i built a plexi-glass case for 1 ant, im going to see how it goes and then add more plexi after the test, just add 3 more sides going up.. now i know airflow is a big issue and i have a great idea to solve that soon... just for now ive decided to test this idea, im planning on drilling vent holes and adding fans to the outsides of the case to add side ventilation, but for now it seems worthy...

i had the ants in the open air, and they were running about 48 degrees celcius, and in the case they are running 46, so by restricting the air flow actually makes them run cooler... i also have the heatsink upgrades comming soon, so i hope they work even cooler so i can overclock them... i am going to add a exit hose duct so i can control where the hot exhaust is going soon as well...

check it out... i wanted to design it a little better, but when working with plexi-glass you can only do certain things...

realized, i put the dimensions at 7.5 in (height) x 15in (width) i think i need to make them 8 inches in height, so i can add spacers under the ant for better airflow....

EDIT: Maybe 8.5in

Nice wind tunnel type design, I think drilling out vent holes on the side would help with temperatures, and maybe drilling some out of the top as well - hot air rises so I don't see how it would have a negative impact on temperatures.

If you use lexan it's easier to work with and drill into with hole saws for fans, no cracking.  It's more expensive than the acrylic sheets, but you'll get a better and less fragile result.  Other than that, would be interesting to see temps... maybe add an intake fan at the bottom and exhaust fan at the top.

Right now I put my antminers into a 4U rackmount case. I thought about doing a plexi-case as well but kind ruled it out.

Out of curiosity, why build the plexiglass case for the S1?

I would like to know the answer also. I have all mine on a nice restaurant storage rack, like a grill for every shelf. This has great air flow around the units and much easier way to run wire.

If you get more S1's this seems like a lot of work.  Cool

I have 2 Ants and 2 BE cubes blowing hot air towards my window and a window fan pulling the heat outside, my temps on the Ants dropped from 48 to 44 using this method.

and it actually works very great and droped the temperatures by about 2 to 4 degrees and I am improving upon the design... it only cost about $25 for the first 4 pieces of plexi, and if i start stacking them it will be cheaper... ill post more pics soon... running great @ 44-46 celcius

I was warned about heat, it will make the plexi bend... i have monitored it and seems the plexi doesnt get hot cause the constant air flow...

about adding a fan to the top and bottom, sounds good, but i think sides would be better cause the fact plexi bends under heat, and you dont want the airflow directly aimed at the plexi housing...

im using quarter inch, its about $8 a sq ft, was going to go thicker, but the price jumps up really fast on thickness....

now my next challenge is adding the air duct to control the exhuast... this is gonna be difficult so i decided on using thick poster board made out of cardboard/foam as a temporary trial with ducktape because adapting connectors poses a problem... will look funny til i come up with a permanent solution but for temp testing will work for a while..

im letting the ants run for 7 days before i make any modifications... to make sure its going to work 100%... then let it run another 7 days after modifications and so on... reason being = heat and plexi arent made to work together, but so far so good...

my main reason for this is to build a shelf above eye level on my wall so they can be above eye level and ability to exhuast the heat and control its temperature....

Don't drill any holes in it, that would defeat the wind-tunnel design. The air needs to be forced through the entire length of the heat sinks, any holes would let it escape before it had done its full cooling job. Your design has improved the cooling efficiency (ie lower temps).

Holes would degrade the efficiency, and more holes would continue to make it worse until ultimately you just remove your casing (ie "holes everywhere") and we are back where we started... with the least efficient solution (no case).

You've done it just like the pros. Eg the Spondoolies-Tech SP10 is a perfectly sealed wind-tunnel: intake at the front, exhaust out the back.

not exactly, its not done... and... why not spend extra to protect an investment?

i am adding a 110v wall plug fan as well... just havent finished, or had a whole ton of time... work is a priority... im sure ill find a good house fan at home depot or lowes....

i really would like to use a thermal generator... and was debating on how to power it... i was considerin just running off the psu, but then was thinking i could run it off a completely second set of generators... use the heat exhuast to generate electric and use the current to run a pair to send cold air into the tunnel... i may try this later, but its more electric and heat to deal with.... seriously, google "thermal generator" youtube has some interesting vidss too....

Have you seen these, you could possible run additional 12v fans off them I plan to buy a few to test it out.

one isue you are going to have with them, is you get a cool side and hot side, you have to use a heatsink on both sides, but isolate the hot side so you can cool it so it doesnt burn the module out....

i have a few of these laying around... i want to figure out how to use the plexi with these...

There is just one downside of peltiers (otherwise they'd be mounted in every single PC or server, because they're cheap themselves) - they need power to run, probably more than all the fans you have in that room combined. If you use one 70W plate for each miner it might end up being expensive to run.

I'd rather buy a powerful fan (like the ones used in air ducts) and mount it in front of the whole case, so it creates pressure inside. A fan like that can easily cool your hardware below room temperature and will conume less power than peltier.
