It's the poor man, rich man illusion. A person in debt is not free, and doesn't own anything.

If you've got the money; buy. If not; rent. Renting seems like a waste to me, but so is getting a mortgage.

I prefer owning. If you rent a house you pay every month an amount to someone else and after all the years you still have nothing. Better to pay a little bit more for your own house.

If the people around you honour your deed then I'd say owning a DETACHED house is the best, with some land on it, with terraced houses and flats it would be still extremely difficult to do stuff because you only have a wall between your neighbours rather than a portion of land and so on so that creates all kinds of legal craziness if you want to do something with it. As others have said, if you're not sure where you're going to be rent is a good option but you need to make sure the prices and the landlord is reasonable, I personally want to buy myself a detached house so can have a kind of base to return to whenever, even if I go somewhere for awhile and I'll decide what to do from there, I'll have to see what happens when I grow my Bitcoin stash Cheesy.

Housing prices in the UK in particular are fucking ridiculous, depending on where the area is you could buy an extremely good detached house for less than £200,000 and depending on where you go if the city is well off a frankly crappy flat would easily go past £200,000 if you bought in the centre or anywhere people would actually like to live.

Right there with you, I'm convinced that semi-detached houses are usually just normal detached houses that have been cut in half to save money and squish more people in.

Well it really depends on your way of living and ofc what you can afford.
If you buy you will probably lose money if you ever want to sell it. But if you can afford it and you are not planing on moving a lot the best option would be to buy one.
If you move a lot, or you just cant afford to buy one, then ofc you need to rent.

In the eastern and central Europe owning flats and houses is a lot more common than renting. I lived in Germany for a while and was amazed that their government allows you to rent flats indefinitely.

If you live in eastern EU you need to work for at least 20 years to afford a flat. Prices are just ridiculous compared to salaries.

I reside on the 9th floor and have a nice view of the whole city, it gets boring like everything else. Always wanted my own house, even a small one.

like said before, it depends on the housing market in your local area, and what you want to do with your life. do you want to be tied down by the house, or to rent and have options to get up and leave?

opportunity costs. if you have money laying around, then you could invest it and earn more money.. instead of dropping it on a home that could crash at any moment.
