Transactions must be included in a block to be properly completed. When you send a transaction, it is broadcast to miners. Miners can then optionally include it in their next blocks. Miners will be more inclined to include your transaction if it has a higher transaction fee.

Because you've been so forthcoming, I don't think anyone is eager to see you punished.  It's not like you broke the Faucet, and in your own way you helped to make it more secure.  Pay back as much as feels right, but I don't think you should have to pay back more than 40 BTC.  (At least not out of guilt, but feel free to donate more to support the Faucet.)

Why do you need a poll? Can't think for yourself (or no morality)?

You should pay back the 40BTC you got by abusing good intentions of people. People donated to the faucet to help bitcoin grow by showing how it works. By your actions you counteracted that, causing people that might be interested not being able to look further into how it works.

Due to your abusing Gavin has to invest time and put up barriers to prevent your type of abuse.

So, shame on you. Pay back the 40BTC (I think everybody should send back what they got from it) and if you can spare some extra send it also that way.

40btc makes the faucet whole.

Any more is good karma imo.

He came forward and fessed up which takes more character than just running off.

Please please please please cast your vote, so i can know how much i have to repay to faucet for stealing 40 coins from it due to abusing.

I'm typically in favor of repaying the losses, then repaying double beyond that for damages.  So perhaps 80 is ok in this case since he came clean.

Would that be punitive damages you are referring to? Or is there a specific and real damage he caused and to whom?

I'm assuming he was ripping it off.  I haven't been paying much attention to know the exact situation.

If someone steals from me $20, I think $60 repayment would be fair if they were caught.

And $40 if they come to you and admit their wrongdoing before being caught?

Sure, but that does not make him a hero. He didn't have to step forward with it, just send it back to the faucet. To me it now looks like some attempt to boost his personality within the community (aka, "Hey, look me. I did a misstep, but going to fix it. Now I'm cool, right?"). My post was more to let him think of the consequences of doing such things and that he learns from it (hope that it prevents him to do it some place or to someone else again). We've seen numerous cases of people not being honest and I think that most would not think about consequences. With that post I hope more people (those who didn't step forward) will think of what they did and send the btc back to the faucet.

To me someone who has a real shame should not be bragging about it (hence the word "shame"), but should just put everything in fixing what they did.

if it was due to a dynamic i.p and ignorance then 40 should be fine.
If however there was intent to defraud I don't see why anyone would come forward.

My opinion is 40 BTC would be ok if you did the damage not intentionally. I think a compensation for intentional harm should be higher, maybe 80 BTC - 2x the number of stolen Bitcoin - to fix damage and to cause the same harm you did, to yourself (eye for an eye) Wink But I think it also depends how much money you have. Perhaps paying additional 40 BTC would be much to harsh if you are a very poor person.

I also agree with noagendamarket, if it's up to anyone, it's the owner of the faucet.
