If they can not be unlocked, they should be able to do 90% of a 7970 with overclocking. The fan systems are quite variable looking between those cards, and the reference fan design on the 7970 is hard to beat so clocked the same the 7950 could get hot. As normal, AMD is figured out a pretty comfortable spot to place its 'neutered' version of the XX70.

apparently you can't unlock any extra shaders but flashing with a 7970 does give a small performace boost at the same clock rate

5970's that are selling for $400 just got alot less attractive now...
I want to pull the trigger on a few of these but I told myself I'd stop buying so much hardware...

For mining the best would be 1.5 GB - cheeper. Unlocking possibility is verry importand.
It`s on stock in Poland, for only 585$+shipping - wolcome in Poland ! Maybe becouse it`s OC gigabyte with 900Mhz on core.

MSRP is $450 USD. A lot of the models are overclocked from the factory with bigger coolers and around $500. As far as unlocking, AMD was adamant that it not be possible to unlock extra GPU units. People have flashed the 7970 BIOS onto 7950 and it does not unlock anything.

The current trend is to clock for max efficiency instead of max hash rate. Make up for the hash rate with moar GPUs

Is this calculation valid?
I know from reading website reviews they reported the 7950 is not built as strong as the 7970 (pcb,fan). That could be a factor in getting the same core clock.

I like what I'm seeing with those numbers. :-) If this keeps up,I'd be happier is seeing what the HD7990 could do when released.You could get a 1GHash/s card in 1 slot at last I bet.Anyways back to the HD7950,this certainly looks like a large step up from my HD6950 which was shader unlocked and overclocked heavily (885MHZ core stable,320MHZ mem clock) which gives me 400MHash/s (is that good for my card or poor?) At stock speeds with unlocked shaders the HD6950 does like 360MHash/s (I think,as the reading was taken last summer and I forget exactly what the setup was like then) for me. Is there a spec link for the HD7950 as I'd like to learn more about it? I wish I could trade up my card for a HD7950 (or HD7970 as I prefer better performance)
