It may be possible in the case of Coinbase, doubt it with Bitstamp

simple  as:
-open coinbase account
-transfer from yyourwallet to your coinbase address.
sell btc.
profit?Huh

2. find your deposit address
3. deposit
4. sell bitcoins

If you were to send BTC from your desktop wallet to your coinbase address you could simply wait for enough confirmations for Coinbase to accept the deposit then sell the coins from their website.
