I'm not sure if there's a setting, but it'd be wonderful if it'd be possible to have notifications when you are quoted (automatically). This way, if I'm having a debate with multiple people around the forum, I can at least see what they're saying back to me, and respond within a decent amount of time.

Yeah, I've thought about that before and it would be a good feature. Maybe you should suggest it for the new forum software in the sub here in meta.

Great idea. If a moderator would like to move this thread (to prevent duplicate threads), feel free to do so Thanks for the suggestion.

You can move it there yourself at the bottom left of the thread.

Thank you. I did that. (After screwing up and moving my first post). But again thanks for the information. It's rare to be part of a forum in which the user has so much permission. No wonder the moderators and administrators are so busy.

The new forum software is already planning to do quote replies by reference (post, version and line number) instead of by pasting duplicate blobs of text, so notifications upon replies is very much possible.

That's brilliant. Personally, I'd like to see the quote only show the exact previous comment rather than the entire chain, but allow it to be optional to see the entire chain.

They plan on allowing you to trim down the previous quote to whatever lines you want. Since previous quotes are by reference I assume clicking through to the post or expanding it will also be possible. It's in the design phase now.

I take it that this is for primary quotes only, rather than being included within a quote within a quote?
This is definitely a feature that would be useful to those who are interested in following up conversation without having to trawl through posts to see if anybody has responded your post.
Sometimes when you do look for replies to your own post you stumble across other interesting points, but at least with such a feature you would have the ability to snap straight to the response, or navigate through the topic as before.

Right, I was hoping for quotes within quotes to be kinda hidden away (an option to view more previous quotes in a quote-train, but not displayed by default). I'm a member of a few other forums, and having notifications at the top of the screen with who quoted you, and the topic, with a direct URL to both (the user profile, and the topic), makes it so much nicer. I can normally just center click all of the notifications to get them all up in tabs, and read the post, and decide rather or not to respond.

I think that a lot of conversations end abruptly because somebody has disappeared to do something else and has since forgotten upon returning. Sometimes the topic has moved on by then, it depends on timescales. It would be especially useful for signature campaign participants during times when they cycle between forum topics in conversations that they have gotten into haha.

Thought I'd show support for this. It would really help keep track of everything. Kind of like the YouTube system.

The signature campaign posters adding useless redundant fluff to their posts to reach their minimum word count are lowering my IQ.

I like the sound of this. What type of forums have this already? Instead of quoting people directly how about an option to just click something on or near their username so it auto types for example @hilariousandco. This would be good for times when you don't want or need to quote the whole post and it'd make things easier on mobiles. Would it also be possible to get a notification anytime someone mentions your username in a thread you haven't posted in?

Would it also be possible to get a notification anytime someone mentions your username in a thread you haven't posted in? I like the @username feature, it's something that many people have become well-acquainted with over the past few years. Should it be effective in quotes of quotes where the @username is mentioned? I guess that could be useful still. Once again it could lead to abuse from people constantly notifying you, but I think that this is unlikely to happen for general forum users, maybe more so for staff. I'm not so sure on the general mentioning of usernames though, think that is over the top. Also what if your username is something that people mention but aren't necessary referring to you like 'shitcoin' you would be getting a lot of false positive notifications. Of course people with usernames like 'and' or 'the' etc could be filtered in a stop list, but generally I think that it is a bad idea.

I'm sure you could turn the notifications on/off pretty easily. It's not an essential feature really and maybe it wouldn't work out great, but maybe some would appreciate it. I guess I just like to know if there's something that concerns me being discussed and this would obviously alert you to that.

I like the sound of this. What type of forums have this already? I believe it's a built in function of ip.board. The @username is a feature on some other types of boards, but I do agree with others that it should be togglable (able to turn it off and on).

You obviously need a very good messaging servive for this, I mean, like a dropdown-menu, or something at the sides with updates.

Right, below is a screenshot of something that already exists on another forum: Beside it is the icon for a new mail event. The notifications have a red + number depending on how many times I was quoted, same thing with the envelope beside it (when I got more messages).
