i've been trying to buy cheap bitcoins since the god damn crash.

i set a bid order at a price far above the market price, and it doesn't get filled. just sits there.

what is going on?

Simple: too much traffic for MtGox to handle. Things are placed in a queue, and they're going through the queue trying to execute as fast as they can. (Hopefully nothing crashes on their DB!)

Maybe this has to do with the drop in price. Maybe MTGox isnt executing new buy orders only sell.

same experience for me.  Although, I got a bunch of trades in initially.

Now it's been Pending Status for about 15 min...

Hopefully, their servers just catch up and don't crash.

nope, because i keep placing and cancelling orders. none of them filled. can't swing trade on this volatility with a wait time of more than a few seconds...

its like trying to play a videogame wearing a full hazmat suit watching the monitor in the mirror after 7 beers

This is not some pseudoeconomic post-modern Libertarian cult, it's an un-led, crowd-sourced mega startup organized around mutual self-interest where problems, whether of the theoretical or purely practical variety, are treated as temporary and, ultimately, solvable.

How much money do they make in trades again?  Can any other exchanges demonstrate that they can handle 5000 people trading and looking at live data? Seriously?

People don't take their business elsewhere. Apparently Gox is the best game in town. Bitcoin is young and has a long way to go.

I am asking if someone else could demonstrate it.  As in show evidence that they can handle the users.  People will flock to them just for the live data stream that doesnt go down during ANYTHING INTERESTING, but they would have to prove it first.

My point is how can they prove it when the users don't leave the big volume exchange?

You can simulate traffic
