hi all,

Our company ordered a Lamassu Inc Bitcoin ATM/vending machine around mid Feb this year. We have received news that the item will ship in the next 2-3 days, and arrive shortly thereafter.

The ATM/vending machine will be located in Johannesburg, South Africa, which is generally considered the financial capital of South Africa. We are in discussions with several restaurants/coffee shops and will be coming to a conclusion as to the final location once we have shown the interested parties the device.

Our twitter feed is @ZaBitcoinATM, and we would greatly appreciate a following there - come and celebrate this ostentatious event with us!

Our next installation will be in Cape Town, South Africa, in about a month from now.

As the first Bitcoin vending machine in Africa (seemingly the last continent requiring this?) we are excited beyond words!

I would GREATLY appreciate any advice on how to ensure this gets properly spread on the media. I have contacted all tech magazines in South Africa so far, and I have the twitter feed, but we are open to any and all suggestions to spread this news far and wide.

Go Bitcoin!!!

That's an interesting tidbit, considering that KnC's 7,000+ bitcoin mining mega-phram is located in a helicopter hanger owned my Facebook right next door, with other phrams in various stages of construction on the same campus.  Wink Wink <--- Twin Winks!

Hmm... great start. Now we need more Bitcoin ATMs in South America and Oceania. Bitcoin ATMs are spreading beyond the digital currency strongholds such as Canada and Singapore.  Grin

Thanks, I will check with regards to the marketing with them. I have not received anything yet.

I assume you bought an ATM/AVM from them as well?

What is the preferred term - ATM or AVM? I use ATM at the moment as it is something people are familiar with, although I prefer the term AVM for obvious reasons.

Above all I love what this is doing for decentralisation for bitcoin - the exchanges have been a big problem, a major hurdle due to distrust and also due to crackdown from governments.

What commission are you charging, if you have an AVM?

They have good customer support, setting up the backend with digital ocean was a bit tricky but they were helpful with the process.
The new ATM's have different screens apparently so curious what yours will look like.
AVM is a preferred term because of the rationale people take with the former term.
I left my unit with a group of fellow Bitcoiners as we are still locating the unit basically its hanging out in the Bitcoin store while we tinker with it but we were having a bit of a problem with getting its own place for the last month or two, was to busy to go location hunting that said now its not much longer have some contracts ready and cafes to look at or at the university but congrats to you for having the first African one.
Making the presentation package is probably the most tricky thing and locating the thing so having a good package really helps.
Not sure if you need one since you said you located it but found this today might be worth a read if your pitching to merchants. Got a few groups in this city some working on their own ATM machines and working out the tweaks some working on new payment processors and some working on developing new ecosystem tech for Bitcoin good to see people with the passion to develop it.
As we like to say were all millionaires already for starting this soon in this economy.
http://issuu.com/ybitcoin/docs/ybitcoinespring2014?e=10006647/7220153
Anyways your ATM is not on the Maplist yet but I believe you will be added sooner than later when it gets shipped out
https://lamassu.is/maps/
As for our ATM it is set at 9% fees to cover the cost of location the default when the ATM shipped was 3% the rate however depends on what exchange you choose to link it too.
Neal or Conner will send you an e-mail when your close to shipping should be about 2 months based on the site
You will also get a press package part of the documents you receive should be in the merged google doc folder
With the dimensions specs setting up the cloud server to backend connect etc.

PS: If you want a link to the google doc just PM me although Neal or Conner will send you the same link when your unit is sent out
Should be the Press Release Help & Images folder but contact kari if your an eager beaver and want to get a head start on it ^_^

The progess with ATMs is really great. A year ago I did not expect to see so many installations around the world so fast.

ATMs are the best way to reach the less-geeky part of the population.

I think that Bitcoin in places like Africa would be more successful if fiat is not involved.

Most country's currencies are not stable in Africa and holding bitcoin would be relatively safe when compared to holding the currency of an african country.

What will be the first two countries to start using bitcoin as remittances? All they need is two countries with converting to and from bitcoin and we could put up a youtube video of the world's fastest remittance.
