What if the market is not actually being controlled by people who profit on pump and dump, but people who profit on commission on transactions? Think of how much money Mt. Gox has made so far. Is it unreasonable to say that they could be causing the spikes in the market because they make commission on the high volume of trades done when there is volatility in the market?

Transactions must be included in a block to be properly completed. When you send a transaction, it is broadcast to miners. Miners can then optionally include it in their next blocks. Miners will be more inclined to include your transaction if it has a higher transaction fee.

This is not some pseudoeconomic post-modern Libertarian cult, it's an un-led, crowd-sourced mega startup organized around mutual self-interest where problems, whether of the theoretical or purely practical variety, are treated as temporary and, ultimately, solvable. Censorship of e-gold was easy. Censorship of Bitcoin will be… entertaining.

I wouldn't worry about gox right now. They have huge incentive let the market make them lots of honest money without the need to be corrupt.

Arbitrage. But, that's assuming the premise that it is being manipulated, which I don't buy.

ok, good point, I was being flip because I like volatility we do need to break the goxopoly -> intersango charges 0% fees, offers various currencies, is run by some trustworthy people and works quite good. only thing needed badly are more people to use it in order to lower the spreads. bash the goxopoly!

As strange as it sounds... Mt Gox was challenged by a very intense hack and made everyone whole in the end. So, while they may be amateur, they don't appear to be malevolent. I don't mean to say Intersango should achieve this in the same way, but accountability is #1 when it comes to exchanges. That is what needs to be "guaranteed" and advertised.
