, which I expect makes many investors yawn and look elsewhere.

The "SAFE" part is fine. The "MAID" part only hurts the coin.

If we go by the Igore naming guide, Maidsafe is a functional name (functional names, like "Computek" and "Qualiserve", are the bottom of the barrel for branding). Maidsafe is also evocative, but in the wrong way (I don't think they intended for you to imagine a cautious housemaid).

The best brand names are easy to remember and evocative in a compelling way.

Examples of great names, from a marketing perspective:

Dash  <- "Digital cash" that's fast. Both functional and experiential. Perfect branding.
Ether <- Evocative and somewhat functional. Has cool factor, and sort of describes the project in an abstract way. Love it.
Tesla <- Evocative.
Virgin <- Evocative and provocative. Not functional at all, yet one of the most successful examples of branding I know of.

Rather than describing the coin in its name, it's better to evoke to the idea of security. "Safe" is okay, but can still be interpreted as boring. Something evocative like "Vault" would interest me more.

Nice analysis

I agree that the name itself is a bad idea but I don't believe it's the worst. There are really worst names of coins if you check out on exchanges. I'll give you an example , have you ever heard of "TITCOINS" or TITTIECOINS"?

MaidSafe is just the name of the current temporary token, when the network is live they will just be Safe coins.

Hahaha.. Gotta love this post. For me the first thought of MaidSafe was something to help abused house maids, providing them safety! A noble thought but I don't know if we need a coin for that?

At least the coin is talked about.
This way the name gets more attention.
Names are important (who don´t know Coke ?).
So it is not too bad to give a coin a "really bad name".  Wink

Exactly. This is more common that many developers realize. The name drives away investors before they have a chance to look closer at the project (I think it's a fascinating project, BTW).

Haha, now that's evocative. To further enhance the imagery, the domain name could be maidvault.asia.

Success to me means widespread adoption beyond crypto geek early adopters. The name is absolutely important for this.

Project originated in Scotland, I believe. MAID is an acronym related to their technology.

This is true. But if it's going to be a bad name it may as well be edgier. Like MaidVault or Mammoth Erection (a naughty scaffolding company).
