Has anyone thought about something like this? Anyone currently working on this? I am curious to hear the pieces you all might think goes into something like a decentralized OS.

Has anyone though about a decentralised burglar alarm?

People probably have thought about decentralised operating systems, but probably only people who don't know how an operating system works.

Why decentralize an OS when you can centralize it on your ultimate 1337 hardcore gaming rig?

How is it supposed to work? File system in one computer, drivers on another, network management on a 3rd machine?  Cheesy

Do you perhaps mean decentralized filesystem or sharing cpu/gpu power? yes this stuff exists. For example, HDFS.

I wonder if cloud storage/backups counts.

You cant decentralise everything. You can make it open source though.
