I hope they do it. The more companies accept bitcoin, the more stable the currency becomes, which will invite more businesses to join.  Another thing is that IMO Paypal will do anything they can to discourage Ebay from acepting BTC Why do you think that? They're essentially the same company. I think Paypal can obviously see the benefits of Bitcoin and would be wise to try work with or accommodate it in some way rather than ignore it or try squash it in someway. I think and hope it's here to stay and it's only a matter of time before the rest of the world see/realise the benefits. I think PayPal/eBay probably see this too. |

Currently ebay and paypal are taking down anything bitcoin related, now all of a sudden they welcome it with open arms?

If they integrate it into paypal I have zero interest in it. It is just another currency for them to freeze for months at a time while asking for a laundry list of documents proving we are not transsexual Satan worshiping terrorists.

I've said this before, but if Paypal were smart they'd either try buy a payment processor or create their own. I hope they do it. I'm sure users like you and I won't use it, but if Bitcoin is going to go mainstream we'll always need payment processors, but if they do start freezing funds an doing other crappy stuff that PP does it won't get very far. |

I would settle for ebay allowing me to offer (and accept) bitcoin as payment.
Paypal works well for me most of the time but I'd like options.
Paypal doesn't need to be an intermediary for bitcoin transactions unless they would be guaranteeing payment and even then as a seller I'd rather accept btc/xbt directly
(though I can see why a buyer would rather not).
I haven't used or accepted a check on ebay for years but it's still in the options list for selling, along with "other": bitcoin should be an acceptable option in "other"
I don't need Pay pal to interfere with a bitcoin transaction anymore than they would for a check payment.

Agreed. On top of the threats of frequent account freezes, they will charge very hefty fees also (both for transactions and for currency conversions). The only plus point is that the less tech savvy people will be able to buy Bitcoins easily. |

Ebay can never directly accept Bitcoin because of their buyer protections and insurance policy. They should instead allow you to buy paypal reload cards for bitcoin or something.

I'm sorry, but this is simply wrong. Bitcoin will work within paypal exactly (EXACTLY) like other currencies work. USD for example. Once USD funds are taken out of your paypal account, there is nothing paypal can do to take those funds back. PERIOD. They can reduce your balance if left on paypal, they could charge one of your credit cards, or maybe withdrawal from your checking account that you've previously authorized. If I pull CASH out of my paypal account (easy, can do it at any ATM), they can not get it back in any way that would not also be applicable to bitcoin. NOTHING CHANGES FOR PAYPAL! The only reason they have not implemented bitcoin, is because with bitcoin it is possible to circumvent paypal, and bitcoin is still relatively unheard of. Once people know about bitcoin, paypal WILL BE FORCED to implement bitcoin, for fear of losing market share. They will provide a mainstream escrow/mediation service (buyer and seller protection) that bitcoin absolutely must have. Paypal will become one of the biggest players in bitcoin, but paypal doesn't care about bitcoin. it will be done out of necessity. They won't do it before it will hurt them not to. Ebay can never directly accept Bitcoin because of their buyer protections and insurance policy. They should instead allow you to buy paypal reload cards for bitcoin or something.

...it's very simple: These companies all invested enormous capital building a legal framework that allowed them to establish their payment systems back in the 80s/90s. Paypal, for all intents and purposes is now considered 100% "legit", and the lobbying and legal fees that were spent to get to that point were extensive. They probably totally realize how innovative bitcoin is and would love to capture the bitcoin market, but...

...why should they risk mixing their existing business systems that smell like roses (due to all the $$$ they spent and spend) with a system like bitcoin that is still unproven and has an uncertain reputation? If Paypal/Amazon/WU added serious bitcoin support into their systems, they'd risk "poisoning" their existing payment infrastructure with something that might get negative attention from regulators.
