itcoin in New Zealand is batting in the neighborhood. And the business accepting it couldn’t be more aptly named. BitMart, New Zealand’s first online store dedicated to digital currencies, aims to be a big step towards a thriving digital economy in the country.
BitMart is a mega convenience store and beyond stocking groceries, tools and everyday needs. Australia has seen the placement of new Bitcoin ATMs and businesses are opening up to accepting alternate currencies. New Zealand has shown a similar spike in interest. In April, local firm Bitto launched two one-way ATMs in Auckland which allow Bitcoin purchase with cash. A not-for-profit organization called the Bitcoin Association has been formed to foster the digital currency in the country.
The press release says that one user notes, “Good to finally see somewhere to spend my BTC (bitcoins) in New Zealand.” Another says, “It is awesome to see this starting up, will definitely be buying a thing or two!” Bitmart.co.nz accepts both Bitcoin and Dogecoin as payment. Apart from grocery and drug store items like gummy bears and jams, the store sells electronics and computer supplies, payable in Bitcoin.
“The sheer volume of orders and positive feedback received in the short time since launch genuinely blew away all my expectations.” Store founder Chris Dawson states, “The enthusiasm of the growing Bitcoin community and their eagerness to help establish a thriving digital currency economy in New Zealand really solidifies my belief that Bitcoin is here to stay.”
BitMart is based in Christchurch, New Zealand.
