I'm gauging interest in a new idea, and wondering what pricepoint people would be happy putting into something like this?

The basic idea would be a router that runs a full bitcoin node (maybe even a localized electrum node). Easy to configure web interface, some usb ports if you wanted to plug in a miner, plug & play configuration.

General rundown of router hardware:
1Ghz processor
2-4gb ram
at least 60gb msata card (abitily to have sata ssd for more space)
3 GB ethernet ports
optional wifi
usb

Software:
Openwrt w/ an interface to see how your node is doing, graph / chart goodness for router stats.

Pricing:
Was thinking ~$300 for base model w/o wifi ; with a few upgrade options (4gb ram; bigger msata; internal hard drive (for storing junk / torrenting / running mesh network)

I could probably get the pricing lower, just would need to have enough interest to build out enough boards.

---

Let me know what you guys think, and any other options that you would be interested in. This is a project that I could have up and running within the next few weeks if the interest was there, and most likely have routers availiable to buy within the next month to month & 1/2.

The Bitcoin network protocol was designed to be extremely flexible. It can be used to create timed transactions, escrow transactions, multi-signature transactions, etc. The current features of the client only hint at what will be possible in the future.

Would something like this suffice? -- http://pcpartpicker.com/p/3QcUs

I went with the low-end AMD AM1 platform because it's designed for low-power, dual-core processing, which would be sufficient for handling both the blockchain operations, and routing should you want that feature. I also included an extra gigabit network card since if you're doing any sort of routing, you'll likely want full-duplex functionality. With this sort of configuration, you can have the box directly connected to the network, running openWRT, and have all network traffic pass through the second network adapter - connecting the second nic to a gigabit switch would give you however many ports you would need for your network.

Not planning on building out a computer, it'll be small (around 6x6x1 inches) ; run on very low power, and look pretty Smiley

I suggest to do the initial sync on a desktop computer to avoid the router the hard work.

When I say plug & play, the box will come preloaded with the blockchain (possibly as an option since some people might want to do this themselves)

---

Also, I already have a hardware manufacturer that would be able to build these out, and I'm most curious if people would be willing to invest in something like this? I might consider pre-orders, but would prefer to just have raw interest & just build out units.

If you quote the price in BTC people will buy it, people are able to spend "only" half a bitcoin on a bitcoin router.
Also share videos of the prototype before acepting preorders to gain trust.

You can build a router like this with an Alix board for a fraction of the price.

I have been considering this for a while. Thought about running a P2Pool node on the machine too. Could be a foundation for a plug and play mining solution.

Would be good to include wifi. It could be feasible to create a wireless a mesh network from the hardware. Users could connect and pay for bandwidth using Bitcoin.

Also, checkout - https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=621704.0

Same.  I wouldnt mind ones that are solar too.

I was thinking of running a kickstart project to do this too after I proto type one.  I think there would be genuie intrest in running a dedicated, stand alone node.

Bitcoin node should be plug & play plus some extra services in the future.

this isn't a bad idea but it wouldn't have the flexibility to use altcoins, maybe if all of it was plug and play and you could load blockchains on an sd card or something that would be awesome

I don't feel like this is hard to do or expensive
