The China Bitcoin Conspiracy, It Could Be Much Bigger Than You Know
Bitcoin is an unregulated currency not controlled by any central organization. This is a fact. It is open to manipulation to those who are easily manipulated, this is a fact. Unless, you are borrowing money to buy Bitcoin and have interest payments to make on the loan, the price volatility of Bitcoin should not affect you in anyway, because there would be no pressure to sell.
Which is why we at this magazine find it hilarious that there are so many conspiracy theories and cries of foul intentions in the community being thrown out that accuse China (the Country) of trying to manipulate the price of Bitcoin.
You have to be kidding. First, it is ironic that the community is crying about manipulation in an unregulated market. Of course it is going to be manipulated. Last time we checked humans were not honest capitalists and second if there really was manipulation it would probably be coming from CoinDesk and the The Bitcoin Foundation.
CoinDesk is by far the loudest mainstream voice for Bitcoin, evidenced by their Alexa rank as well as their RT count on twitter. Jon Matonis, the Executive Director of the foundation regularly writes for the magazine and the magazine regularly does beautiful write ups of the BTC Foundation’s paying Silver and Gold Members. The amount of web traffic that is driven to those site links are the equivalent of Gold to these companies. In a digital world SEO is king. On top of this, the CoinDesk price index is what the foundation uses to charge it’s members and is generally accepted as the price by mainstream media.
Look, let me be clear, We are not accusing those two organizations of any sort of manipulative tactics whatsoever. We are just trying to show the community how much of a Wild West that Bitcoin still is and everyone needs to take a buyer beware approach to the most popular digital currency. If they wanted to manipulate the price, the Foundation and CoinDesk could easily do it.
That being said, there is good news. newsBTC, coinreport, Money & Tech, are quickly creeping up in the rankings and provide another voice for cryptocurrencies in addition to CoinDesk. On top of this, the Foundation does provide an extremely valuable service and needs to be a part of the ecosystem. The Foundation is transparent enough and people can force a change if they cared to.
Again, let me be clear. We are just trying to make a point here. I could just as easily point to Barry Silbert, The Winklevoss twins and Chamath’s claims of how much Bitcoin they own. Has anyone audited them? Are they telling the truth? Do they own more than they claim? Are they colluding together? You see, we can go on and on, but it is all of us who need to be cautious in a world where there are no rules and regulations to protect us.
Personally, we want it to stay this way. The only change we want to see is the whining to stop.
